Okay, just won this (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=003&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=130036845341&rd=1&rd=1#ebayphotohosting) on ebay.
I want to be able to tell when I show up to get it if that stand is really oak or just an oak finish. How can I tell?

Look on the inside. If it looks like wood (as from a board), you've got the real thing. If it looks like particle board, then you got the laminated stuff.

Sometimes the inside will also be veneered. Check the underside of the lip of the top surface.

I'm not worried about a laminate... that I can easily detect. It's the difference between oak and pine that would be harder for me to tell. I've seen people describe pine as oak because it had "an oak colored finish" before.

Easy to tell the difference between oak and pine. The grain pattern of oak is much much tighter than pine so you'll see many more grainlines. Pine also has very wide grainlines compared to pine. That tank is for the most part oak, the side panels I'd guess are veneered.

Cool, thanks for the info. The main consideration is, of course, that a 55 gallon tank weighs over 400lb full... want to make sure that base is the real thing. Plus oak costs 3x more than pine.
