You can with a standard PC power supply. Not sure how big of power supply it all depends on how big the amp is.

Has anyone tried this before?

Automotive amplifiers are all designed for operation on 13.8 volts, but most people just call it 12 volts DC.

There are tons of good power supplies out there that can run these amplifiers. Naturally higher wattage amplifiers need a bigger power supply to run it.

Visit www.mcminone.com (MCM Electronics) and take your pick of any of these fine power supplies:

# 72-8140 (3 amp current rating)
# 72-8141 (6 amp current rating)
# 72-8142 (10 amp current rating)
# 72-8143 (15 amp current rating)
# 72-8144 (20 amp current rating)

Pyramid power supplies are made for this very use. I have two (a 25 amp and a 10 amp @13.8VDC) and find them to be well made. Look around the net and you'll find great deals.

WOW Thoose took me back to the days of CB Radio, i used to have a 15amp one running my CB. It used to be quite noisey if i remeber correctly, quite a noticable hum from the power supply itself.

These are much more modern power supply designs and run quietly.

Most Radioshack stores also have  them in stock, just in case you're like me and need immediate gratification.
