When I started my buddies table, I decided to build one for myself. I have decided to use Mahogany on the top. I also purchased mini suited charcoal speed cloth and closed cell foam. I plan on painting scarlet and grey diamonds into the plexi and having it lit from the back. I am have markers for player locations around the table planned. This weekend, I cut out the arm rest and the middle. I felted the middle and now I'm ready to start preparing the plexi for paint. I'll explain more as time goes on, I've done to much this weekend to remember exactly what I've done and how to explain it. If you have any questions, just ask.

as usual  GREAT SKILLS ...
-
That table's looking good. I really like that felt pattern. I was checking out your website a bit ago and am seriously impressed--you have some mad skills and talent! :applaud:
Can't wait to see the progress. Keep it coming.
-
Thanks fellas! I can hardly find the time anymore, and it's killing me to see the projects just sitting there waiting.

Sacrifice your sleep. It'll kill you too, but at least you'll get your project completed and have piece of mind.
So far... Beautiful.

I thought the Varsity Club was going to do that. Classes have started again, so I can only hope it doesn't take me too long to complete it.

How did you get the wall of the arm rest part so perfect with all those curves?

How did you get the wall of the arm rest part so perfect with all those curves?
I'd like to know too. When you get the chance could you shoot me a set of plans? I'd like to make one of these to lay on top of my pool table from time to time. ;D

Well fellas I'm sorry to say there are no plans. I'm winging the whole thing. I highly recommend www.scottkeen.com/forum (http://www.scottkeen.com/forum). It is to home poker anything as byoac is to home arcade machines. Anyways, I used a plunge router, (I can't speak highly enough of the $40 Harbor Freight special). I have an attachment that I bought at a wood store to made large radii. I used the same center holes to make all the cuts on each end. I also made a unique jig to cut the dealer area. Also, if you look at the other poker table thread, you can see how I did that. I would be more than happy to describe anything else you guys want to know.
One thing I'm really looking forward to is the following. I bought an unfinished board of mahogany today at WoodCrafters. I plan on using the board to make the skirt that goes around the table. I plan to fully document the process as it has been one of the most puzzling things I've been trying to figure out in this process.
-
I'm assuming no cameras on this one? Good luck with the mahogany sides.

Nope, no cameras on this one. I hope that the sides come out okay. I could totally see how this could go south in a heartbeat.
-
I just placed my online order for 8" mahogany pedestals and 6 mahogany legs. These little beauties cost more than the entire rest of the project. :banghead:

Mccoy...Could you please post a link to where you purchased these items you speak of? Hopefully you won't have to kill me if you do.
Oh, that is an UNBELIEVABLE dining room table BTW! WOW! :D
-
Well, I'm happy to announce that I'm still alive. I've been working over 80 hours a week with my pool business and I honestly have had time to do nothing. Since I have had some success with poker over the past few months, I treated myself to a 650 chip set of Paulson's Tophat and Cane clay chips. With the price tag around the $800 range, I hope they are worth the hype. I bought them online on Friday, and will post picks when they arive.
Well, I have a couple days off coming up, and I've decided to get a few more details done on the poker tables. Here is how I'm going to use the plexiglass that goes around the racetrack part of the table. I'm glad I used a sample piece, as it has shown me some things I will need to address on the real pieces.
1. I drew up the borders and the triangles first. I then used a hobby knife to cut out the red triangles.

2. Here is the red layer painted from the backside.
3. Here is the grey area prepped for paint.

4. Here is the grey area painted on the back.
5. Here is the black layer painted on the back.
6. Here is the final product. When I get the rest finished, I'll show the plexi placed on the table. I think it matches the center felt very well. Note: I didn't let the paint set up, so you can see the blemishes of removing the paper before the paint dried. That error will not be repeated. I was more worried about the overall project and knew that there would be temporary problems.

I received the new poker chips today! :applaud: If you know nothing of poker, then these will mean nothing to you. If you're a player, then this will be of interest. I'm very happy with the quality of the chips. I ordered 650 and I believe I'm going to order 100 more. Here are some various pics of the chips. As you can tell, I'm very excited about this.
Chips: Paulson Tophat and Cane collection.
Purchased from: Apache chips

Holy ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- dude. You win the lottery or sumthin'?!!? Is it really that cheap to live in Ohio??
-
I didn't hit the lottery, but I did work 90+ hours for a month straight. So I bought myself somethin' nice. We're having a big game Friday if you want to play.
-
damn nice chips mccoy!! thats awesome! i need to get around to building myself a good table.

