I just got my wife a slow notebook for word processing and email. I wanted to put mame on it so I can use it when traveling (since the batteries actually work).
Its a 366mhz pentium 2 with 128mg ram runing 98se.
What mame version should I jump back to? .36?
Also, there used to be a program that would make new roms work in older versions. Anyone have the link?
Thanks!

Yeah, .36final will probably be fine.

I don't have the answer, but I'd like to chime in that I'm looking for similar information. So if anyone knows the answer, I'd also appreciate the knowledge.

The problem is, if you're like me, have onboard sound, using Windows (I'm on Win2K) and do not have dos drivers for your soundcard, you'll have to use an early version of the "windows console" version, or you won't have sounds.
This is why I cannot use .36 final. I tried the Windows version of 0.37b16 (when the people developping Mame decided to make the Windows console version the main development version), and it works OK on my system, fast enough for my 266 MHz. I had however to rename the file "mamew.exe" to "mame.exe" to make my front-end (MameClassic) recognize it.
