Title: I ---fouled up beyond all recognition--- up
Post by: USSEnterprise on April 17, 2006, 02:30:21 pm
I downlaoded a file from a P2P program. it was a jpg, similar to those that other normal teenagers look at. But for some reason, I cannot delete this file. Everytime I try to delete it, even in safe mode, it refuses. I do not want to bring my parents into this, because if they found that I had this picture, they would be pissed. Any advice?

Is your p2p program still sharing this file or "seeding"?  Perhaps that's why you cannot delete.

Tell your Mum that Daddy has been downloading naughty pictures - she'll believe you.

Go download another operating system thats bootable from a cd or floppy, like dos or knoppix (its a version of linux) and delete the file from the other OS.

1. Ya you could get D*mn Small Linux to delete that file, but thats a pain in the @$$.

2. see what program (if any) is using that file use this program.  Process Explorer (http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html)

3. Here's another program that might work (never tried it myself).  Dr. Delete (http://www.docsdownloads.com/dr-delete-1.htm)

4. Or here is the complicated solutions from Micro$haft (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=320081).

If that doesn't work try some old fashioned virus-scan software, like Norton's.  Run this before and after the delete.

Oh and if you have to look at "normal" pictures stay far away from P2P.  You're just asking for viruses.  BitTorrent all the way.

why don't you just fdisk your hard drive, then reload windows from scratch and then just say you had a virus problem, mind you serves you right you dirty little git :laugh2:

I'll try with a dos boot. I completely removed all my P2P programs. Even in safe mode, I still cannot be removed. It is read only, and cannot be changed from that

Try holding down the shift key while you delete it.  Not sure if it matters which one.  I always use the right-shift key.  This causes files to delete, rather than just move to the recycle bin.  It has the additional side-effect of deleting files that Windows otherwise says it can't delete.  Works about 99% of the time for me when I have a file I can't delete.

And scan for viruses, of course.

Is the file write protected?  ;)

If your boot partition is NTFS then DOS won't read it. You'll need to use a CD-ROM based Linux distribution, such as Knoppix.

If you have to use linux, use DSL (D*mn Small Linux)   It's basically just a compressed version of Knoppix.  It's only around 50mb.  You could easily get DSL to run off a flash drive.

Good luck.

I'll second the idea to use Knoppix to delete it, but really.... I'm just in this thread to giggle at your predicament :)

My PC's BIOS doesn't support flash drive boot. I'll get a knoppix image and burn it to CD. I have a partition of my drive running Fedora Core 3, but it can't access the NTFS partition. And I did run an AVG scan. It found two java viruses, which it easily removed. I guess computers are susseptible to STDs :laugh2:

have you tried booting into command line safe mode?  It basically looks like dos...except its not.   I had a corrupted video file that I couldn't delete until I did that.

Try plugging in a different keyboard.  After you downloaded the image your keyboard could have been exposed to a sticky substance which ruined the delete key.

exposed to a sticky substance

Should I even bother asking?

I suppose you could call it that, since the picture involved two women

At least its not as bad as the guy who destroyed his video card doing something with similar pictures

Mor information on what the exact error message sez would have helped.  Usually when it refuses to delete a file, it's cause it says that "The file is currently in use by another program" or something along those lines.

If you're using any of the standard (non torrent) P2P programs like kazaa, or bonzi buddy, they will continue to run in the background even after you "shut down" the program... you know, that little K in the system tray?  Anyhoo, since you're still sharing and uploading the file, you can't delete it.

So to delete files like that, reboot your PC, check the system tray to see if the P2P program is running, and try and close it from there.  right click on the icon and then choose exit.

Once it's done that, then you should be able to delete the files just fine.

Now that you've done that, go and get soem Spyware Remaval programs, because if you've installed Kazaa or Bonzi or a number of the others, you've infected your machine with some very ugly spyware.  Try Spybot Search And Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html) *AND* Lavasoft's Adaware (http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/).

Run BOTH of them at least twice in order to try and clean out the *crap* that the P2P companies load your PC up with.

The file wasn't in use by P2P, as he booted up into Safe Mode, so even if KaZaA is in his startup folder it wouldn't have been running in Safe Mode.

All mI need to do now is find those pics of Kim Katrall on the bridge of the Enterprise doing naughty things. They probably still exist somewhere.

Geez...I feel old.  In MY day we had to pull them off BBS's.  I remember one time I had a bunch of files queue'd up so there was a list..you know...similar to this:

naughtyfile1.gif  (because stuff was gifs in those days)
naughtyfile2.gif
naughtyfile3.gif
naughtyfile4.gif

filenames made familyfriendly by saint
etc.

my mom came downstairs to play solitare or something and I started freaking out...when she started to come around the desk I freaked and just hit the power button.  Obviously that looked suspicious..but it was better than my mom finding out what a pervert I was.

luckily my kids will never know an AT power supply where you can just hit the button....it's like dropping food..there's the 5 second rule!

Here's what I do, and it seems to work.

START
RUN
CMD
cd mypornfolder
erase pr0n.jpg
exit

And poof! The files are gone. I get these "tricky" files from bit torrents often. Good ol' DOS commands haven't let me down yet.
