Hello everyone,
I wanted to take my 27" tv (with no s-video), and convert it to a vga monitor. I know this means taking out the soldering gun. Has anyone done this?

It'll take alot more than just soldering, you'd have to basically re-engineer your TV, as VGA monitors and TVs are quite a bit different (with the exception of using CRTs to display the image).

give this link a try. they sell chasis to convert your tv to an arcade monitor. i've never tried it, so i have no idea how well they work. i just thought i'd give you a heads up.

If you already have a soldering gun it should be easy:
Step 1. take your gun and TV to a pawn shop and get money for them.
Step 2. With the money in hand, go buy a d9200 from Wells Gardner.
Piece of cake!

Thanks android ;D . Okay my fault, I walked right into that one.
I've just been torn between spending more money on a Arcade Monitor for my machine, or just get a Tv with S-video. I know I will find that answer back in the forum.
I just wanted to know if anyone has taken a basic television set (without s-video) and modified it to become either a RGB monitor, or engineer it to use s-video.

Seriously though, it would cost you more money to convert your TV to a VGA monitor than just buying the d9200: the only thing you could possibly reuse is the tube and you would have to design special circuitry from scratch.
Remember that VGA != RGB (at least not necessarily), so here are your options:
1. Buy the kit mentioned above to convert your TV to an RGB monitor (no vga here. Just plain arcade-type monitor). i.e. you can't drive it directly with your PC. Read this faq on connecting an arcade monitor to your pc.
2. Buy the d9200 if you want big-size VGA compatibility. There's currently no known way to convert a TV to VGA
Hope this helps.

You CAN drive it directly with your PC -- With the ArcadeVGA.
Look at it this way:
If you can get a non-working 27" tv (with good tube) for 10 bucks from a tv repair shop, spend $95 on the chassis converter from 8liners, and spend $95 on the ArcadeVGA (including cable), You've got a $200 plug and play arcade monitor solution..
The D9200 (with shipping) will cost you more that TWICE that much.
It may be worth it, especially if you can get a good tube for nothing or cheap from a repair shop.
Maybe that's what I'll do (It's much easier to spend $95 here, $95 there, $10 bux for a broken tv than it is to spend $500 up front for a D9200, which a lot of people are driving with the ArcadeVGA ANYWAY!)

at radio shack, you can pick up an s-video to composite converter for like 18 bucks. may seem expensive, but in retrospect it's not.
PS...the WG D9200 has a VGA input. There's no need for the VGA/arcade converter card.
