UPDATE: THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD 3 GAME IS COMPLETE!!! SCROLL DOWN FOR PICTURES!!!
---------------------------------------------------
Hello, I recently came across an old Centipede cabinet which I am converting into a house of the dead 3 machine based on an xbox. The Centipede cabinet was first converted to an Archanoid game which was working when I first got it. It was a shame to dismantle the working machine but it was the only cabinet I had my hands on other than the street fighter 2 cabinet I'm going to make into my second mame machine or perhaps a golden tee machine. Anyways I'm trying to figure out the colors of the House of the Dead 3 machine and need some feedback. :dunno
Could you guys let me know which color scheme is the best, or any ideas would be great:
http://www.marknetwork.com/cabinets
Hope to hear from you guys soon!! :)
Mark
PS - Has anyone here ever built a gun-only type of game? I only see joystick or racing related no gun games. Thanks!
-
OH MY GODDD!!
Do not make this into a HOTD3. Sweet Jesus.... :banghead:
And you are NOT the first person to make a trackball dedicated machine or a gun dedicated machine.
-
Haha why not make a house of the dead 3 machine? I have everything lined up ready to go! It's freakin sweet! Do you have links for other dedicated gun cabinets or dedicated trackball cabinets I've been looking around for ages!!!
Thanks,
Mark

:dizzy:
What is up with converting classics to play consoles ?
Before you go too far, have you figured out your video situation ? There ain't a lot of room for a reasonable size (for gun games) horizontal monitor in a Centipede cabinet.
And, yes, I have a dedicated gun cabinet, although it is JAMMA-based, not PC-based.
Cheers
-
I'm not making this into a consol game this will be completely wired up with the xbox so nothing xbox-related is found. It is going to look like and act like a complete house of the dead arcade unit. I'm looking for someone who has built a dedicated gun cabinet based on a computer or a consol, I know Jamma cabinets can be gun based :banghead:. I'm asking if anyone has built a gun-only cabinet (with pics) :).
I found the perfect size TV that will fit nicely in the cabinet and works well with the guns. It's gonna be sweet! I think it's a 23" or something like that I dont remember but it fills the entire width of the cabinet. My classic arcade games are on my mame machine with about 30,000 games on it. Why make 2 or 3 mame machines (kind of pointless) instead of something different? Now I'll have a MAME (classic arcade, and present games), a golden tee machine, and a house of the dead 3 machine. What would you suggest I make out of the cabinet?
Is anyone interested in taking a look at the colors of the machine? lol
-
i have to agree. please don't do it.
1. screen too small for a gun game.
2. screen at the wrong angle for a gun game.
3. cabinet is too well known - - it will always look like a centipede.
4. you'll never get any sort of authenticity, so why bother? your tv works BETTER.
Build a showcase cabinet specifically for it: you'll thank yourself later. I'd scratch build one for you just as an exchange for the cabinet if i was local.
-
I know Jamma cabinets can be gun based :banghead:. I'm asking if anyone has built a gun-only cabinet based on a consol or computer.
Sorry, I read "has anybody built a gun-only type of game" and thought that since my gun cabinet is gun-only that it qualified ... ::)
Cheers.
-
hehe oh i didn't know you built the jamma gun game that's awesome! id love to see some pictures!! :)

I'm planning on changing the horizontality (is that a word, ;)) of the monitor so it is straight up and down. I've played the game on a 23" tv without any problems. I have the cabinet and I'm making the machine, lol I don't want a huge machine I have 2 sitting downstairs already. Haha I'm not sure what you guys want me to do with the machine, only mame and arcade-related people know what cabinets are from what games. I'm the only one of my buddies or in my entire family who can do the same. When people see the cabinet complete when they come over they will say "awesome you have a house of the dead machine?", not "dude that's so a centipede cabinet what were you thinking?"
haha you guys are awesome I get such a kick out of everything! :D Man some of the cabinets I've seen here are amazing, others...are they cabinets? ;) Good times all around.
-
dude that's so a centipede cabinet what were you thinking?
Don't worry, jimmy_bored will be here soon to support you in your quest ... and he loves you guys ...
Easiest dedicated gun cabinet ever is to take a Die Hard duramold cabinet, put in a real coin door, then mount the guns on the CP. This idea came from a local op/hobbyist.
Here is a link to a picture of one he did and put on location (it is on the left):

