Hey all!
I remember a game from my very young days, but I remember very
little.
It was seen from the side, with a castle with a drawbridge that would go up
and down from time to time. I remember something with arrows and maybe
even boiling oil. I think you had to defend OR attack the castle. Sometimes
a bonus would appear, and you would have to lower the drawbridge to
get it in...etc.
It might not even have been arcade, but maybe computer or even handheld game. We're talking maybe 1984-1985 here
:)

Ermmm Possibly "Hunchback" ?? Did you also have to swing on bell ropes?? and swing on ropes over fire pits and duck under and jump over arrows as they came towards you..... On some screens you also had guards with pointy sticks that you had to jump over without getting spiked.
If it is that one then it was an arcade and a home computer game.
I think it went under a couple of other names as well as "HunchBack"
Best Regards,

You might be thinking of a stage in the game Crossbow (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=C&game_id=7444). This game uses a gun (crossbow) to move a set of cross hairs around the screen shooting on various dangers of the travelers you are guarding. You keep playing as long as you can get at least on of the travelers across the screen safely. You also gain additional travelers along the way as well.
From KLOV:
The stages are a desert, a ghost town, ice caves, a volcano, a bridge, a jungle and last but not least a castle... On some stages, a path may be blocked; like at the volcano, it will be blocked by a lava flow, so you will have to shoot the rock in order for your friends to cross over. Also, in the ice caves, you must shoot two big ice pikes into the two big crevasses in the path, so your friends can cross. When you get to the castle, you must shoot the chains to lower the drawbridge, so your friends can get inside.

That was my first thought too.

Great thanks for all your help, but nope...none of them :)
Maybe it WAS a handheld game...those were VERY popular at the time.

Was it a Trojan Horse LCD game?

That is the one where you have to defend the castle by lowering the drawbridge for your guys, but raising it for so the enemy can't get in, and you have to use a spear at the top to stop the enemy from coming over the top.
It's been a long time since I played this game, but from your description, that may be a fit.

Now I have blurred memories of an old game with a castle and a drawbridge stuck in my head.
Did it have blocky graphics, like an Atari game?
Similar to Adventure, but you can see the inside and it had a drawbridge.
It might be one of the Ultima's or Kings Quest's, but I'm not sure.

Dark Castle comes to mind. I played it on an old MAC about that time.

rampart is completely different.

I haven't played it in a long long time but to me it sounds a little like Lands of Lore.
