so, I went out and bought an s-video -> SCART cable today so I could connect my computer upto my TV...but, the image is black and white!?
it works fine when running it though composite, but when I switch to s-video it goes colour-less...
i'm using a Matrox G400 Dualhead graphics card at the moment, just to test the system...it comes with a cable that plugs into the second 15pin VGA connector on the card, and has s-video and composite plugs on the other end...
the wierd thing is that the s-video cable I got only has 4 pins on the plug (which is right), but the cable that attatches to the graphics card has 6 pins...?!?
anyone got any ideas?

I think you have a cable for connection a camcorder or something.
Have you switched your TV to S-Video mode ?
My TV has 2 modes for the SVideo scart - composite / svideo - channels AV2 and AV2S
-
I guess the 6 pins VGA end and 4 for S-Video, and the other 2 for composite?
If the image is black and white, sounds almost as if one of the s-video pins isn't connected properly (chrominance or luminance, not sure). Maybe a faulty lead? I guess you have the correct AV channel or you wouldn't see anything presumably.
Sorry, not really sure :-\

I don't think your TV supports s-video, this was a problem i had with a 14" tv i had, it supported composite through the scart but no s-vid it just displayed black&white :(
I could be wrong ?

Sounds likely, quite a few TV's don't have all the pins wired up. How old is the TV?

the tv does actually support s-video, it has 2 SCART sockets and 2 s-video - but my local A/V shop didn't have any s-video -> s-video cables, so I just got s-video -> SCART as I though this would work...
I can hook up my N64 through the s-video socket and it works fine, but going from s-video to SCART just doesn't work (well, it does, but its black and white)
the graphics card is properly set up, there are options for changing the output (composite, RGB SCART, s-video etc)...
maybe I should just get hold of an s-video -> s-video cable and see what happens
-
Perhaps you have a "scart -> s-video" lead and not
"S-video -> scart" - they are different because the pins are wired to the out pins inside the scart instead of the input pins .

nope, checked that before I bought it, definatly an svideo->SCART cable (there's even an arrow on each end to indicate which way the signal is 'flowing'!)
I'll try and get hold of some other equipment that has svideo out (dvd player or something) and see what happens...
I have a feeling its my graphics card thats at fault, and not the TV/cable...but we'll see

Sounds to me like you need to go into your advanced display settings and switch from composite to s-video.
That's where I would start anyway :) .

there are 3 options in the advance setup menu:
Composite video or S-video
SCART composite
SCART RGB
the first one works, but is black and white, while the other 2 output in black and white with a messed up picture
still trying to find another bit of hardware with s-video out, so I can see whether it's the cable, or my graphics card
I'll let you know how I get on

I'm getting the feeling that S-Video isn't supported on the video card SCART connector. At least that's what those options are suggesting.
Look for documentation on the SCART pinout and see if there is a "chroma" line. If not, then no S-video.
You might have to use the 4-pin mini-DIN.

I had a similar problem once with an s-video cable that came with my dvd player. A quick probe of the pins told me that the cable was bad.. never hurts to make sure the cable isn't broke :)

** UPDATE **
ok, so i hacked an old N64 s-video cable and wired it up to an s-video socket, then attatched the cable that's causing the problems (the s-video -> SCART) and it works perfectly...
so the problems obviously not the cable...
if anyone's used this graphics card and knows of a solution i'd love to hear from you (Matrox G400 DualHead)
if not, then nevermind, i'm just using this card as a test really (it's my brothers), just checking to see what the quality is like on my TV