Cheers

Still no responses about the colors: http://www.marknetwork.com/cabinets
Is everyone really that offended that I'm turning a centipede into a HOTD arcade? I'm doing it and that's final :hissy:. haha ;) I'm really not sure what people want me to do with the cabinet, this is much better this way. There's 2 machines downstairs, plus a slot machine, a touchscreen bartop arcade, a fully working custom jukebox, a huge wetbar, a bigscreen, couches, etc, etc I just can't fit a huge HOTD machine down there but I love house of the dead. I think this is the best option I have, I got this machine because it had the more horizontal screen available in my area.
Please oh please just help me with the colors!! lol
-
Number 2, but with white T-molding would be my suggestion.
And alot of people get all weird about changing classic cabinets into modern machines. My personal opinion is that as long as you don't do any cutting on it outside of the control panel, it could always be converted back, especially when the sideart is already gone off the one you have, so I don't see the big deal. Otherwise you'd have to go out and buy a Centepede CP, boards, wiring harness, sideart, and marquee.
-
Yeah the sideart is completely gone, the bezel is pealing and flaking, the control panel is all burnt and ripped, it would end up costing me more to make this into a Centipede instead of a HOTD. Here are some pictures of the sides. I tried using all sorts of thinners, etc to see if there was still artwork underneath but it was already removed, it was only layers of paint. I'm not cutting anything in the cabinet, I'm just painting it, cleaning up the control panel, putting a new overlay on the panel and that's it. :)
Thanks for the color suggestion!!
hey NightGod what do you think of number 9?
-
Color scheme wise I'd go with the second one also. Depending how confident you are with your painting, or if you have a friend whos a good painter, you could also have some of the red on the lower front section in a blood dripping type affect to make it seem more like a cab that was made only to play HOTD.
-
blood dripping type affect
BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!! I didnt think of dripping blood wow that's an awesome idea I'm definitely doing that!! wow thanks!!!!
-
I'm planning on changing the horizontality (is that a word, ;)) of the monitor so it is straight up and down.
I meant that the screen should be facing towards you, not up.
oh, and #7
oh, and if it was my project, i'd use a pc instead. build a keyboard into the control panel, and now you have typing of the dead too. - - or i suppose you could throw in a dreamcast in addition to the xbox, might be cheaper...
-
Yeah right now it's facing me almost 100% its just leaning back a little bit, a quick fix will take care of that. :) Have some faith it's gonna be sweet I'll post videos once its done, it won't take long.
Does anyone know how to power some 6volt little lightbulbs from an xbox or from a powerbar?
-
I don't know how I'm going to power the lights for the coin door (for effects only) and these buttons (start buttons wired into xbox). They are 6volt lights, any suggestions???

just use a computer power supply, with a few resistors its easy to get the voltage you need
-
Hello, I'm not using a computer I'm using an xbox. Any suggestions?

Hello.... he actually gave you a suggestion.
-
Oooh I see, just use the computer power supply? I have a few of those kicking around!

I'm not making this into a consol game this will be completely wired up with the xbox
LOL... :dizzy:
sorry, just thougth that was funny. As far as your gun cab, MAKE IT. Good luck!
-
It is unfortunate they don't have a smily icon that is a head hanging forward and shaking its head.
I left work early the other day to try to save a centipede cabinet that was only the frame with no artwork. And it had already been crushed.
I was going to hack it up and make into a "Wacko" machine. Much more fitting.

:End sarcastic rant
-
I've never seen a Wacko cabinet that's awesome!!! Is the game itself any good?

Look up Marknetwork... you may see his comment flying over your head.

