Title: Still in the box??
Post by: ElKootcho on March 18, 2007, 09:56:19 pm
As I was cleaning up in the garage, making space, getting ready to begin work on my first full sized MAME cabinet, I came across a tool, bought a few years ago, that's still in the box. This got me to wondering: what big tool have you purchased that's still packed away in the box? Perhaps a deal too good to pass up or intended for a project that never got off the ground.

Mine: About 3 years ago I came across a Craftsman Industrial Planer/Molder that retailed for $750. It was on clearance for less than $150. Couldn't past that up now could I? It's still in the shrinkedwrapped box just waiting for the proper project. I've actually thought about selling on ebay but the sucker weighs like 120 lbs.

What unused treasures do you guys have in your garages/workshops? (the more expensive and unused, the better!!)

I have a porter cable 690 router I picked up at lowe's for $70 on clearance still in the box. Normally found for $139. I do that a lot too, but my tools end up opened because I like to play with them a bit and get to know them. ;D

I've gotten a lot of tools for wayyyy below retail. I love amazon.com.

I should have checked Amazon first for all my purchases. But I wanted some hands on to see how I'd like the feel of various tools.

I don't really have any tools still in the box, but I have a box that I bought with my tablesaw a few years ago that has many accessories. Looking at it this weekend, I saw that it has a router hookup and I can turn my tablesaw into a router bench. :)

Most of my power tools are still in the box just because that's where I store them.  I don't have any that I haven't used as I have always bought them for a specific purpose rather than opportunism (though that is changing now via the Price thread).

I try not to fall victim to "tools still in the box" because I simply can't afford it. I guess the closest "tool" would be Visual Studio 6.0. Not sure where it is now after the move.  :dunno

My father, however, was a different story. After his death, I discovered that what he was using for a drill press table for the past 30 years was actually an unopened (until I opened it) box for a wood burning stove. My mother has a Husqvarna chainsaw in the same condition that we found propping up a saw dust catch box under his joiner. I estimate about 30 or so table saw blades of various types hidden around the shop. And something that looks like a Stickler (http://www.thestickler.com/), but silver, amongst a bunch of glass jars.

I'm sure I'll find more interesting things this summer.

Ebay can even more so cheaper. Of course, riskier. And you're just like me cause I tend to molest my new tools once I get them even if I don't use them on a project.

My dad bought a router years ago from Sears and it still hasn't been used.  I plan on rectifying the situation very soon.
