So the basement finishing job is almost finished, carpet got laid today. Next is final touchup, then decorating and furnishing. I can't wait to get it all online. Here's a few pix...
Game room carpet under black light (temporary black light, permanent black light fixtures in ceiling not yet mounted):

Game room paint job under regular lighting (on a dimmer):

A shot of the bar and dragon lamp looking into the game room. The opening is really a set of double-sliding-pocket doors so the game room can be completely closed off:

My poor abused air hockey table earlier in the construction:

Bar early in construction:

Fun stuff!

good choice on the carpet
very nice, so when are you sending out our invites ;D
-
Looking really nice. Good choice with the carpet, I really like the way it looks.
And that bar is AWESOME. Great job.
-
i love the bar, would love to see it once it is all finished also i love that carpet....
how much was it, and where abouts was it purchase......
-
i feel another book coming...... byoar build your own arcade room
-
Grats saint, that's great!
Wish I could talk my wife into letting me do something like that next year when we finish our basement. =)
I think you chose well on the carpet.
-
...god I cant wait to get a house. This entire 'getting a Ph.D.' thing is seriously delaying my home theatre/bar/gameroom building.
-
That's really, really nice Saint. Did you have a local carpet company order the carpet for you or did you order it yourself and have someone install it?
-
That looks really nice. Hope to see more pics before it is complete.
If I am correct, in buying Project Arcade, some of my finances were exchanged for a small part of that room. You don't have to thank me publically, a PM will be fine.
-
Additionally, since I purchased the book as well, this gives me the right to come over when it is finished and play your games. I only bought one copy, so I will not drink your beer. However, if I do decide to come over, I may purchase another so said beer will indeed be "on the house."
:)

If he got the standard percentage, in the 4th pic, the 3rd drywall screw from the top left has your name on it.
LOVE the carpet. Looks straight out of the roller rink arcade I frequented in the 80s. Do you find the blacklight bothers peoples eyes if used as a primary light source???
I seriously need to move to a house with a real basement.
-
Fantastic carpet ! Where to get it ? Do they send overseas ;) ;) ??
Looks very good ! Keep us posted
-
wish i had a basement yours look very nice ....my bar is only 14x20.....very cramp at times

More pictures...

Game room, lights on, black lights off. Air hockey, Gyruss, Crystal Castles, and Double Donkey Kong in place so far. Still missing overhead fluorescent black light fixtures.

Same angle, lights off, temporary black light fixtures on.

Looking at bar after Christmas party. Items of note - dragon lamp, lava lamp, and closed doors leading into arcade.
Close up of barstools. $128 from Lowe's, item # 5407. You can't find it online, you have to luck out in finding them at the store. Not all stores carry them, and they're non-restock meaning they aren't ordering any more. Fairly comfortable, felt/suede leather type of seat, swivel, and much cheaper than the $1000 barstools I first liked! We have 6 comfortably spaced around the bar, although the spot under the dragon lamp is kind of the short end of the stick.
From the living room/tv room area looking back into the bar area and game room doors.
Lesse.... carpeting came from http://www.kidcarpet.com/ - it's "Space Voyage (http://www.kidcarpet.com/product.php?pID=122)" and as you can see it looks better live than the horrible picture they have. 12' x 26' cost us $783, and it was like another $225 or so to install including pad, so about $1000 in the carpet for just that room. Ouchie on the price but worth it I think. We had the company that did the rest of the carpet installation (sub-contracted through Lowe's where we bought the rest of the carpet) do the game room as well.
Ed is right, each of you who purchased Project Arcade have a drywall screw imbedded with your name on it - thanks!
Cheers!

