Title: Found Space Invaders Cab - Need Advice
Post by: jsw2068 on May 14, 2006, 07:45:28 pm
I found a Space Invaders Cabinet at a local thrift store for $275. I talked them down to $200. I plugged the unit in and the PCB seems to work fine. The monitor however seems to be shot. It has a brightness problem and vertical lines every half inch or so.  Without being able to work on it and adjust it I don't know how easy of a fix it is.

My questions:

1. Is it a fair price for $200?
2. What version cabinet is it. The pictures below are from my camera phone which sucks. I think it's a 1978 cabinet, but not sure
3. What would the costs be to fix? Monitor(if needed), Bezel, control panel needs replacement.

Also the thing had no sound when I fired it up.

I want to get this for restoration because I think someone else might destroy/hack the cab into something else.

The cabinet itself is in great shape just some normal wear and tear/ scraps and scuffs but nothing damaged greatly.

Let me know what you think.

Are you Fing kidding me? Sounds like a cap kit could fix the monitor problem, and anything else you could take your time to replace! That is an AWESOME deal my friend, go  for it!

Grab that thing now.  The only sound in space invaders is when the space ship go acrost the screen so you need to play for a little.  I could be wrong tho its been a long time.

Hi.

Grab it!!!

The brightness problem together with the vertical lines.....maybe it is ok, when you turn the SCREEN (a little poti directly at the ....oh ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---.....what is "Zeilentrafo" in english?? DST? The thick wire goes from there to the rubber thing on the tube.

ok - there are two pots , one for FOCUS the other one for SCREEN. If you turn SCREEN to high on a normal functioning cab, you get a bright picture with horizontal/vertical lines (depending on the directions of the monitor). Turn the SCREEN back a little and maybe tha picture is ok then.

EDIT: I just saw in the manual that the FOCUS pot is separated. So you must search the (damn) with the SCREEN-pot. I will post a picture as soon as I get one.

DO THIS after you bought the cab. If you correct the picture at the  shop, the price might rise  ;)

Sound : There are 8 (eight!!) different volume controls for the different game sounds. Maybe you need to adjust them there.

Get the manual here : http://www.crazykong.com/manuals/SpaceInvaders.man.pdf

Let us know about your decision. If you don't want it, I'll take it for 200$ incl. shipping to Germany  ;D

:lame: You are wrong....  space invaders also has the continually speeding up thump thump thump noise, the sound of your missile base being fired and the sound of hits on aliens, as well as the sound of your laser base being blown up..... Where were your ears when you were playing it!!!

I don't have a picture of the Space Invaders Cab or the monitor chassis.

The SCREEN pot should be located at the thing in the red rectangled part.

Thanks for all the advice.

I will grab it tonight. They are holding it for two days for me.

I checked eBay and it seems to vary on the price of the machine.

I picked up a Time Pilot that I'm still in the process of restoring so this one will have too wait a few months. But I'll check the monitor and sound out right away. So I can play it.  :)

Any idea where to get a replacement bezel?

I found a vinyl overlay for the control panel on ebay.

Alow any idea what colors are used on the cabinet? If I want to touch up or repaint the scuffs on the cabinet I'll need to color match them.

I'd buy it right away if I could get a classic like that for that price !

On the sound, indeed how can anyone forget the sound of Space Invaders ? That thick thud-bass sound with each step to the side.....that was one of it's major charms in the day.....

But this guy may never have seen a real cab of couse :)

...seriously....for $200. that's a no brainer purchase for that sort of arcade history.

There is so much repro stuff out there you can make that minty for under $500. total.....(maybe even less).

I just saw one end on eBay for $187 that was in Indiana.

I think I will grab this cab and refurb it. I would I don't have to put too much money into it.

You may want to shop around for a METAL control panel repro, not vinyl.

Does the vinyl look that bad?

I thought  I could ovrlay it on the current panel for now and wait for one to surface

OMG! I just realized that my church has had one of these collecting dust upstairs for years. If I remember correctly, the cabinet was in great shape, the monitor was operable, but needed tweaked, and the coin door was missing. I didn't know anything about arcade games while I was up there looking at this thing, but now I believe it is time to make a "donation" to the church to "unburden" them of this machine.  ;D ;D ;D

Sound's like a bargain cab and the screen problem could just be the brightness turned up too high on the LOPT. Mine gets green flyback lines when too high.

WTF's with these new emotes? Looks like a kiddie took over the place. It sucks to see people flaming posts with a stupid green blob saying LAME :(

I went to get that space invaders from the church I mentioned last night. They would have given it to me, except for the fact it was DUMPSTERED two weeks ago!!! That frikkin thing has set there for almost 2 decades, and they finally decide to get rid of it within 2 weeks of someone actually wanting it. Coincidence, or a sign I didn't need it. Either way, my wife sure smiled big when I found out it was gone.  :'(

I got the cab home this weekend and the sound does work during game play. Is there no sound in attract mode?

The lines in the monitor are gone with the pot adjustments. The screen is still really bright. and suggestions on correcting this?

I am glad for your good haul. Ironic how the machine itself will be invading the wife's space very soon.
