Title: Do you need new roms when you upgrade Mame
Post by: marcopolo on January 27, 2003, 11:50:07 am
I'm sure this is a stupid question, please bear with me:

If you upgrade from Mame.62 to Mame .63 do you need to get a new set of roms?

No you do not need the new roms when upgrading, but that also means you cant play the newly added roms till you put them in.

Well if there has been a new dump or driver changes you might need a new set.  Happens sometimes when they remove samples as well.  And to play the newly added games you do need the new roms :)

I'm disappointed in you guys.  Neither one of you gave the "right" answer.  :P

To answer your question usually not enough to re-download them, but in each version it is possible that they change enough to give you problems.

What you need to do is get yourself a rom managment program, either clrmamepro or romcenter.  For noobs I always reccomend romcenter as it's easy to deal with.

Now download the latest dat file to go with it and it will scan your roms for corruption.  90% of the time it will be able to automatically "fix" many roms that you downloaded as rom changes are often merely some file renaming or a few bytes trimmed off of the data here and there.

Remember rom managers are a godsend.  Scan your roms every time you upgrade mame.

Now will this method work if you're going from say version .61 to .64? Just wondering...

It all depends on the changes that have been made.  Just run your .61 set through w/ a .64 dat (make sure you have the latest version of the scanner though)  It will fix what it can and then you can download the rest.  I can't cite any specific examples of changes from .61-.64 that the scanners can fix.  Maybe someone else knows...

Just by memory it'll fix 100's of games but there are still about 20-30 you will need to download.

Now if I'm missing only one file out of the zip do I have to go back and download the whole rom again? What can I do? Thanks again..

Correct.  I have seen a program that allows you to download a specific file from a zip archive.  Can't post a link atm because my computer is still offline from upgrading parts.  Once I get the OS installed tonight I can go through my bookmarks and find a link if anyone needs.
