If they didn't even read the auction, they aren't going to do anything other than click "send payment".

Once he emails them the password, he's off the hook as far as ebay is concerned.  The auction clearly states it is an email address and nothing more.

Or people bid it up to mess with him and force him to owe ebay that commission.

If they don't pay for it, he files for a refund on the auction fee from e-bay. The only thing he would be out is the listing fee. I'd say it's an acceptable risk for the chance some dumbass is just going to hit the 'Pay now' button.