That's a sweet looking set-up.
I want to say something negative about the stools but I will wait for somebody else to approach the subject and then jump on their bandwagon. ;)
-
Yer killin' me smallz! I wanna see an updated pic with that gaudy white outlet cover on that nicely trimmed out post swapped out with something darker ;)
I really like the drop ceiling (like that style and look). For some reason, those segmented tiles look better to me than the big chunky ones, nice choice to me.
Did you do all that work, or did you farm it out? I wanted to ask if that's tile on the coutnertop of the bar and if you could take a better pic of it. Looks like nice work!
Sweet looking gameroom too! It's gotta be nice having a gameroom come wrapped with a house around it ;)
-
Oh, Bones how 'bout this.
Nice frilly chairs, nancy! ;D
Throw down Bones! ;)
Oh, hey....seeing as how you've referenced that dragon lamp a few times now, I think we ALL know you like the thing and are doing the backhanded-bragging-about-it thing, so take us a better pic of that so we can see it mo betta.
And all you hosers got screwed. The proceeds from MY purchases bought the lightbulb in the dragon! I think I'll also take credit for the non-working blacklight fixtures too, at least until they work ;D
-
Ed is right, each of you who purchased Project Arcade have a drywall screw imbedded with your name on it - thanks!

Does that mean we can come and visit our drywall screw whenever we want? ;D :P
Looks really great Saint. I really like the look of that bar. And drew is right, that drop ceiling looks good in that room. Good choice.
Wait... did I just say Drew was right....
-
I love it, congrats.
-

Wait... did I just say Drew was right....
Too late, sucker ;) I've got the proof now!
Saint, are the blacklight fixtures gonna be a separate switch so you can run regular lighting off one circuit and blacklight off another? I think that's what I was deciphering from some information I read here, but I mighta just been having a brain fart.
-
Awesome work Saint!
Have you decided what you'll use, if anything, to decorate some of the wall space?? ie mounted arcade posters/flyers or a wall mounted lcd screen to play your 80's music video clips! ;)
-
looks nice......
now let's see some more pictures of them games.....rumor has it that's where my missing buttons are ;)

Saint, are the blacklight fixtures gonna be a separate switch so you can run regular lighting off one circuit and blacklight off another?
Yes! I was worried about too much black light bothering people. There are 6 can lights with regular lighting on a dimmer switch for varying levels of regular light, and the two fluorescent fixtures are on an on/off switch (total of 8 black light tubes). I'm suspicious I may reduce that to 4 total tubes when I see how it looks, it may be a bit much.

Oh yeah, I've got a few ideas/plans already. I have a bunch of arcade artwork that's going to be going up, at least potentially. I have a Dragon's Lair and a Space Ace full sized movie style poster, I have a framed Machine Bride of Pinbot backglass, a variety of marquees and such, the Blik Space-Invaders decals (http://www.whatisblik.com/invader.html), and invisible black-light reactive paint from clearneon.com (check out the demo picture (http://www.clearneon.com/demo.php)). The paint is invisible with regular lighting, shows up with black lighting. I'll also be doing a few other things but I'm going to wait to present those, it may take me a while to get to it. :)
Oh, and pictures:
Dragon Light close-up.
My wife hauled that back from a trip to Mexico. Still have to find the globe that goes with it over the light.

It's a black granite tile with flecks of other colors in it, looks very cool in person.

Here is the perfect table to fit under your dragon lamp:

They are selling two of them ... maybe you could get a deal on buying both .....

Wow. I've been planning exactly the same thing out for so long... but have absolutely no carpentry skills. Now I feel all inadequate and Liberal.
Seriously, I have the space for it in my basement but have no idea where to start other than finding someone to do it for me and writing out a blank check for funds I don't have.
-
Err... that's what I did. Took out a home equity line of credit and started writing checks :)
-
How much are you into it so far, then, if I may ask? Feel free to tell me to get bent on this one... just curious, since I actually am working on a home equity line application this week.
-
Well... it went about double what I naively originally thought we'd have to spend.

