Title: New heights of nerdiness
Post by: paigeoliver on December 07, 2005, 07:35:07 am
Not sure which is nerdier, all the mame stuff I have done, or the fact that I just ordered 272 D&D minatures.

I finally gave up and tried the 3.5 version of D&D and started going to some RPGA events. This new version is very slanted towards the use of figures, much more than any of the older ones. I had one figure for my halfling character, but I didn't have any others. So I bought a gigantor herd of them for my homegames. Plus I am going to bring them to the events, because so many of the guys who run the game seem to have 1 of every miniature. Which is great if you are collecting them, but you generally fight whole hoards of goblins and such.

I largely based my purchases on price, buying hoards of the cheapest minis, and relatively few of the more expensive ones. Of course those terms are very relative, since most of the ones I bought were like 50 cents, and they had ones on there that were $10, $20 or even more. I only bought like 2 of them that were more than $1.

Yup.  Sign of a true nerd.

I gave up buying figurines when they stopped making them out of lead.  Just didn't seem the same.

Ral Partha's factory was located probably 2 or 3 miles from me.  As often as I dumspter dove there, there was nothing to find.  I guess they re-melted all the failed castings.

I actually stopped playing after 2nd edition came out.  Friends lost interest, and when you were stuck being DM constantly, there just wasn't much to do.

They still make the metal ones. But I hated the metal ones, they were really expensive and you had to paint them and they were damaged easily. I like the new plastic ones, no painting and they are dirt cheap.

I was out of D&D for a long time, but I met a few friends 2 years ago who played, and now I play more often than I even did in high school. Although lately it has been a lot more game shop events than home games.

I'll probably go to the dollar store and pick up a couple $1 action figures and mount them on bases to use for giants, as I AM NOT going to pay $20 a pop for giant figures.

Captain Kirk would never have collected figurines, but Captain Picard would have.  That's because Captain Kirk was a way better captain of THE STARSHIP ENTERPRISE than Picard!  He could kick his ass too!  Yeah!

I'm going to go watch all 79 original episodes right now!!!!!

Wouldn't that be new lows of nerdiness...there's nothing redeeming about purchasing 272 D&D miniatures.

I used to play D&D when I was in High School. Great game. We used to do it all on graph paper, and used 8, 12, 16 sided dice. Is this still the case? Hah, we used this book (I still have it at home...)

People keep mentioning these "MAME Nerds" but I never know who they are.  Every time I come here all I see is us cool people.  Guess all the nerds leave before I get here. *shrug*

A glimpse into my D&D past...

See? All cool people again...http://www.retroblast.com/reviews/dungeons.html

I still have both of those books and several others. I have no idea where they are now, but I remember coming across them once when looking for something else not all that long ago.

No way, chicks will find a good MAME cab appealing for an hour or two.

They will never find those little elf dudes appealing.

No, but I knew one that used d30's as Benwa Balls.  That theres a geeky chick.

Ah, high school...

I was actually president of my high schools D&D club for a while... After they changed the name to adventure society cause we were all demon worshippers or whatever the popular media said at that point in the mid '80s.