McCoy,
Wow i am impressed! Im in the Columbus area and am a huge Buckeye fan and wanted to do a table with the OSU colors but couldn't make up my mind. Yours is awesome!
I have the Pharoah's chips that were group bought about 2 years ago. I love them alot and get several compliments however I dont use them enough. I dont run a regular game/tournament as I host one during huge UFC boxing PPV's.
If you need an additional player, I would be willing to contribute to the prize pool!!!!
Thanks for posting the table and chips. They look very good!
Steve

Swolgam, you have PM.
Well, last night and today I finished padding the hand rail. It's not perfect and quite frankly, I think I kept the stapling industry in business for another quarter. I hope to never have to do that again. Getting that stuff to stretch was a ---smurfette---! :soapbox: But, it is what it is. I know it has some ruffles. I'm telling you right now, it's no easy task. The bed felt was cake compared to that horror. Anyways, I mocked up the table for poops and giggles so the plexiglass idea could be understood more. Also, I'm especially proud of the mahogany skirt. It fits perfect! It is crooked in the pics, but it's just sitting on there free ballin'.
I'm so close, yet so far away it's driving me crazy. NOTE: For other members. If I can offer any advice at all, it is this: I have unplugged my mame cabinet and made it very difficult to start up, thus preventing me from distraction.
Here is the table just sitting on another table loosely. I've taken some various pictures for you to check out. I didn't document how i padded the rail, as it would make baby jesus cry.

Wow. that's. nice. :notworthy:
-
I sympathize on stretching the rail. I've done 2 myself and have a third coming up shortly. One of our league tables took a slide out of a members truck at an intersection last weekend and the vinyl is supposedly torn to ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---. I haven't seen it yet so don't know the damage.
I'm guessing since you're on scottkeen that you used the awesome tutorial for stretching/stapling that's over there. That helped me tremendously.
That rail looks fabulous!

Today I ordered the lighting parts for where the players will sit. The idea is to cut 1" x 1.25" pieces, put them behind the player spots (1" cut in half clear solid plexi tubing), and wire them in series. From what the guy at the company tells me, this will be possible. It sounds like it puts out just the right amount of light so that players won't be blinded when looking, they'll just get the bling factor.

EL lighting is about as bright as a glowstick so they wont blind anyone

mccoy , dont know if you noticed in the other thread as it was an edit by me, but the swatch will come with frost samples, these could be used to decrease the light level if its too much
-
Are the photos deceiving or are you bending the plexi there?
-
there is a bend there. Plexi is easy to bend just apply a little heat.
TTFN
-
How did you make the rail seamless? Is there a tutorial on that somewhere? A link or an explanation would be great. Thanks.
-
I didn't need to apply heat in this application. When I made my overlay for my monitor on my arcade cabinet, I had to bend the plexi all the way across in two places, as one piece covered the main monitor, the betabrite, the secondary monitor, and the marquee. That was fun.
-
I used on big piece of the material. I did the outsides first, then the insides. It took forever. www.scottkeen.com/forum (http://www.scottkeen.com/forum) is the place to go to learn about anything poker table related. Ninja Episode may also know the exact link to the tutorial. I covered pool tables for about five years, so that's how I figured it out.

As McCoy said, ScottKeen.com is the place to be. Regarding the rail, Zerolux's Tutorial over there is the best damn way to cover a rail that I've found. I've now done 4 tables with this method of stretching the rail and all of them have come out great.

I received the EL lighting today. I didn't have a chance to mess with it yet, but it looks cool.
-
Im loving the poker table it has really got me excited about making my own. Cant wait for some updates on this project.
-
They're coming.
-
Great news buddy cant wait to see the results
-
Okay, I was able to get the EL paper lit this week. I don't have my camera on me, but I'll post pics as soon as I do.
-
Here are some pics with one of the player markers lit up. I really like the results. As soon as the video is done uploading to youtube, I'll throw it on here also.

