Title: Damage HD need help on Mame
Post by: Harpal on December 29, 2005, 07:34:32 pm
The Mame cab i purchase recently only had a 40gb hard drive inside of it, so i bought a 120gb hard drive and was going to use it as a slave drive and put all the Roms and songs for the jukebox onto it,
But as i was moving the first hard drive it fell out of my hand and since then it ain't be working every time i start up the cab the Mame screen comes after along time and then its takes even longer to get to the gamelist and by this time the hard drive get so hot like you can smell it burning, so i just switch it off, as i know the hard drive has died on me, now even though i do have a 120gb hard drive i just bought i dont have a clue on how to set up  Mame in the first place, i do know how to use Mame32 but not a clue on using it on dos, is there away i can run Mame32 and when it start up  it runs straight into the game list, so i wont need to click on the Mame folder on the desktop and then the .exe  file to go into the game list....
i tried using the boot up CD which load arcade OS for you, but i am getting no sound at all, and on top of this i don't have a clue on how to install more Roms???? i really do need help big time now, as my Mame cab is just sitting there with nothing, can anyone help me out or if anyone lives close by me come around and show me how it is done......
 ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

You're not going to either. That's a windows version of Mame.

You're either exaggerating in this post a great deal, or I'm thinking someone set this up for you the first time. Try asking 1 question per post and we'll start answering them. This post is too confusing to help you with.

your disk is probably bad. Here is what you must do:
1. Go out and buy a new drive.
2. Take the old drive and place it on a piece of concrete.
3. Take a sledge hammer and hit the drive repeatedly, until it is no longer recognizable as a hard drive.

Sounds like you are new to this. (computers). You will need dos drivers for your soundcard. Skip dos . Install XP. Learn how to install windows command line mame. There will be a folder there. This is where you will place your roms. Find a frontend you like (I use Mamewah and so do a lot of others). There is a setup program for this frontend now. There is heaps of sites dedicated to setting up this stuff. Use Google!
Btw what CPU are you using some smaller processors don't like big hard drives.
Oh yeah and BACKUP everything!
Hope this points you in the right direction.

There are a lot of shops that will take a damaged hard drive and attempt to recover it's content. If you don't fiddle around with the hard drive you managed to drop, some or even all of the data may be recoverable in which case you should take it to one of those sort of shops and get them to take a look at it. That way you won't have to learn a thing about mame.

Also, if you're running windows XP on the computer that you post on, go to start>all programs>accessories>accesibility>on screen keyboard and hit the lock button. This would be a good temporary solution for your 'jammed' caps lock button...

i came close to that afew time, but thought i was going to get it wrong silly me i was going to throw it out of my window,
using a sledge hammer sounds like much more fun...
