I've asked a couple of people and I got mixed answers.
This is what I want to do:
I have a Standard Resolution 36" Arcade Monitor. It's currently displaying the Sega Dreamcast in 15khz standard resolution. Looks real nice but the games I want to play on it should be running in VGA mode. So, when I look at the monitor I want it to look like VGA.
Someone suggested the XRGB, can anyone confirm that it would work?
Is there a device I can use to make my Standard Resolution monitor output VGA, and look like VGA with little or no signal degradation.

Because a monitor doesn't "output" anything. ;D
Seriously though.... if you have a standard resolution monitor, then it will only accept a standard resolution "input". (CGA)
You would have to adjust, either by hardware or software, whatever it is you want to display on the monitor down to 15khz. (standard resolution)
What monitor are you using?

I think it's a WG, it does CGA and EGA. What if I put a VGA chassis in there?

It would more than likely instanly cook your VGA chassis unless you have the matching yoke to go with it.

I I understand your question right, you want to run VGA games (640X480 @ 31khz). If so I may have the solution??
Just brought in a couple of converters that may do the Job, but it would mean that you have to manualy change your signal connections each time.
Have not yet completed the testing.
Too bad you don't have our tri-mode 39"

Yes, I want to run VGA games at 640x480 at 31khz. But when I look at the monitor I want it to LOOK like VGA, not CGA. What do these converters do/look like. Manually change the signal everytime I turn the monitor on or every time I want to go from CGA to VGA? I don't need CGA for this monitor.
I would kill for your tri-mode 39" I probably can't afford it for this project.

If you want a monitor that looks like a VGA monitor, you need to get a VGA monitor. Upscalers and downscalers are nice and all but you won't magically double the scan range of a std res monitor with a converter. 15KHz won't look like 31KHz.
If you need a cheaper monitor, look for the Gateways or similar large CRTs that support VGA or SVGA.

Agreed..... any kind of "converter" is going to do just that.... convert the VGA signal "down" to the CGA signal.
So all in all what you will have on screen is a CGA resolution.

this may be the wrong place to post this.... but how did you connect your dreamcast to arcade monitor... i know i have to use a hacked vga box. which i have. although from then on.... i am really not sure from the vga cable to my monitor what to do... if you could post at this link to my thread i would appreciate it. thanks

dl-36 it is a gateway 36" vga max res of 600X800 or a $200.00+ conversion kit is the only thing I could suggest.
