Title: 24" TV or other to fit in new cabinet
Post by: releasedtruth on July 30, 2006, 11:13:40 pm
Question for the experts. The cabinet I'm building has a spot that's 24 7/8" wide for the TV/Monitor. I have a bead on a 24" TV that will fit, but only one model and it's a flat screen. Is it true that the flat won't look so hot? It's S-Video, but no component.  Should I be looking to get a monitor instead? I don't have unlimited fundage of course...  Advice, thoughts?

The TV I was considering is:

There's also a non-flat version of it:

I disgree with the theory that a flat screen won't look good. Here is a pic of my 27" Toshiba flat screen. It's set up vertically, the small screen you see is the laptop I was using to test the settings of the TV.

I think I found that model, 24PT6341/37   It's only 24.5" wide which should work. I'm definitely going to take a look at this one. Thanks ddw. And thanks TOK for the pic of the flat screen. I was thinking of using a GeForce 6200 with component out for the video. Anyone know if that's a good idea?

I was thinking of using a GeForce 6200 with component out for the video. Anyone know if that's a good idea?

I am running an ATI Radeon 9550 with a DVI-to-Component adapter to my JVC TV.  I have not used Nvidia cards for cabinets, but from the research I did when I was putting this setup together, I seem to remember that the DVI-to-Component adapter will not work with any Nvidia card lower than a 6600.  If you are planning to use one of these adapters, then you will have to either get an Nvidia 6600 ($60) or better, that may mean having to get a new motherboard with PCI Express x16 support, unless you can find an AGPx8 compliant 6600 card.

If you are running AGPx8 and don't want to upgrade the mobo, you can use an ATI Radeon 9550 ($50) or better (9600, 9700, 9800).

You could get some kind of VGA to Component scan converter if you don't want to use a different card.  But I remember reading that the quality of these scan converters can vary in proportion to their cost.  They run about $100 for an average one to $300 for a very nice one.

If you are going for component video inputs, it is definitely worth it.  I am very happy with my setup.  The image quality is amazing compared to S-Video.  You won't be dissapointed I am sure.

hhhmmm...I just looked at one of those on Ebay and it says:

This adapter only work with the following ATI and nVidia Video Cards.

Compatible video cards include:
ATI Radeon 8500, 8500DV, 9500, 9550, 9600, 9700 & 9800 series

NOTE: This adapter won't work on Nvidia FX line (5200, 5500, 5550, 5700, 5800, 6600, 6800, or 5900 series)

Which is different from what I remember reading several months ago...something strange is going on here... ???

Just do a search on Ebay for DVI component adapter and you will find it. It is the gold plated one.

The non-gold plated one says:

For use with the following ATI Graphic Cards:
*ALL-IN-WONDER RADEON 8500 Series
*RADEON 9500 Series
*RADEON 9600 Series
*RADEON 9700 Series
*RADEON 9800 Series

I got my adapter from Fry's but you can get one like mine (AMC brand) at Newegg.com:

I would say just go with an ATI Radeon 9550 card and the adapter from Newegg.com.  I got mine to work as have several other BYOACers.  Good luck...

That's very good to know. I almost bought this card:

http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product_Id=4103988&JRSource=googlebase.datafeed.PNY+VCG62128APB

Thinking that since it has a component breakout cable included that it would work. Definitely don't want to float the cash and then be up ish creek. You guys are on point keeping us n00bs going in the right direction.

Went by Walmart to check out that TV, not in stock. No one has it in town so I'm pretty disappointed. I want to see before I buy of course. I have 25.5" width to play with....

You could try the Insignia brand from Best Buys:

Great price for something with component inputs.  If I was building another cab with a 24" in it, I would seriously think about this one.

Unfortunately they are much too wide for my cab. Have to get it through the bedroom door and all. The Philips seems to be the only one unless I decase a TV, which I may break instantly with my luck.  Wish I could see the Philips before I buy

Check WalMart in your area.  Just got a new Sanyo 24" with both S and Composite, flat screen, for $185 and that included sales tax.  Very pleased.  :)

Now I just gotta get a TV out card for my rig!