Here's the youtube video. :applaud:

nice, looks very bright, looking forward to seeing them in situ
-
Man, that EL paper looks very cool.
In the video you mention you'll get shocked if you touch it. What voltage does it run on? Did you get the transformer from the EL paper supplier? What options do you have regarding custom shapes and/or configurations.
Nice bling factor.

Nice bling factor.
It runs on 110, it converts it to DC then back to AC and goes through somewhere over 200. It's not a bad shock as there's not much power, but it's about as comfortable as sticking a 9v on your tongue. The transformer did come with the paper. You can literally make whatever shape, size, or configuration that you can imagine. I googled luminescent paper tonight and there are tons of companies out there selling all types of shapes and sizes.
-
Major progress done over the past week. The table is at 90%. I am finishing the build tonight, sanding and staining the next few days, then...................it's game time. Sorry for the lack of pics lately, but I was too motivated to get it done.
-
Some pictures of the table 90% done. I installed the drawer tonight. I need to finish the skirting above it tomorrow, then I can break it all down and start the sanding. Sorry for the lack of tutorials, but I had to go with it. I was zoning.

simply awesome.

Hey, I happened upon a picture of mcCoy...
Well I figure it must be at least with the quality of this build. ;)
-
dang man this is just nuts.. I hadnt seen the luminescent paper stuff anywhere thats a very nice touch.
Neil
-
Looks amazing McCoy. One suggestion. The one complaint I hear constantly at our poker tournaments is from those folks sitting at a poker table with no cup holders. Pain in the ass when you've got no place to put your drink.
:dunno
-
Thanks fellas! Hey Ninja, I was considering making some inserts that came out from underneath, but I think I have another solution that I like. I may buy some cheap stools, drill a couple of holes, put the metal inserts in and put that black lining on top to match the table. That way they could be completely out of the way. I figured if I made a few of those, then they could be moved around as needed and provide that much more elbow space at the table. I have the metal cup inserts, I'm just trying to plan properly. Another idea I had in conjunction with the stools is to put up one of those wall shelves, kind of like wainscoating to run along the back wall of the poker room to give that side of the table a place to sit their drinks and stuff.
-
Well, I applied the linseed oil today and it looks awesome. I'm going to be putting on the first coat of polyurethane tonight. I should be just about done on Sunday.
-
personally if id built this table i would want drinks as far away as possible.its too nice to risk a beer spill
-
First coat is on. Tomorrow I sand, 2nd coat, and if I'm lucky, I'll put the 3rd coat on tomorrow evening.
-
Okay, table is home! I ended up putting 3 coats on everything and 5 on the racetrack. I still have to secure the plexiglass under the armrest and run the lighting, but that's easy stuff. I have decided to change the drawer just a little, as a made a rookie mistake. I hope to get pics posted soon and I can't stress enough how bad I feel that I didn't take pics along the way for that last part. I've always tried to do very detailed pictorials, and it saddens me that I didn't this time. Thanks again everyone and Merry Xmas!
-
Okay, here are the pics. I still have some final touchups to complete, but it's most certainly presentable in its current state.

Awesome craftsmanship mate. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v325/Francoberasi/Smileys/bow.gif) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v325/Francoberasi/Smileys/bow.gif)
Were having a poker game tonight round an old kitchen table, aint going to be nothing compared to playing on that thing!
-
Okay Franco, I'll trade some woodworking skills for some metal skills. We could make a kickass table!
-
Wow is an understatement.
This is just awesome. Bravo! :applaud:
-

Deal mate, I would swap for your woodworking skills any day of the week!
Did you sell those button bezels on in the end btw? If you want some to fit your leafs give me a shout.

I haven't sold them yet, as I may just keep them for future panels, but I am very interested in leaf bezels. I just haven't taken the time to google that diameter. Heck, it's a very minor amount.

Here is a somewhat bad tutorial on how I lighted the rail. It should be somewhat obvious as to what is going on. If you have any questions, please ask.
Here is what the internals looked like before wiring. I had to a) fix the gap between the plexi and the racetrack, and b) attach the 1" half circles to the plexi sections.

I used these two things to join/melt the plexis together. Wonderful, wonderful stuff for plexiglass applications.

Here is that EL paper again. I went through the testing stages again and then went around and cut pieces for each section.

