what would look better? a wg7400 with arcadevga or a wg9x series vga monitor?
-
vga arcade monitor..why..because that how it is..they look amezing but can ya really buy one..geez..$500 for a d9200 model.but take it this way..if you buy arcade monitor then you still have to shell out another $100 for andy's video card and probly have to get a j-pac if you wanna leave your jamma cabinet intact..
-
ya but i heard the vga monitor gives an image "too" crisp

heh...no it dont..
it gives you PERFECT pictures..at the moment..i dont have vga arcade monitor and i soooooooooooooo miss my 19" i had long time ago.
its not a computer monitor and piece of advice..NEVER use windows xp with these..it gives you jaggy/blocky image while windows 98,me,2000 gives you sooooooooooo clean images..
take a look brother..

this is enough to convince you that these monitors rule..next cabinet will have a vga arcade monitor no questions asked.. :)

Snaaake isn;t getting it. VGA monitors are more crisp than arcade monitors.
http://www.oscarcontrols.com/monitors.shtml
Check pics 6 and 7 for a comparison between arcade monitor and VGA compatible. Though an eygo will even be more crisp imho.
However a VGA arcade monitor is more authentic than a PC monitor.
I have PC monitor in my cab because I play some PC arcade ports.
I use advancemame to give mame that more authentic look (but still nowhere near authentic.
As snaaake put it, arcade vga monitors "rule", but for their purpose. If your purpose is to get arcade authentic then an arcade monitor is what you want.

The important factor is this:
A fixed frequency 31Khz (VGA) monitor can't be driven at the resolutions that most games run at. That does not mean it can't display them of course, but the display must be double-scanned or stretched to fit the screen. Modern VGA cards do this quite well but if you took the "Pepsi Challenge" of a 15Khz monitor against a 31Khz, running a game which originally used a 15Khz, you would definitely choose the former.
-
Can't the D9200 vga also be used at 15khz, giving it the true arcade appearance?
Wade
-
The D9200 doesn't have a fixed frequency, so I would think that it can.
Running one at 15Khz would kind of be a waste, though, considering the main selling point is its support for multiple frequencies (and slightly higher resolutions.. and well.. Snaaake would probably say the 15Khz looks better on it than a std res, but I don't know or see why).
-
I couldn't see why either... but I asked the same question to a WG tech and he said if you put the D9200 and another std. resolution monitor side-by-side running the same std. res. game, the 9200 would look better... ???

I never said that..i dont really know if it would look any better when you run at 15 khz with d9200...but it should look better when you are running 31 khz.
THATS what i meant..
31khz looks better to your eyes then 15khz and handling 15khz monitors is sort of a hassle(not anymore because of Andy's card).

It might be a "waste" to run a D9200 at 15khz, but it depends on what the user likes. If a person is making a mame cab and wants to perfectly duplicate the play and appearance of classic games, he should be able to do it with the D9200. And isn't the D9200 cheaper than a new 27" regular arcade monitor? Seems when I was looking through catalogs, the D9200 was cheaper than even some smaller regular arcade monitors. So it seems it would be the cheapest path to a brand new arcade compatible monitor, no? Is there a reason to spend more than $500 on a genuine arcade monitor?

What? Every time I've priced them they've been more expensive than a regular arcade monitor. If the D9200 is now cheaper than say a K7500, then there's no reason to use any other monitor if you're buying all new in that size.
-
The prices are really close..
-
Well I don't think two inches is going to matter too much to anyone so here's your standard res monitor price including 25" and d9200 price new (remember shipping will be more expensive on d9200). I thought this would be easier for the thread than everyone looking up the price on wellsgardner.com:
k7400 25": $365
k7400 27": $435
d9200 27": $495
Add 89 dollars for andy's video card with the k7400. Although if you are already planning on buying anywhere near decent video card or you are building a computer, the cost of andy's video card isn't going to count against you because you'd already be spending that on a video card in the first place.

I bought my k7400 25" for like $250 from american gaming..total was $272 so shiping is like $22.

Wow, that's a good deal. Got a website for them, SNAAKE?

Well, I did Google before asking. ;) I didn't think that this was the place, since they list the k7400 at $365. Gracias, though!
-
As I recall it was on sale when Snaaake got it and he also got a phone in discount. You may want to give them a call for a "real" price.

Ahhhhh. Thanks for the tip!

yeah it was funny..i was ready to pay atleast over $350 but the girl on the phone told my my local would be around $275 with shiping i was like... ;DWOW ! ;D

Perhaps I should have searched through more catalogs. :) The only 27" monitors I can find on Happ controls are $700, with exception of the D9200. Maybe their price is inflated.

If we are going to compare apples to apples we should forget about the 25" for this discussion. Doesn't matter if its half as much money and half the shipping cost, the same could be said of a variety of other smaller or lower quality monitors, right? (but.. for $275 it deserves its own thread for sure!)
So we are talking about practically the same price (mid $400 range) for a D9200 or a k7400 27", and previously I thought the price difference was large (in favor of the D9200).
It still seems to me that the D9200 would be favored by most people though, as it doesn't require Andy's $100 video card and it is more flexible (it can do everything a k7400 can do, plus more, right?)

It really all depends on where you look.. I wanted a 27" arcade monitor, because thats what my cab is setup for and I want it big :).. American Gaming has the D9200 for $450 while they didn't even list the 27" K7400.. So I was comparing the d9200 from AG to the K7400 from WG ($435)
Not too much of a difference.
I payed 50 for shipping...

I put the price in there because I thought the poster might not want to trade $70 + shipping for 2 inches, especially considering the majority of arcade machines use a 25".
Well the point is that the d9200, while apparently providing good picture, is not an "authentic" arcade monitor. Snake has been evangelizing the vga arcade monitors for months, but most people believe there is no single perfect solution for every person. The poster said what will look better.
We can't really help if you just say, "what looks better." An arcade monitor will make the majority of arcade games look really good, and you can get by on them with PC games. D9200, as far as I can tell, let's you play both pc and arcade games fairly well, but the image is still crisper than an arcade monitor. It's as close as you can get without going all the way to an arcade monitor.
