Title: Stargate: IT's ALIVE!!!!!!!!
Post by: F1r3f1ght3r on February 19, 2006, 12:53:11 pm
(http://www.dlturner.com/images/stargate/IMAGE_00009.jpg)

We are thinking of painting it orange... and putting a 4 player panel on it..

Not...

This will be our first not from scratch project together (... he (8yrs old) was just as excited as I was when I told him that were going to pick a cab up last night.... my wife just shook her head but, at least she helped me carry it to the basement)

Overall it is is pretty good shape, slight damage to the bottom, looks as though it had been painted white at one time... most of the white patches are coming off fairly well. has the original panel in it. monitor is pretty good shape with no burn-in. doors are all in pretty good shape as well.

Although, My first choice would be to turn it back into a stargate, thinking right now towards turning it into a williams multi as I'm not having any luck finding complete working stargate board sets. being in Nebraska.... not many options other than online.

only had the ppc-6700 handy.... so will post some better pictures when I can track down the camera.

Looks like a good project.  Keep us posted on your decision with the multi-williams and the progress.

Awesome!  Where in NE are you from...i'm from the Omaha area...don't see too many BYOAC'ers from NE.  Good luck on your project.  I'd love to see the finished product.

Father and son projects are the best.  I love the time I spend with my sons working on this stuff, even if they're just standing there on stools watching.

I vote against the Multi option. Return it to original Stargate. I never liked the multied classics. That's what a MAME machine is. It saves a crappy non classic machines from the garbage.  Unless you build your own cab.

You can easily find the boards on eBay, RGVAC, or here in no time, just have a little patience ;).

I would love to own an original Stargate or Defender. One of my must haves.

Good luck with the project, and oh yea, make sure that your son really gets to help, otherwise he will get disheartened and go play PS2 or Xbox. It will be hard to not get frustrated and just hurry through stuff so as to get it done, but if you boy contributes allot of the work, he will always remember these times the rest of his life. And he can brag to his friends, look at what my dad and I built!!

Cant wait to see your progress :)

I agree with much of the sentiment, but think that there are definite exceptions.

The MW would be at the top of my exception list, if for no other reason than the CP -- the "classic" MW layout is truer to the experience (using 8-ways instead of 2-ways notwithstanding) than your average (or even exceptional) MAME CP.

Cheers.

Hey 2Pac, I'm from Lincoln! There are a few of us out here  ;D

Nice find F1r3f1ght3r. Tough call on what to do with it. You probably should restore it but then again you both would probably have more fun with a multi.

You know tho. I have a couple of "bare-bones" cabs sitting in my garage collecting dust. Perhaps you could use one of those? We could figure out something for a trade. Got any shelled out tabletops or cocktails around?

Decided on returning it to a stargate. There are just too many original parts to do anything else and in the end... I don't think that I would be truley happy knowing that I had the chance to restore it and passed on the opportunity. As it turns out.... after my first post... I have been finding auctions and FS postings for the needed parts. As deefish said, I should "just have a little patience".

besides... I have it in my head that, while we are working on this machine, we will take measurements and draw up plans for scratch built replica cab that we will then use for a williams multi.

2PacMan: I live in waverly.  It's always nice to see others from nebraska post here.

IG-88: no cocktails right now... but I have a line on a couple of shells that I will know more about after this weekend. I will PM you if they turn out to be anything.

While my son, and daughter for that matter, enjoy spending time playing the xbox and PC games... they still spend a fair amount of time playing different games on the mame cabinet. I'm just glad that they have taken an interest in "Dad's winter hobby" to the point wanting to do hands on work with me. My son learned to strip/crimp/solder by helping me work on our police force PIN and a couple of scratch built cabs.

Wow, you have a Police Force pin?...what a coincidence...I have one too!  I love that game, it's so much fun...one of only 2 pins i own, but it was on my want list.  Well, there are at least 2 good working Police Force's in NE now.

the police force was a gift from my wife a few years ago. I love to badger people into playing and then start hitting the sweet spot for the Unlimited Million....  ;D

there is a glimpse of it in the control panel pic above..

there are only two other pins that I REALLY want.... rescue 911 and Fire!

What a nice gift from your wife.  I had to drive to Des Moines IA in a blizzard to get mine late last year, it was quite an adventure and a cool memory.

Yeah, i love to get the unlimited million!  What's also fun is get some friends over...then they start beating you and they think they are going to beat the "pinball expert, the guy who OWNS the game", then on the 3rd ball just steal their high score!  It's so funny to watch their faces....because the center ramp is pretty easy to hit for beginners, but the one on the right hand side takes some practice to hit...but i've got the shot down now.

Sorry, i don't have either of those other 2 pins on your want list, the only other pin I have is a Xenon.  The only other pin on my want list is...don't laugh....Super Mario Pinball.  I see the game gets terrible reviews, but I always enjoyed playing it when i was younger.  Haven't seen any around here for sale.

The bigger the better  I always say....  my compression utils are not working on the gallery... I will correct when I get a chance.

That would be one of my first scratch built cabs.... Vadercade "powered by the dark side"

Cheesy name I know... but even though I prefer names without "cade" in them... I haven't been able to bring myself to rename it. besides... this has been the kid's favorite.

Progress to this point....

cleaning and measuring (60% completed)

Will begin wood repair after cleaning is done.

Will pick up paint this weekend after hunting trip.... found match colors HERE (http://www.appolo.com/colorcodes/stargate.htm)

won a R8948 CPU board (Revision A). unknown as to the working status.

watching several D8224's (Sound Board)

watching a complete D8730 with roms

With a couple of phone calls, I was able to track down a non working C8783 widget board. there is one that I am watching also. If anyone knows of a working board that is available... PM me please.

will be ordering harness kit from bob roberts to create my own until I can find an original.

Anyone know/have the dimensions of the CPU/ROM/WIDGET mounting plate?

that's all for now...

no... hence no PM. there only turned out to be one that was even remotely in tact and it had extensive water damage to the base, top and inards...

but on a happier note...

I did win the complete D8730 with roms and the other C8783... just the sound board to go!   ;D

wire harness complete.

CPU showed up today in the mail. ROM board connector pins in VERY bad Shape, some slight acid damage on the board, but only in a couple of ground locations. I will work on this tonight.

still need cpo... but that can wait

Still no Joystick, but there is enough to do to keep us busy.

Stick came yesterday. kids had a snow day so had Jr remove the Control panel and remove exsisting buttons, joystick and wire harness. will start patching the odd holes tonight.

most of my time this weekend and last night has been taken up with RAM errors. After further review the CPU had worse acid damage than first thought, have had to replace 3 dram sockets so far and after testing with the meter last night, looks like one more will need to be replaced. sucks cause I ran out of spares... will be running to RS to pick some today. The good news is that it appears the the installed 4116's are good so after the last socket is replaced, I should be able to move on to the ROMS.
