Hello -
I have a 19" vertical arcade monitor that I am thinking of mounting horizontally for my project. Is there a way to get Windows / DOS to adjust to this, or am I stuck with it until I get into MAME?
Thanks,
Mike

do a google search on portrait pro software. it wil rotate windows for you. some video cards will as well.

Woo hoo! :) Thanks for the noob help.

A vertical monitor is just a horizontal monitor on its side. If you mount it horizontally, it'll work exactly the same as a horizontal monitor.

Just to elaborate a bit... you wouldn't need software to do this... That portrait software alluded to earlier in the thread is GREAT if you are going to run windows in a vertical cabinet (other wise you'd have to turn your head sidewise to navigate windows - think about it)
So yeah... the only difference between a vertical and horizontal monitor is the mounting.
The only other thing I could think of is if you rotate it you might need to degauss it if the colors get weird on you (you'll know)... some monitors auto-degauss. (degaussing has to do with the effect of the earth's magnetic field on your display)
Hope that helps a little...

you can rotate your monitor with the latest nvidia drivers

Woo Hoo! Again! :)
So an NVIDA Video card is the way to go aye? I am putting Andy's video card into my cab, and I'm assuming that nixes that path, so what options are left? Not that I mind leaving it vertical or turning my head sideways to get into MAME, it's just interesting to know.
Thanks,
Mike

Now I am confused =) Are you going to take your currently vertically oriented arcade monitor and re-mount it horizontally?
if so you are set and don't need to use nvidia's or portrait software.
If you're going to do a vertical cab, maybe one of those other solutions (portrait, nvidia drivers, etc ) will help with orientation of the display in vertical mode. You can also maybe get a front end that rotates itself (and if you never leave the front end) and you should be fine with that.

Yep, that's my plan. So, and this belies further my lack of understanding about displays, how does the computer know which way the screen is orientated then?
Assuming I didn't tweak anything, wouldn't this be like my turing this monitor I am typing on to its side and expecting the comp to adjust automatically?
Thanks for your patience,

Ok... If you are looking at a "normal" PC monitor in front of you. It is mostly like oriented horizontally. If you were to set it on it's side it would be oriented vertically.
PC's/video cards etc default to displaying horizontally. So if you take your PC monitor and put it on it's side your tasbar would be on the left (depending of course on the side you set it on) and you'd need to tilt your head to easily read text =P.
If you were to interface your PC to your Arcade monitor that is currently vertically oriented this is what woudl happen ( everything would be sidewise until you fired up a vertical MAME game that was set to orient properly).
If you were to take your currently vertically mounted arcade monitor and physically re-mount it horizontally you would NOT need to make any flipping/portrait software/nvidiea drivers or anything as it would be oriented "normally" (unless of course you somehow manage to mount it TOTALLY upside down - but after screaming out loud you could just physically flip the screen)
Although it won't help understand it's neat to look at oscar's pics of his arcade monitor using ArcadeVGA http://www.oscarcontrols.com/arcadevga/ (http://www.oscarcontrols.com/arcadevga/) I saw a picture somewhere that would illustrate the point... (will try to find it and edit this post)
good luck,

It doesn't.
A real arcade board doesn't either, if it's a vertical game and you hook it to a horizontal monitor, you have to turn your head sideways to read the high score and other text, and the joystick control would feel wierd (up is left, etc.). If you took that exact same monitor and flipped it 90 degrees and hooked the board up to it again, it would look normal, and the joysticks would feel right. My cab has a rotating monitor in it, and I use it mostly for real boards. (though I am trying to set up a dedicated MAME computer for it)