I then went around the entire table and ran wiring and soldered them all to alligator clips. I then attached everything, tested it, then put it all back together again.

Have a great New Years fellas!

That is total pimp dude, i like it.
-
McCoy, this is one of my top five favorite projects on here. Really amazing craftsmanship, congratulations!
-
Thanks fellas! I love making these tables when I have the time. I'm working on the table with cameras right now, and I hope to have a set of templates made up to make these tables over and over again. I think I could sell this particular style fairly easy to the rich boys in Muirfield.

I think I could sell this particular style fairly easy to the rich boys in Muirfield.
...or to the rest of the country for that matter, not to mention poker stores popping up all over that need tables.
You could start a line called "The Real Mccoy"TM Nice work dude!

Sounds good. Watch the cheap "night vision" cameras with the IR LED's because the colours are all washed out on them in daylight since they have no IR filter on them. You will probarbly need to get board cameras so you can adjust the focus appropriately - the bullet cameras have them pre-set and you have to pull them right to bits to adjust the focus. Could always just use a handful of USB webcams as well, but that wont give you direct output to a TV.
Wonder how hard it would be to get a PC to recognize the cards from captures and calculate the odd's for the spectators like they do on TV.
I had an idea of seeing if you could RFID tag playing cards - I think it would have to be done at the laminating stage and I dont know if they would even work after that, and the flexing might be a problem too..

Great looking project. I've been watching the whole time and the finish is great, the transition from raw wood to finished really shows the beauty of the wood. I'm sure you'll enjoy many games at that great looking table, and now with the lights you can leave the room lit dimly for comfort and still see the cards. (and make people say "wow look at those cool lights")
On the camera model, if you use webcams you could use a software system like jaxcam (I think that's what it's called) to view all the video feeds at once. Viewing 10 cameras on a TV would take much more complex and expensive hardware.

4 way quad splitters are peanuts on ebay or chinavasion etc, that could feed 2 TV outputs so if you had a tv with picture and picutre you could see them all.
Depends if your going windowed table or the ones on the side which the player has to lift the side for the camera to see. If the latter then its not much use as the cards are not visable all the time. If you could process the image and freeze on the cards automatically or something then it would be good, but just watching the feeds really needs the windows in the table, and thats always not quite felt right to me (not that I have played with it at all)
Also, whos going to be watching the video feed is something else. It would be cool to have them but if you are playing with a room of drunkards next door they will get loud and give away whats going on ;)

Beautiful build ... well done buddy. :applaud:

Great news! I remade the center and put the red felt on it tonight. It came out very good. Since I have to get up for work in about 2.5 hours, I'll post pics later on tonight.
EDIT: Thanks guys for the great comments! I've been so busy lately that I've been lame on the replying, but I do appreciate everything!

This is absolutely one of the most impressive threads I've seen. WOW.
Amazing, amazing work.
From one poker player to another, I really admire the woodworking skills of you have there.
Now add a hidden shelf with a laptop that comes out with wireless internet access for playing online when your poker buddies are away. :D
Fantastic work, man.

Okay, I fixed the "v" gap issue I had by making a new middle section. I added an 1/8" hardboard around the edge then addd a 3/16" piece of wood to make the fit very tight. I went with a red minisuited poker cloth this time and I love it. The foam this time is much stiffer than the last stuff I used, but I still like it a lot.

First of all great looking table. I love the look of it. A couple of questions though, how did you bend the wood for the skirt and the drawer? I'm guessing a steam box, but was just wondering. I've been wanting to do something like this for a while now, just havn't figured out the easiest way to. Also what did you do to attach the padded rail to the plexi? Again great skills and a job very well done!

Thank you for the compliments! I actually cut the strips to width, planed them down, and then soaked them in a tub of water. I had to make them pretty thin. They were 3/16" thick and I cut a 1/32" dado into it to line up with the table top. Hope that helps!

:notworthy: That new cloth looks so much better mccoy. Are you going to get back to your jukebox now? hint, hint

Thanks Kaytrim!

I put nuts in the top rail and bolted it to the table from the bottom.
www.scottkeen.com/forum (http://www.scottkeen.com/forum) is the place to go for all table questions. It is the most comprehensive place I have seen in regards to do it yourself.
EDIT: DON'T MIND THE PICS.