:dunno I'm out of town right now I don't have my mame machine to check the wacko game, what's the problem?
-
Oooh I see, just use the computer power supply? I have a few of those kicking around!
You could also hit up Radio Shack or a local thrift shop and pick up a 6v wall wart and just splice the cables in.
Your pic site isn't working, so I can't comment on number 9.
And people are bitching because you are converting a classic cab into a modern game-it happens anytime someone does it around here, you'll have to ignore it and just read the advice that is helpful.
-
I didn't think of just splicing an ac adapter I'm going to have to try that thanks! Is the site working now:
http://www.marknetwork.com/cabinets/
-
I think 9 will be good if you do the dripping blood thing-maybe even paint it like number two and then "drip the blood" over the coin door.
-
Might as well shoot it with buckshot for real bullet holes and then drip blood out of that. Jeez. ;)
-
Have some faith it's gonna be sweet I'll post videos once its done, it won't take long.
Famous last words. How long do you think it will take?
(pixelhugger anyone)

If you lived near me, I would sooo trade you a generic dynamo cabinet...
-
LOL !
Do this with the cabinet.
Oh so beautiful !!!
-
Hello, I'm not using a computer I'm using an xbox. Any suggestions?
Goodwill (or local equivalent) has a huge selection of transformers for around 1$
-
Now thats what I'm talking about Buckethead!

:'(
-
Marknetwork, I hope you'll at least Ebay the glass and that marquee. Help other people restoring their Centipede.

I liked the Centipede (http://jhanson.com/arcade/centipede) project ... while I generally prefer classic Atari's be restored, a tasteful MAMEing can also be a thing of beauty.
Do you have any CP shots ?
Cheers.
-
There's always this option for a house of the dead cabinet.

Unfortunately, no CP shots. It's at my parents' house, as it belongs to my dad. The control panel has a green ball-top 4-way joystick on the left, three green & yellow buttons in the middle, and a regular Centipede trackball on the right. The artwork is a little different than what's shown on the webpage, but is similar.

SWEET BABY JESUS! I think I might just quit looking at project announcements altogether. This makes me so very sad.

I agree. This thread reminds me more of the obituaries than project announcements.

haha I don't think you really haha mean that right?
Oh, and haha. ::)
-
ugh kill a classic for that... ew....
-
this is a very sad thread...
-
Let's rename this thread : Death of the Centipede
-
I don't understand you, guys!!!
It's incredible how some people can obtained art pieces as the centipede cab and want to transform this beauty in things like a HOTD machine.
Here in Spain, is impossible to match any original cab. No pacman, no centipede, no joust....only generic cabs. No dedicated cabs in Spain.:(
Take a look to the "generic" machines from Spain:(spanish link...:P)
http://marcianitos.forumcommunity.net/?t=1064756
Sorry dude, but why you don't try to build a cab from scratch to your purpose?
-
trust me we understand
:( why ruin a classic for a ---smurfy--- shooter
-
Cab looked like it was already pretty f'd up to me, and Centipede isn't exactly rare.
No big loss to MAME/XBox this one.
-
Hi TOK.
I know that in the U.S.A. when you raise a stone appear thousand dedicated machines (Pacman's, Galaga's, Centipede's)
But in my country is rarest to find any dedicated machine.
When I see yours auctions and all the kind of dedicated machines, the envy appears on me (Good envy.....but envy).
Understands me that when I see a machine of those characteristics, turning in a MAME project (or using a X-BOX), or putting on it a "Frankelpanel", the only feel that produces to me is sad and pain.
Cheers.
-
Lord Hiryu, I sent you a PM.
-
Hiryu,
We may be in the US where these dedicated classics are easier to find, but believe me, most of us share your sentiment.
It's not necessary to "convert" classics while there are soo many empty generic cabs available and even specs for the classics if you want to re-create one from MDF.
Just my opinion on it.
-
Hello,
I have finished my centipede cabinet converted to a house of the dead 3 arcade. I've had some people over and they love it! It is a 21" tv which I didnt think would work but it works very well with the guns the size is actually perfect. The paint is finished and the blood effect worked well thanks for the suggestion!
Let me know what you think!!
edit: the white little labels say "FREE PLAY" on the coin door, and "PRESS START ON GUNS" on the control panel. The middle is the volume and bass control which lights up and works perfect since some people like tons of bass some don't. It's a creative surround sound system brand new.
-
I think the paint is cool but I also think Centipede > HOTD3
-
WOW!! (is right!)
That "bleeding" paint job is the shiznit.

