I knew of, and played, Major Havoc back in the day but it was never a real fav. However, it's been in heavy MAME rotation lately.
Yours?

I also recently discovered Major Havoc. It is my favorite spinner game by far, and one of my fav's overall too. I don't see the big deal with Tempest.

Now why would you be into those? Well I guess they are ok. :dunno
Major Havok, I think i played that once... Sherdian, dude, TEMPEST is one wit da spinners bro, or close to it. I lost my tempest though, hmm. Hopefully I find it SOON!!

I played around with my new spinner on Christmas. Tempest was kind of fun, but it just didn't "do it" for me. Major Havoc however, had neat music, great graphics - especially during the 3d space fight, and overall just seemed to have personality. Since I was an early 90's arcade goer, I never even played a spinner game in the arcade. Well, I guess I did play a tron at the skating rink but that is not a true spinner game IMO.

I sometimes play a game called Starforce, it's kinda like 1942 but with more action.
Anyone who tries it out post back here, it can get pretty fun for an older game if you like that style of game. It's hard too.

astroids ;D

Major Havoc is a great game that is overlooked way too often. I would pay a high price for a nice working Major Havoc...

Ultima Underworld.

Ultima Underworld.
Sorry for the off-topic, but this reminded me of a gaming story from my childhood.
I've previously talked about the Nintendo master that my sister was friends with back then. Well, we were staying the night at her house one night. It was about 1 am and everyone else was outside at the campfire. I decided to play Ultima. I was wondering around the edge of a town and came upon some villager that really seemed out of place. I talked to him and he said "What are you doing up this late playing a game! You should be in bed!" Holy ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---! I freaked royally, turned off the game and ran outside to where everyone else was. I never played Ultima again. I bet lots of people got a kick out of that aprt of the game back in the day.

Aww man... those games are awesome! If you haven't played them much or couldn't afford to play them when you were younger check'em out now. They have good replay value and require some skill to play.

Eagle. Hadn't played in 20+ years. The audio is what really brought back the memories.

I dont know if you are including consoles too but I have been hammering Another World (through DGEN) on my PSP this week.
Damn has that game brought back some memories! :'( :)

Mario 64. I played it emulated on the computer a long time ago (1999 I think), but never made it very far since I was playing it from the keyboard, not a gamepad, I think I got around 20-25 stars. I knew it was a great game, so I picked it up for the Nintendo DS (a year ago?) but I still didn't like the controls on the DS for the game and barely played it at all. I just bought it on the Wii for the virtual console a few weeks ago, picked up the classic controller and have been having a blast. Its amazing how well the game holds up after all these years. Right now I'm 35 stars in and have just beat bowser the second time, which is further then I've ever gotten in the game.

To finish that you probably need the real console. That game makes HEAVY use of the analog stick and the exact N64 controller layout towards the end. It will be damn near impossible to do with any other controller.

The Wii classic controller does have an analog stick...two actually. I can easily reach all the buttons and don't see myself having a problem with the controls.

I'm having trouble calling N64 games classic at this point still. Though, aside from about 20-30 gems I would say by and large it felt like a learning exercise for Nintendo learning to handle 3d graphics because a lot of the games had poor camera handling, bad game play and just felt lacking. Airboarders, Cruisin series, Aidyn Cronicles, Quest 64, so many horrible games.
I'll agree that there are lots of good looking games though, and I personally feel like you can render them to an exceptional quality using P64 - Mario 64, Starfox 64, Blitz, BattleTanks, Zelda:OOC. All worth looking into.

I know that, but I guess you'll have to actually get to those points before you understand. The entire console was designed specifically around that game...

He's meaning how easily/quickly you can access the various buttons while using the stick obviously. I wouldn't know, I don't have a Wii.

I guess it could be considered a modern classic. :)

Fair enough. I still can't see how the n64 controller would control better, but I guess I'll just have to wait and see. I now have 46 stars and am getting close to fighting bowser a third time, so far no control issues. I just picked up WarioWare for the Wii, so it may be a while before I get back to Mario 64 though

Simple. It's because they were first.

I understand that, but in this case that isn't really my issue.
For example, when Nintendo started doing new techniques with the SNES like multi-layered backgrounds and foregrounds like in Super Mario World and scaling effects like in F-Zero, they looked awesome - but they also played very well IMO.
Then the N64 comes out and tries to enter the 3d market, and oddly enough - most of its opening games looked and played swell, the problem was latter on, lots of 3d party companies started churning out junk for the system, though Nintendo themselves probably turned out a few stinkers of there own. But even though they themselves were not the developers, it still reflects poorly on them.
Maybe I can just ignore the SNES's flaws because I just happened to always luck out and buy good games for it. I know it had bad games too, but nothing compared to the heaps of flotsam the N64 carried.

Just thought I'd mention that this thread isn't about which games are considered classics, but which games you recently "rediscovered".

Thats fair, didn't think about that.
Lets see...
Uplink (hacking simulator game), Rampart, Defender, Rolling Thunder, Hitman, Grim Fandango.
I would call any of those solid gold, especially Grim Fandango & Uplink.

Montezuma's Revenge (atari 5200), which is identical to the dos version of mid 80's (or rather the dos version is identical to the atari 5200 version).
