Title: Hardware-accelerated vertically mounted displays?

I've recently set up my first cab and it's going quite well. I have mame games playing quite nicely, vertically oriented on my 21" compaq p110 monitor. I'm using Portrait Displays Pivot software to orient windows vertically for non-mame use.

However, I've noticed that my on-board chipset (some crap by SIS) is no longer accelerating my 3d at all whatsoever. Posts at the software forum imply that some video cards do accelerate and rotate vertically on CRT displays, but I can't find any reference to this functionality anywhere on nvidia's or other websites I've gone to. So my questions are: what's a good, preferable not too expensive video card that will support this application? Is anyone running a similar config and have any advice for me?

I would like to have accelerated video for two purposes: video pinball and also using the 3darcade front-ends.

Post by: )p( on March 11, 2003, 11:38:17 am: my choice would be a geforce 4 ti4200... they are getting pretty cheap...and they support hardware acceleration with a rotated deskop without any performance loss...

Now we're getting to the meat of things. This is nvidia's page on the geforce 4 ti chipset: http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=geforce4ti (http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=geforce4ti). I've spent over an hour on this site and many others (such as asus and abit) who actually sell cards based on this chipset. And nowhere (!) have I found this feature advertised or explained. Am I using the wrong terminology? Is this part of the "nview display technology" but I'm the only person who doesn't know how to verify this? :-)

Importantly, the questions I'd like answered are (1) does it require an additional software purchase and (2) does it in fact work on non-lcd non-rotating crts?

Thanks for any help. Even a discussion of a first-hand experience using this chipset on a vertically mounted CRT would be most welcome.

yeah it works ok on my geforce 4 with the latest generation of nvidia drivers on my desktop pc..so yeah it will work on all monitirs...no additional software like portrait is needed...:-)

Can you confirm that you can rotate the screen in either direction? As you know, my monitor is mounted vertically, but the opposite way as yours! :-p

i gave it a go and jip rotates in every direction...

on my desktop pc that is with the geforce 4...
the 2mx in my can does not support hardare rotation of the desktop...so i hope to soon upgrade my desktop so i can put that one in my cab ;-)

jip is uhm what would it be uhm...mmm dutch for yes...sorta you probably won't even find it in a dutch dictionary...lol.. ;D

Is there a way to verify that the Geforce 3 had this ability? Again, I'm at a loss in terms of finding any documentation or explanation of these features on any of the vendors' websites! :-)