HERE IS THE FINISHED GAME!!!
It took a little while to put it all together but it was well worth it. It doesn't look like a centipede cabinet anymore, and it's a hit in my basement arcade! The #1 played game out of all the arcades and slots I have. Let me know what you think, thanks for the blood effect idea it came out pretty good. I put a piece of plexiglass to cover the button and trackball holes. Glad I decided to do this, death to centipede praise to HOTD3! :D
Before and after pics:
-
-stupidity deleted-
-
Oh believe me I've already had a lot of flak from the community, haha. It was so worth it though, I had 0 interest in making this back into centipede. This is much much better!! :D
-
...I had 0 interest in making this back into centipede. This is much much better!! :D
Oh, it was converted already?
Everyone back off him. If it was dedicated already, I'd be first in line to demand his head.
So how did you do the dripping blood paint?
-
That's why I deleted my stupity. I saw elsewhere it was already hosed.
But you have to admit, "Death To Centipede" seems a little trollish no?
-
The dripping blood was just painted on with a regular paint brush then for the long drips I simply put lots of paint on a smaller brush and kept 'gobbing' paint on the same spot until it started dripping down. I was weary about it at first but it ended up working okay. I added the red while the black paint beneath it was still wet so it merged nicely together, no gobs.
It was a centipede cabinet that was converted to an arkanoid game. I received it working. House of the dead 3 was a much better choice.... ;)
-
Who wants just one old game in a cabinet when you can have 10,000+ in a master arcade machine.
Me ;D
Cheers
-
Hehe whoops I knew I shouldn't have said that once I hit post. Just a personal preference that's all, I just think if I'm making a cabinet for only one game it should be an updated game like HOTD3. I have centipede on my mame cab with trackball, etc.
It's all good you guys I still have the game! :)
-
The paint job is great. I have never seen anything like it before. Good work.
-
I like it. I was never a centipede fan anyway. Are you going to have some sideart made ?
-
But you have to admit, "Death To Centipede" seems a little trollish no?
IIRC he only changed the thread title to that after getting so much ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- from people here. It was an already hacked up cab, and he turned it into a new, complete idea with an overall theme. It's not like he took a working Centipede and covered it in marble shelf paper and an X-Arcade. IMHO people should be a little more open to ideas, and save the outrage for when people actually ruin a working, good condition classic. (I agree, that's criminal.)
The past-looking nature of the hobby can be a little stifling, a little experimentation is good for everyone. This project came out much nicer than I expected.
-
Son of a beeotch.
Real blood would have been a nice touch. About 6 quarts should do. Remember, "It's down the street, not across the tracks."
-
It doesn't look like a centipede cabinet anymore
It looks like a Centipede cabinet, That has been converted to a HOTD3.
But you did do a nice job.
I will give you that much.
As long as you are happy with it, I guess that is all that matters.
It still makes me want to cry!
Sweet baby Jesus and the Shepherds.
-
Haha other than the people on this board I don't know anyone that would know it was a Centipede cabinet. Most people that have come over think I bought an actual House of the Dead 3 arcade, they don't know the difference.
I tell them I built it and they're pretty shocked. When the bass is on full blast it just rocks the entire basement for each shot, and the recoil action of the guns is a nice touch. I think I may start making these HOTD3 machines and start selling them, they're completely legal which is pretty nice.
I'd love to get some sideart made but I don't have any HOTD3 art, the marquee was hard enough to make I only found one picture with a decent resolution. If anyone has any HOTD art please send it my way I would be eternally greatful it's hard to find.
I love all your comments though, good and bad it's all good.
-

