Title: Come clean with your guilty pleasure movies...
Post by: somunny on April 13, 2007, 09:17:49 pm
One of my favorite guilty pleasure flicks was on the other night.  This got me wondering what other peoples' emabarrassing movie tastes are.

So I'll go ahead and start:

Valley Girl and (I'll probably regret releasing this information)...  Xanadu.

I'd say I've set the bar.  ;D

For me, it's almost easier to list by actor:

Nicolas Cage (Gone in 60 Seconds, The Rock, Con Air)

Van Damme (the first few)

Steven Seagal (the first few)

Julia Roberts (Pretty Woman, Steel Magnolias)

And I truly feel no guilt about it, but since most people think the movie sucked, I'll add on The Ref.

I wouldn't call Valley Girl a guilty pleasure - I actually thought it was a pretty classy film myself (and yes, you may quote me).

Ours would have to be either:

Killer Klowns from Outer Space
Slither (mine only)
Tank Girl (my wife's)

I went to see The Lake House (Keanu Reeves and ---Smurfette---) and actually liked it. I had no I dea what it was about, but my GF wanted to go see it. When I sat down I noticed I was the only guy in an otherwise completely female audience. So I was a bit afraid of the crappy chick flick comping up. The twist was a bit obvious and I had noticed it right at the beginning of the movie already, but apart from that it wasn't so bad.

I think most of my collection consists of guilty pleasures:
Xanadu, Hardware Wars, Groove Tube, The Spirit of '76, Head, and the "Breakin'" series.  All bizarrely entertaining.

I had an old friend show me the entire (?!) series of Sex & the City.  It was not as bad, annoying or obnoxious as I thought it was going to be - actually quite good.

While I admit I enjoy these movies quite a bit (hence the guilty pleasure theme), I'll also say that they can be a very good tool to use when your wife gets mad at you for bringing in another arcade machine - They are a sucker everytime for overly sappy love stories. ;) ;D

It did take forever (it was over the course of a couple of months) but it seriously didn't make me want to put a head through my wall.  Doesn't mean I'm going to be watching reruns or anything.

Ah, it makes me want to put the TV through a wall.  I have little patience for people going on and on about how bad their life is when they are wealthy, healthy, and have friends.  That seemed to be pretty much the entire premise.

As far as guilty pleasures are concerned, I'll watch almost any high school or college comedy/drama no matter how juvenile. For example, in no particular order:

Lucas, Revenge of the Nerds, Bring it on, Risky Business, Porkys, The Sure Thing, Road Trip.

The only films from that genre that I really can't stand are the American Pie series which are incredibly overrated IMHO.

See, you just described how I feel about most anything on MTV.  My niece watches Super Sweet 16 and even though I know these girls are "coached" by producers (like any reality show), it's just the most annoying thing to witness.  Great values it teaches too: whine enough and you'll get more than you'll ever deserve in life.

And just for the record, there are literally thousands of shows I'd watch before Sex and the City (including Full House).  But after a while, I was kinda curious to see where some of the characters were going.  If it's worth anything, I was deeply ashamed of myself afterwards.

Of course, because you're a man, and a man should be.  I am ashamed that I have sat down and watched a few episodes.  I did it mostly to give the wife some equal time since she'll sit and watch Raw at times with me, but still, I did it.

When it comes to kung fu guilty pleasures, it doesn't get better than
Master of the Flying Guillotine (http://www.kungfucinema.com/reviews/masteroftheflyingguillotine.htm)
I frikkin loved that movie!

Oh, and one of my biggest guilty pleasures: The Toxic Avenger
I have seen that movie quite a few times, mostly from ages 10-16. I think it might have corrupted me a little  ;) ;D >:D >:D. I finally got the wife to watch it a few months ago, she got a guilty kick out of it, though I felt ripped off because the dvd skipped right at the point when they run over the kids head. How could she fully appreciate the movie without that pivotal image? ;D

Here are my last collection of guilty pleasures:

Better off dead: It is only my favorite movie of all time without the slightest doubt. Noone else understands my obsessive fascination with it. I WANT MY TWO DOLLARS!!! ;D

The Best of Times: My wife HATED this movie. I have seen it over 100 times easy. It was always in my rainy day movie rotation as a kid...right behind Better Off Dead.

Camp Cucamonga: The only people here who will know this one is the 25-30 crowd (if you aren't in this age group and do know it, then you have some issues :laugh2:). I had this taped and watched it ALOT back in the day. I could totally watch it again and enjoy it. :dizzy:

And finally, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. My wife kept telling me how good the show was. I kept telling her how gay the show sounded. Needless to say, I own the entire series on dvd...though I am careful who I let know that little tidbit. I must say though, that the last season sucked balls, and I ended up liking the Angel series much better in the end.

Big Trouble in Little China (Have the collectors edition DVD)

Raw Deal - "You should not drink and bake." Best Arnie one liner ever.

Last Action Hero - Weird thing about this one, If I come across it when flipping channels, I HAVE to stop and watch it, no matter how far into the story it is at the time. I've seen it so many times, someone finally got me a copy on DVD as a gag. The DVD is still shrink wrapped, but my Pavlovian response to it on TV can't be shaken. :dunno

Most people really hate this movie, but I also like it and have seen it a bunch of times.   "Want to be a farmer?  Heres a few acres. (kicks guy in crotch)"
