Ive got a 60" sony sxrd and I want to hook my dreamcast up to it using a vga adapter. Before I buy a vga adapter I just wanted to verify that this would work. I guess the dreamcast would output 640 x 480 with black bars on the sides (because my tv is widescreen) and my tv would upconvert it to 1080p right?

I believe upconverting will only happen through HDMI/DVI. If you have a 15-pin vga connector that will actually upconvert, then you're golden, but you'd have to look in the manual to verify.

Not all that many games support the VGA adapter.

There are a huge number of games that support VGA don't listen to Chad. Do a search of the console section for 'Dreamcast VGA list' and you should find a posting I made a few months ago that tell you which games do support VGA output and also how you can remaster various games to work with VGA.
If your widescreen doesn't do upscale of all signals it may support justify or stretch of the non HD signal to fill the screen just the same.

I have a fairly large collection of Dreamcast games and I only have two that are not compatible with the VGA adapter: Midway Arcade Treasures, and NFL Blitz.

You'd be surprised, but a lot of DC games look fine on a widescreen w/VGA. Some were actually made for it (like Samba De Amigo and F355 Challenge).

The game im most interested in is zero gunner 2 and I know this works with the vga cable. I just hope it looks good on the big tv.

yes, zero gunner looks good on my Samsung DLP 61...most games support VGA.
My HDTV support widescreen VGA, as well as, standard 1024x768...all the way to 640x480.
