Title: TV vs Arcade Monitor
Post by: jprocess on January 20, 2003, 03:53:34 pm
Can anyone tell me the difference ( as far as hookup is concerned)  between using an arcade monitor and the monitor from a tv (without svid out) and what would you need for the tv hookup.

Thanks :)

Hmmm...lets see ;D.

TV suck.

tv gives you this image where the are things called "DOT crawling"

tv gives you the picture where color is mixed up(is it just me?)like green spots look greanish/blue.

tv has color bleeding problems which pretty much ruins the experience(my opinions ;))

you buy video card with TV out if you wanna use TV.

arcade monitors rule.
pure color(RED BLUE GREEN)
easy to mount in a cabinet.

I haven't had these TV problems that Snaaake has had. Very nice pix on a 25" RCA. Use an ATI TV-out card and connect the S-video cable to the TV. Windows doesn't look too good but the games look great. There's a web site out there that compares the quality.  I have not yet tried the arcade monitor, but I really can't see how it would be any great improvement over what I currently have.

Take a look at this site for some comparison of the images from an arcade monitor a TV and a computer monitor.

I must say I have an ATI with S-video out, and I know what Snaaake means.  Where there is a big area of red in particular, it all moves - horrible.  Sometimes it seems worse than others...most people don't seem to have a problem, but on my system it looks quite bad.  I even prefer my big PC monitor with -scanlines.

I guess an arcade monitor would really rock, I can't decide whether to spend out on one or stick with my PC screen tho  ???

u can drive a tv though the rbg scart in via the pcs vga port , the pic will be pretty good just hack up  a cable.
.this will be a masive improvement on svideo

arcade monitors look loads beter than svideo .
you just cant compare the 2 .
if u run windows on  arcade monitor it looks as clear as svga.

Agree on all your points. There are only two tiny little problems though:
1. Next to impossible to get a SCART tv in the US
2. If you get it, good luck powering up with 120v

OK well I am in the UK so all TV's have scart...

But what else do you need to do?  Surely it can't be as simple as hacking a cable or everyone would do it?

build a simple cable to hook up your PC to your TV.

e.g.
r => r
g => g
b => b
hsync => csync
vsync => csync

U will still need to get ur pc to output the right frequencies from you PC to TV (or arcade monitor) this is all done at the software end by running MAME with the -monitor parameter in arcade os.

or run the radeon/windows/powerstrip method i posted before.

or buy a diferent gfxs card

no one else does this for a few reasons.
1: this is  a USA site.
2: u will still need the same software set up as u would if you were going to use an arcade monitor ,so u might as well use an arcade monitor.
u can buy a used 25" arcade monitor for