Man it's sweet. Just screaming for a Chexx bubble hockey though ;)
That granite looks good, I was just in HD looking at some, very nice job with it.

man, it must have taken you a while to write on all of those screws ;D :P
-

Have to or chose to? Was it upgrades or unforeseen requirements?
And would I expect $5k? $10k? $15k? Anyone can answer this, I have no idea what a basic slab concrete with no water issues basement finishing job should cost.
-
Chad, Shouldn't be too expensive to throw some drywall up. I did half my basement on my new house about 600 sq ft of space for about 1500 total. Walls and ceiling. Saint said he spent a g on carpet for that small space. You Know a bar that pretty is gonna run into some change. Think about how long your gonna be in the house before dropping serious change. I put about 10k into the last basement and then the wife decided we had to build a new one. Of course I didn't realize near that much out of it when I sold.
-

Thats what happend to me last year. Just finished everything, carpet, new walls, built a new bar. Hand painted stenciling on the walls(looked sweet). and about 2 weeks after it was done she wanted a new house. Now she wont let me do that again in the basement.
-
I started a thread in EE so that we can give Saint his thread back... but I have no intention of leaving this house.
-
Very cool Saint. My local glow-bowling alley has that carpet, looks amazing under the black lights.
-
and about 2 weeks after it was done she wanted a new house. Now she wont let me do that again in the basement.
Pfft... tell her to get her own job and buy her own damn house.
-
So, when can we all come over?
:)
-

That's the problem. She about doubles my income every year, not that I'm complaining
-
Shut your yap and work on better ways to hide your spending of her money. You are our only hope, Dopi-Wan ;)
-
That's the problem.
-

You're right, that is the problem, at least in terms of who wears the pants.
A good problem to have, though.
Not really a problem. I think we both wear pants last time we checked, it's Mission that has that problem. I can do pretty much whatever I want money wise but so can she.
-
Did you bastardize the www.bar-gear.com L-bar plans?
I'm waiting for those no-email-replying MFers to respond with an expected date on the updated info so I can plan out that part of my basement...
-
Not specifically - I never looked at their plans, but I looked at dozens of pictures of different bars, including theirs. Then I took the features of all the ones I liked, gave it to my contractor, and said "make me one with these features" and away he went :)
-
I used these plans for my first bar. My next one is going to be straight, but I will probably use the plans again for measurements, etc.

Not to point out the obvious or anything, but where's the MAME cab!?!?!?
;D
-
Upstairs in my study of course :)
-
You've got a study?
Nice, Mr. Howell...

New picture of my bar/gameroom area. I present to you . . . the perfect fridge!
-
New picture of my bar/gameroom area. I present to you . . . the perfect fridge!
Liar. There's all that empty space on the door, which the perfect fridge would NOT have in it, there's only a half-filled shelf on the top, someone tainted your fridge with Sharp's, and the labels on those beers look mysteriously like 1UP ;) ;D
-
Man you got to do something about that "SHARPS" that stuff is crap. It is the worse NA beer on the market. You should try the "AMBER Odoules". Its by far a much better beer.
Ive tried prolly about 80% of the NA beers and the AMBER is the best.
-
Don't ask me, I don't drink it -- I stock that for my buddy. That entire shelf of Strawberry Blonde? That's mine -- mmmmMMMmmmmMMMMm good! :)
-
Were -I- Come from, the best kind of beer is FREE BEER!
Umm, is that fridge just siting in the middle of the hall? If so get that thing a home, pronto!
-
Do your buddy a favor and pick up some Claus-something or other beer if he needs an NA beer. The Odouly's Amber, like the previous poster said, is pretty decent, but the stuff I'm talking about there (Clausthalen? Clausthaler? Claus-whatever ::) ) is quite possibly the best NA beer out there.
Sharp's sucks. Big time.
-
Lookin quite fantastic!
man, it must have taken you a while to write on all of those screws ;D :P
I imagine the scene to be something like Steve Martin in "The Jerk"... writing out checks for the OptiGrab settlement :D

Yes yes, one of my very favorites too. Of course, my local store stopped carrying Pete's.
-
I have my local liquor store order me xeveral cases at a time, no one here carries it :(

The guy who runs my local shop it an A-Hole. I mean, world class. He'd probably do it but would want 3x value on principle.

