Hot off my work email account.... Looks like the "occasional" BYOAC browsing during work hours will now be a thing of the past.
-
it sounds like u can surf BYOAC and then they will tell u if ur using to much bandwidth.
If your just browsing the forums u will be fine once all the images are cached in IE just keep out of the project annoucments cause the pics will suck the bandwidth but i think u will be ok :)
I browse this and other forums alot and we have like a 5gig plan and we don't get anywere neer it :) just be careful what links u open tho ;D
-
Project announcements is probably where I do the most browsing!
Ohh well, I knew the rules before I decided to log-on at work so if the crap hits the fan I have nobody to blame but myself....
-
http://www.the-cloak.com/login.html
they would see that you're using the cloak if that's a bad thing.
-
think its not where he's looking that they are worried about, just the amount of bandwidth he uses by looking.
-
It must be the cheesecake threads.
-
Forums use dick for bandwidth..
You "by yourself" arnt doing any huge bandwidth usage..
The thing about forums, its all just a few small images here and there, while they add up, they also "Cache" up.. Most of these forums when your browsing, is cached, the only thing new is the text..
:)
-
Yikes!
-S
-
id say you could browse these forums using minimum bandwith but thats your decision to risk it.
-
Just stay away from the cheesecake posts...
-
wow that much BYOAC surfing while at work.....
watch out Stingray I think he's after your slacker title....
-
I'm such a slacker that I don't even have a title. :)
-S
-
i want more than 3 stars
-
You must have to have a poopload of posts to get four. I've got more than double the number of posts that you have and I still only have three.
-S
-
i dont think its set up for anyone to get 4 stars, full members have 3 and admins/mods have 5. we should be able to get 4 at like 5k posts
-
I'm such a slacker that
-
Nobody ever listens to the little guys. ;)
-S
-
i love how we constantly derail threads and take them totally OT
-
I thought that was why "Everything Else" exists. I certainly don't expect any threads that I start to stay on topic for more than three or four posts. ;)
-S
-
Threads have topics???
huh
learn something new everyday :-\
-
The topic is whatever the person who posted before you had to say.
-S
-
Just doing my part in the "topic derailment team"
-
It's all part of the service we provide.

so yeah, i got really drunk friday night at a bar watching my friends band. and then walked to the diner 2 blocks down to get some food at 2am to get sober. all in all a good night, lol
-
At a diner at 2 A.M. alone sobering up is a good night???
Kids these days I tell you....
Bah when I was your age I had to sober up walking uphill with a blonde and a brunette under each shoulder. Now that was a good night......
-
no i wasnt alone, i was with my other guitar player in my band
-
Too bad Bones. I'm in the same situation here at work as well. Somehow my company has successfully blocked well over 80% of the internet, which includes this place.
At least I still get the news sites (yeah, I'm too cheap to buy a newspaper)
-
Yes, I understand how bandwidth can be a concern for the company. I'll give you the situation you face with BYOAC and then it can be taken from there
- The forum and main site use gzip compression. All text is compressed at least 90% on average.
- You can disable signatures and avatars from showing up through selections in your profile. This will limit the images downloaded.
- Depending on your browser, you can tell it to not download images form selective sites unless you permit it to. Thus, any attachment heavy threads (read cheesecake) will not hit you either.
- Ask if your company deploys content caching mechanism (forward proxy, etc) to reduce the amount of external bandwidth usage required. If they are spending 21k a month for bandwidth, and can't spend 3k up front to alleviate some of that, then they are just idiotic.
-
Don't be rippin on the cheesecake - you'll start a riot!

Not a rip at all, just a current example. I've rather enjoyed some of those posts. ;)
-
my $0.02 cents...
I don't think reading forums like these uses much bandwidth...
but if someone in your company listens to things thru the web...
radio, news, video,... streaming.... then they'll suck it up BIG TIME !!!...
but yeah... options like cache the page, automatically re-load page (will not re-load everything everytime you hit reload... and loading images, ... etc. that can take down the bandwidth...

I just told my secretary that she can browse the BYOAC forums all she wants.
-
Wow, she has the coolest boss in the world and she doesn't even appraciate it. ;)
-S
-
Yeah, considering she was at my house having a drink on a -paid- holiday Monday, while she was telling me she's thinking of going to work as an assistant for an agent at another Broker :-\
-
Maybe because her new boss won't make her come over to his house for "drinks" on her day off. ;)

A friend of mine works for the toll way. He says every month they get a memo listing everyone in their department, and what they use the internet for. One of the things on the list is "Adult Material". They do it to scare their employees, and it works, he no longer opens any email from me or his other friends because after he told us we kept filling his in box with "Adult Material".
When they first started doing this, a guy in his department had over 80% of his internet usage go to Adult Material.
Luckily I work for wonderful people who don't monitor what I look at or post.
I love my job and everyone I work for/with.
-
In August, the amount of data downloaded by browsing the internet was 240 Gigabytes (GB). Just to put that in context, 240GB would account for about 240,000 average visits to the Sydney Morning Herald Website.
This heavy usage cost the company just over $21,000 for the month of August.
Your company is getting charged $87 per Gig? Who is the freakin' retard in charge of securing your bandwidth?
A homeowner can download that much from Optimum Online (cable modem) for like $45/month. That's 50 DVDs. Admittedly quite a lot for a single person... but it could be done.... um.. not that I would know.
-
...Luckily I

she wants you to have sex with her and then give her a raise.
-
So the email kinda put the fear of god into me. I have a good job and I wouldn't loose it due to this, but there is no real point attracting attention to myself in a negative way.
Today I didn't click my little BYOAC icon once. Amazing how much more work I got done. Looks like I became a slacker and didn't even realise it.
Thanks for the suggestions and info on usage (and hiding usage), but best I continue on the "good" path I have decided upon. Besides, Gozur needs a chance to catch up.
Funny though. I can't go to www.arcadecontrols.com because it is restricted, but I can do a Google search and find a forum related post then click straight into the forum from there. Just a hint for any potential slackers that have tried and failed. ;)

You have the order mixed up there. The raise comes first.
You'll make a terrible boss for his secretary

In my email box first thing this morning. ::)
I recently sent out communication to the entire organisation regarding the
recent growth in Internet Usage.
This email is just to inform you that you are in the top 100 in terms of
the amount of data downloaded from the internet. As a I stated in my
previous email, I know much of the Internet usage is for valid business use
and it is not our intention to limit this in any way. However, I would
remind you that under the Computer Usage Policy "Personal use of the
Company's Internet resources must be kept to a minimum".
In order to manage down our costs, we will be monitoring usage and will be
informing heavy users on a monthly basis.
I would like to ask you all to carefully consider your usage of the
internet and help us to contain costs.
If you have any questions related to this, please feel free to contact me.
Thank you for your consideration
Regards,
******

only the Top 100??? Why if I were you I wouldn't stop until I was number 1..........
j/k
make that sucks. maybe the sent that letter to everyone to make them think that they were the cause so that everyone would stop.
corperate mind games
-
I forwarded the email to my manager with a simple comment, "You should be aware of this". He came and seen me and told me he also got one advising he was in the top 500.
It looks like it might be some type of automated email but to ignore it would be foolish.
-
Bummer. :(
