I've been looking for an inexpensive way to provide USB ports on the outside of my cab - primarily for the light guns. One option would be to use a data wall plate, but I was hoping for something smaller. I found this, but it's friggen expensive (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000AA49DO) - $18.50 + $7 shipping!
-
Same thing (http://www.frontx.com/store/order_p.html), cheaper and more versatile.

Just get a cheep USB hub and mount it in your CP. A little gorilla glue or small angle brackets and you are good to go. Check out my CP here (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=59920.msg591850#msg591850), sixth pic for the angle bracket mount. Here is a larger pic to look at. I used these in black:

They are simple to mount, and you only need a standard USB A-B cable to run to your computer or USB hub. I have them on the front part of the CP for dual gamepad games (mostly console emulation). They work great!

For anyone who has considered adding handy usb ports but has not or is on the fence, do it. There are so many times that I wished I had done it originally in my machine. I finally added a usb extension so I could at least have easy access to it right on top of my panel. Beats opening the back every time I need to add or move something via thumb drive. I like the products in the links and will definitely use one next time.

For whatever reason I get a 'cookie error' when I click that link, but that's definitely the way I'd go. That Neutrik panel mount is not only better looking, but it's under $5!

I knew you guys would come through! The product from Neutrik is exactly what I was looking for (and a cheaper solution than the one I found). Thanks to everyone for the help!
-
Does anyone know somewhere in Australia that stocks this type of thing? I've been wondering what to do in this regard for a while.
**EDIT**
Heh, Should have done more research before I posted, this place looks pretty promising.

By the way, Neutrik (http://www.neutrik.com/content/products/detail.aspx?id=210_1953788625&catId=CatMSDE_misc) also offers the connector in black - and you can get a nifty rubber cover!
I ordered 4 connectors and 4 covers from www.markertek.com (http://www.markertek.com) for $20 + shipping ($5.50).

I used these cables and the black faceplate for my cab. I put the USB ports underneath the control panel so that they are unseen and easy to access.
They are extremely handy, and I also use them for my light gun as well.

Speaking of light guns, I just realized that the Act-Labs PC light guns don't use a USB connector - the guns themselves connect to the control box with a 9 pin mini din and the control box connects to the pc via USB. I did a quick search on mini din connectors and found that the standard types only go up to 8 pin. The 9 pin may have been some odd format used by Sega. No way I'm ever going to find a panel mount 9 pin mini din port ::).

Have you considered the LCD TopGun?

Too late - already purchased the Act-Labs guns.

I was thinking about how to hook my topgun up with one of these ports (usb would go into usb) but I would also need to make a port for the LED connectors!!!

Hey arzoo, where did you find the rubber covers? I looked for those too, but never found them. A link would be most appreciated.
Thx.

On the chart that was originally posted. :laugh2:

What 'chart' would that be?

It was removed by the mods. Mispasted URL that made us all point and laugh at SirPoonga.

I think there's something wrong with their website. That link is going to some Chassis Mount USB Barrel now. :-\
EDIT: Found it here: http://www.markertek.com/SearchProduct.asp?item=SCDF%2DBK&off=0&sort=prod
EDIT2: Now your original link works too LOL. WTF ???

Can't believe that got removed! I'm glad at least you saw it, Chad. There must have been 40 views after SirP posted it and you were the only person besides me who seemed to notice it.
6" around! LOL

I did find a solution for the Act-Labs light guns - 9 pin chassis mount mini din socket (http://www.minute-man.com/acatalog/Online_Catalog_Chassis_Mount_Female_Mini_Din_Socket_276.html#aEMS9)

I have 4 of the neutrik plugs from Comprehensive. $18 shipped for the 4 plugs then I got a 4 pack of black 6ft cables on the ol' ebay for $10.25 shipped so for 4 it was nearly 30, not bad at all. I'll flush them into the back of my CP and post some pics for yous guys.

Haha, ok, give it a rest.
Anyway, back to the picture I NOW have linked (stupid autofill). I just took the expension parts (ones that fit in an pci slot and plug into the motherboard headers). I used the pci metal as a template to cut my plexi.

I went with the stuff from http://www.datapro.net (http://www.datapro.net). Works great!
Here are some pics...

Anyone know how to get the aluminum mounting plate in the pic? Or does that come with the covers?
