I know that there is a 2nd layer that rotates behind the first layer and (my guess) is that there are a series of lines that cross/intersect with lines on the outer layer which results in the issusion of movement.
But I haven't seen one of these 'in person' since I was a kid and I'm wondering exactly what does the 2nd layer look like and specifically how are the 2 layers laid out to create the effect.
Anybody?

Those things are a fire hazard. The inner layer rotates based on the heat produced by the bulb, meaning it is way too close to that bulb and the bulb is stronger than you would use in a light that size.

Sure sure. Blame the lamps. We all know you're a closet pyro. ;)

Maybeeeeeeee ;)
It's actually a concept I had for the marquee for my TikiCade project (a perpetual work in progress). The kitchy Tiki nature of my cab could really use something like this. A marquee with rolling waves is even better than my "flaming tiki idol" idea, IMO
I previously had a 'waterfall effect' in mind that would integrate real water flowing down the side of my cab, but this would probably be easier to maintain....
Just knocking around some ideas here in the ol' noggin :D
