Title: Back in Black - completed pics
Post by: Bomber on February 16, 2006, 05:55:15 pm
Man, do these things eat up your spare time!!!

Picked up the empty cab locally. the PC is an old thing I had lying around. It has a vertical 17" CRT monitor and only vertical games installed. Using GameLauncher as the front-end just because of how simple it was to set up for vertical resolution.

Way too many buttons for most games I play on it, but the holes were there and it was easier to throw some buttons in the holes than blank them. The admin buttons on the front are coin, pause and exit (the two outside buttons need to be hit simultaneously to exit so that an errant knee can't ruin your game).

Not much else to say, so here are some pics....

Agreed.  You need black player start buttons.  Just looks odd with white.

Marquee is killer.  What did you use as the marquee retainer?  Very clean.  Well done.

I agree - they stand out like sore thumbs. Next time I order enough stuff I'll look at getting a pair, but I can't justify freight to NZ for a couple of buttons. Its tempting just to put two black pushbuttons in there for now.

Thanks man - any time you want to help kick some ass on 1942 you know where to find me...

Acca-dacca are usually chugging along in the background when I play :)

I'm amazed how well the marquee came out. The photos don't really do it justice. When is it backlit it looks far king great. The front half of the retainer was on the original cab when I bought it. I just just taped it from behind to the front with black insulation tape.

I'd given up on a fluro for it - just couldn't justify the cost. On the way out of the hardware store I saw the plastic fluro lights that you hang from the bonnet (hood to all you USAians) of your car for 7 bucks!! Works like a champ!! Can't imagine the cab without it now.

Nice looking cab - reminded me of a passage from Douglas Adams' "Restaurant at the End of the Universe":

Quote
"It's the wild colour scheme that freaks me," said  Zaphod  whose
love  affair  with this ship had lasted almost three minutes into
the flight, "Every time you try to  operate  one  of  these  weird
black  controls that are labelled in black on a black background,
a little black light lights up black to let you know you've  done
it. What is this? Some kind of galactic hyperhearse?"

The walls of the swaying cabin were also black, the  ceiling  was
black,  the  seats  -  which  were  rudimentary  since  the  only
important trip this ship was designed  for  was  supposed  to  be
unmanned   -  were  black,  the  control  panel  was  black,  the
instruments were black, the little screws that held them in place
were  black,  the thin tufted nylon floor covering was black, and
when they had lifted up a corner of it they had  discovered  that
the foam underlay also was black.

where do you get black player start buttons?

Check the buy/sell/trade forum.  There's a discussion going on, but I honestly haven't read the thread, so no promises of a source.

Nice work Bomber.

I like the white buttons. Gives it some contrast.
Did you get them off Trademe?