Sorry, I wanted the HOTD2 at the last auction, but didn't have the cash in my pocket at the time, or else I would scan for you.
And, I must say that this did come out *much* better than I expected it to. As b1bug said, kudos on the craftsmanship.
Cheers.
EDIT: AUction, not Action ....
-
Real blood would have been a nice touch.
I started with my own blood but got too dizzy to keep going, it takes a lot more blood than you'd think to make a dripping blood effect. Maybe in the future anytime I have a cut I'll drip on the machine...haha...wow that was a little gross sorry about that.
-
haha I don't think you really haha mean that right?
Oh, and haha. ::)
Dude, you are a freakin' riot. :notworthy:
Haha
-
If anyone else wants to make a gun cabinet, I have a real nice Atari Maximum Force with full artwork on it that I am parting out. It'd be a perfect cabinet to make a MAME or console based light gun setup. Look in the For Sale forum for pics and info. :)
Wade
-
AWESOME CAB! I love the paint job!
-
Wade, where are you located I want I want!! :)
Thanks for liking the cab sphetr2, come over and play it anytime!
-
Wade, where are you located I want I want!! :)
Are you going to convert it to a pac-man?
-
no im going to make a game called "Reflection" wherein the player looks at the screen until he realizes it's just mirror placed in the cabinet. the person who takes the longest to notice the reflection of themselves wins.
come on man, i have some good ideas!! :laugh2: :laugh2:
-
Very nice job on the dripping blood.
-
So people don't have to keep scrolling up to see the cabinet, here it is again!! :D
-
I'm not a big centipede fan, so I think that cab is cool. Better to kill Zombies anyway!!!! I do think you should of fixed the centipede cab up to sell it, then make your own HoD3 cab.
-
Also man get some pics of you killing Zombies. Looks like a virgin there! Just sitting there by itself. I want to see you or your little kitten avatar kill some Zombies!
-
Haha will do! The next party I have I'll take pics of people playing all the games and post them, killing zombies is fun.
Man I'd hate to see what would happen if someone blew up a centipede cabinet for fun....that gives me an idea, an idea for a new youtube video...
-
Converting classics is a shame, but you have to admit it does look sweet..!
-
glad y'all like it! death to old cabinets, lets make all old cabs into new games. bwa ha ha ha :laugh2:
-
Great job. The cabinet looks great. Enjoy it, House of the Dead 3 is a great game.
So, if it is an XBOX cabinet running the XBOX version of HotD3, did you unlock House of the Dead 2??? :-) That would be awesome. HotD2 is just as kick ass as 3, some people like it better than 3!
-Charlie
-
OOOOOH YA BABY! I unlocked HOTD2 right when I got the game it's important since as you said many people like it even better than 3. I would have made a HOTD2 cabinet instead of HOTD3 but xbox comes with hotd3 automatically and it's easy for anyone to play.
Also just unlocked 'free play' for unlimited credits in the game for continues. :)
Mark
-
If you have a mod chip in that xbox you could run the game right off the hardrive :)
-
Nice Job! The blood dripping is awesome.
-Tom
-
I just got some custom decals made to say "Free Play" for the coin door, and "Press Start on Guns" for the control panel. Hopefully they will look great once they arrive. :)
-
Sweeeet! The decals arrived and finished the machine off perfectly! It's been a hit at my house, now to work on my golden tee and redesign my mame machine. wheee I love technology!! Too bad the wife doesn't like it so much... :laugh2:
-
what's next on your agenda...turning a galaga cabinet into a DDR cabinet? haha, just poking fun at you. you sure did get a lot of flak on this project, but i think you did what you had to do in this situation. very nice results, and like you said, it's a hit with all your friends and family and whatnot. great job on the paint scheme and stuff. good deal...keep us updated on your projects and such.
-
As much as i want to hate this project it came out very nice. The dripping blood over the edge of the control panel was definitely brilliant, and sells the whole machine. Great work.
I STILL say you should have mounted the guns on the side and put two keyboards on top for typing of the dead. chicks dig it, and gives another whole level to the cab. :)
-
I scratch built a classic style cab due to the lack of an original to restore. Seems sad to put a machine that killed the arcades into a classic cabinet, as well as these shooters being some of the only :censored: left in arcades.
Each to their own though ::)