Building a new one is good. You can double the size of your game room!!! ;D
-
I guess I don't check this forum often enough. Your room looks fantastic, Saint. I'm quite amazingly jealous. ;)
-S
-
Wait until I'm done with it :) I'm very happy with how it's turning out and I have not yet begun to decorate!
-
Not the gameroom per se, but part of my other current obsession (jujitsu). We devoted one room in the basement to jujitsu. Not much there yet, but we have a mat and a kicking/punching station, and a TV on the wall. What else do we need? :)
-
The game-room sign pointing to the door into the game room appropriately enough. Bought on ebay, they're on there all the time. Very happy with it...
-
And here's what happens when you put all your money into refinishing the basement, and don't have anything left over for furnishing :)
If you look closely on the wall, you can see the wide screen TV. See it? No? Over there against the blue wall? No?...
When you can't afford to furnish things, the kids will take it over! Chad, you listening?
(Course, I think a ball crawl fits in with the theme of the basement overall, but I want my wide-screen TV :) )
-
When you can't afford to furnish things, the kids will take it over! Chad, you listening?
Already happened. Every part of my house is covered in clutter.
-

Mine too, and I don't have kids. ;)

A lot of it is mine and my wife's... we have bad clutter habits and our kids have picked them up too.

That you know of

I heard on the Police scanner they think he had a kid last tuesday. They want to find him and ask him about it. Something about the kid's parents being pretty unhappy he did it.

I have two friends that are involved in hapkido (similar to jujitsu I think).
What country does jujitsu come from?
Also, how large is your house? I mean you have a jujitsu room, a game room, a study room.
If anybody is giving you trouble on the Message Boards you can locate them on the people finder and give them the beat down with your jujitsu skills. ;D
-
Heh. Basement is pretty big, has 5 rooms + bathroom. Study is a bonus room over the garage so it's not particularly glamorous. More of a place where I keep my junk.
Jujitsu (the branch I study) is Japanese. Stuff gets a bit murky when you ask where things came from, it all seems to have filtered through the Shaolin monks at some point. I'm only a yellow belt (second belt) at the moment so my Jujitsu-fu is not terribly strong. I'm about to test for orange (third belt) though!

Moved the Kangaroo and Multi-Pac into the game room. Two pinballs and two cabinets left to go, hopefully this weekend!
-
Interesting arrangement. Why that pattern?
-
If he put them against the wall in that area, it looks like he'd only fit three instead of four.
-
But now he has a bunch of wasted space behind them. That looks like a better spot for pins than vids, unless there is something behind them that needs to be there.
-
But now he has a bunch of wasted space behind them. That looks like a better spot for pins than vids, unless there is something behind them that needs to be there.
My guess is he made a fort behind the games and he goes in there when he wants to be alone :)
-
If that were the case they'd be facing inwards. Duh.
-
Heh. I kind of like the fort idea.
The darkness is deceptive - those are all actually against a wall that comes into the room (it's the backside of my wiring closet for the house). I've artificially lightened this photo so you can see it:
I like the cabinet angled - it's a bit more interesting and you can see more cabinet side art. It does however protrude just a bit more into the room. When I get the pinball cabinets put in place I might decide I want the room back and switch it back to this:
Not quite as eye-pleasing though . . .
-
Makes sense with the protruding wall back there. That's what I figured.
-
But now he has a bunch of wasted space behind them. That looks like a better spot for pins than vids, unless there is something behind them that needs to be there.
I think he left it open so that if you were to come and visit, you could see your drywall screw. ;D

Game room carpet under black light (temporary black light, permanent black light fixtures in ceiling not yet mounted):
That's what i'm talkin about :D
-
You know what, Im gonna use that in my basement office. Now is there a modern furniture/cabinetry style that would go with that without resorting to cheesy 80's styles?
-
Yeah, do it up with bowling alley furniture.
-
Hey Saint, I hvae 2 questions. How wide are the double pocket doors? And what is the height from the floor to the ceiling tiles?
Zud
-
:applaud:
Nice carpet - nice bar - and....of course.....NICE GAMEROOM !!
Man, how many books have been sold ? Three billion ? ;D
A basement with 5 rooms + bathroom......I'm not sure if I want to see the rest of your house/garden ;)
-
Saint, can you provide some details on the light fixtures? I'm working on this right now and could use the examples. What you described is nearly exactly what I want to accomplish.
