Title: Shipping a cab to Europe, anyone ever done it ?
Post by: Level42 on August 23, 2006, 02:58:50 pm
YEah, I know it sounds like I'm crazy, but in my hunt for a real Ms.Pac Man or Q*bert I've found ZERO sofar here in Europe.

ALso, IF you find them, they would probably cost a fortune. So I wonder if anyone ever dared shipping a cab over the big pond and if it went well and what it would cost (about)....

Last year, some guy named Harpal asked me to ship a bunch of cabs to him ... really ...

I never did look into it, but I would expect that you would have to get container or find someone who was moving and slip the cabinet in with their household stuff.

I know my wife's uncle wants to ship a pool table from here (Canada) to Rotterdam ... but I doubt he'll actually do anything about it.

Good luck in your search.

Cheers

Your only hope would be to find a container that isn't fully loaded and see if they will let you load that on it. How, would you find such a container? I have no idea. It would be difficult since the North America receives about 400 containers to every 1 it ships out. Like Jeffo said finding someone that is moving might be an option.

Never shipped a cab, but I can tell you that it costs about $1400 to ship a classic Mini Cooper from the UK to the US. That might give you some kind of idea of what you're looking at.

Thanks guys !

I actualy saw on the "15 plays" Computer Space thread that the e-bay offering said shipping it to Europe would be about 400 bucks. Tha'ts about 300 Euro....not too bad if I can find a very nice cab.

The alternative is building one myself from scratch. But all the original artwork and materials will probably be about as expensive of getting a good one from the States....and it will never be "real"......

if only it was the other way around, you could offset the cost with one of hollands biggest exports- ecstasy  ;)

Now, that would be illegal right ?

I knew something like this had to surface here one day, and to be honest it amazed me it wasn't any sooner :D

I know the things people hear abroad about Holland are:

1) We all live in windmills
2) We all wear wooden shoes
3) We have tulip fields all over the country
4) We have coffee shops (that sell anything but coffee)
5) We have legalised euthenasia & abortian
6) We hold our fingers in dikes when there are holes in it (I bet a lot of people in New Orleans would have loved some dikes to protect them a while ago).
7) We all have XTC factories in the back of our homes

I have to disappoint you guys.None of the above apply to me. I'm one of the boring majority. My biggest offense is speeding (but that's a national sport here).

But then, we probably hear all kinds of stuff like this about other countries as well.

Anduhmmmmm, IF I were producing that stuff, I'd have plenty of money to buy the very rare original classic arcade cabs I see here in Europe, wouldn't I ?

Hahaha, incidently, after growing plants on flats (professionaly lit and irregated, using illegal electricity taps etc.) the newest trend now is growing them in mais fields !!! I remember running through such fields as a kid and you can easily get lost.....so a great hiding place :D Regretfully for them they got discovered by a patroling helicopter and airplane....

It is all because of the strange situation here. Dutch laws devide drugs into hard- & softdrugs. With softdrugs (hasj/marihuana) it is legal to have a very small amount with you for personal use. There are legalised "Coffee Shop" who legaly sell this. BUT these shops (like any other) need to be able to get the stuff to be able to sell it, right ? So normaly (like other shops) there would be wholesalers and production companies. And that's where things start to be ILLEGAL ! So how can a system like that work. Either you legalise some production facilities and/or wholesalers, or you forbid everything....

I'm not against the softdrugs policy here, but it's strange to not legalise the complete line of production to consumer...

O, and I'm one of those boring people who never even tried to smoke.....not even cigaretes ;)

Dont let him fool you guys!

I lived on the Holland/Belgian border for more than 2 years. It is exactly like that.

Hehe.....good to see that not only Germans (like I am) are loaded with prejudices (Sauerkraut, Wurstel, Beer, etc) ;)

Concerning your problem: I once heard that a company in Hamburg "rents" container space. And as far as I hear it would be calculated the space the freight requires, not the weight. I really don't have any further information about that but I'm sure there will be something similiar in Holland.

My advice: search for shipping companies at the sea and call them to ask if they would mind to have a little corner used by your cab. I guess you won't find a cheaper way  :(

I often think "Damn, why do I live on the other side of the world" when I read about the Arcade Auctions.

Greetings from Germany

Hi Thorsten,

You are also on the ArcadeZentrum forum arent you ? I've been a lurking member there for some weeks now.....didn't yet post there though....My English is just so much better than my German ;)

Thanks for your reply ! Indeed all those things are true for Germany too aren't they ? ;)  :laugh2: :laugh2:

Actualy....come to think of it .....numbers 4 & 5 of the list ARE true :D

Good idea, and I actualy thought of that too. I have some contacts in the family in the transport business so who knows.....I will check it out.....it's just probably a bit difficult to buy  machines without actualy having seen them/played them. But that's the risk you gotta take.

Incidently, I just missed a real Galaxian that was on an advertisement site overhere by a couple of days. I check very regularly there but this was already reserved before I saw it. I even promissed to pay more than the other guy (yeah I know, dirty me !) but even that didn't help

Why is this always happening to me ?

I hope my trip to the States (and my visit to Funspot :D) will make me feel a bit better ;)

Well, our "windmills" are about 60m high but I haven't seen anyone living inside  :P

We also have coffeeshops but all you get there is .... coffee  ;D

You are right: I'm a member in both german communities.

You can write in english too. There are people from Australia and UK and they do not speak german at all ;)

Hmmm...we have a Galaxian-cab in our hall. There is no Galaxian PCB inside and I don't know if it works. It's not in a good shape but I can take some pictures if you like. I don't think we will go and rebuild this thing. We have lots of work with other cabs  ::)

Bye
Thorsten

To be fair, however, I've been to Germany and beer is a pretty big thing over there =p

Not that I consider that a negative point...
