hi all i was just wundering what your greatest beatem up ever is? mine has to be streets of rage on the genesis/mega drive all of my youth was spent on this and although i completed it i cant even remember doing it :(
-
Nothing obscure or original, but it is a tie between Golden Axe and Final Fight. They both probably consumed an equal amount of quarters from my pockets.
-
tekken 2
or
soul calibur 2
-
Those are fighters, not beat em ups.
I'd say it's hard to beat the original Double Dragon.
-
i used to hate it when i used to press the wrong button and use my bomb u got one bomb and once its used thats it :( lol i am definately going to have to try and get this on my cab and also i used to enjoy the platform game called TOKI with the monkey :D
-
i have never played double dragon what console? or was it arcade only
-
:o :o
Dude, Double Dragon defined and propagated the whole beat 'em up genre.
It was a huge arcade hit and was on every platform (except TG16) with about 5 sequels.
-
ok what console was it best on and if it was on snes im gonna get it for my snes emu i think i have heared of it never played it though also u played streets of rage?
-
Streets of Rage was a Double Dragon clone.
The best version, of course, is the arcade. The only home version that I have ever spent real time with was the NES version.
-
I'm prolly one of the few that like it, but I have to say "Demolish Fist"
Its everything final fight was but with better boss', storyline, and graphics

River City Ransom on NES. So Good!
-
i gotta give a few of these a blast they sound kool
-
I don't think I ever played Double Dragon either, for whatever that's worth.

I would also Try RCR (river city Ransom) what he said above^ one of the greatest + oldest sidescrollers And FAST ACTION too...
-
i just looked at my roms and found that i have double dragon 2 and 5 on the snes :)

damn, thats not what im thinking of... >.<

what?
-
Heres another vote for Kung-Fu Master.
I don't know why but for some reason I've always preffered the NES version aka KungFu over the arcade. The crappier graphics just seem more appealing for this game.

Agreed, I love the horrid sound effects in that game. *BOING!* WAHH AHH HAA AHH!
I enjoyed Captain Commando in the Arcades (BABY IN A MECHA SUIT! HiYAH!)
I've never played but have always heard good things about Beats of Rage - a PC freeware that is a sort of update of Streets of Rage. You may want to check that out.

I played Double Dragon so much I could go through the entire game on one quarter. I played alot of Golden axe and TMNT too.

Shoot...
Forgot about TMNT.
That and The Simpsons got some mega play from me as well.
I still stand by my Final Fight and Golden Axe initial post, but there are definitely a lot of great beat-em-ups on my list of arcade favorites. They were the golden genre when I was hitting my arcade prime. :)
-
eah, the beat em ups were my re-birth into arcade games. I was a child of the 80's and fell out of arcades about mid 80's, but the late 80's early 90's games brought me back.
beat em ups and fighters
-
ooo yer tmnt was classic too
-
I LOVED Double Dragon. That was the game that truly got me into arcades. It was the only arcade game my dad would actually play with me. We beat if many times. I actually have a double dragon 2 in storage thats in a terrible stargate conversion cabinet.
I also spent a lot of time and money on X-Men and both Ninja Turtles games.
-
B. Rap Boys
-
I played lots of SOR and DD primarily on consoles (I was a tempest / defender / galaga / shinobi guy in the arcades). I now play lots of Beats of Rage which I think is an absolute gem.

Duuuude, dont you know it! C&D is probably my favourite game of any genre. Ive got my cab set up to run it as soon as fires up. C&D rocks!!! 8) :D
-
Final Fight's probably my fave...the huge characters and 'Haggar' were great :)
Golden Axe is cool too, played a lot of the Genesis version (good port). Golden Axe 2 on the Genesis is good too...practically the same but with different levels.
Edit: This is one genre of game which has never really been decently done in 3d. Shame but I don't think you could top the 2d ones anway.
-
double dragon is for me the best beat em up ever !!!!!!
i even bought the original cab :)
-
Streets of Rage was a Double Dragon clone.
If "Streets of Rage" was a "Double Dragon clone" then a Lamborghini Murcielago is a Toyota Camry clone.
Double Dragon didn't have:
1) Team up moves (throw your partner as a projectile)
2) multi-move "specials" (not just one)
3) Trade-life-for-invulnerability specials (Final Fight did, but only 1 special per char)
4) make-your-own combos (try chaining a 2-hit jump kick move in a standing combo in DD!).
Just because two games are of the same genre doesn't make them clones. Tekken is not a Street Fighter clone. Daytona is not a Pit Stop clone. They are the same genre, but light years apart in terms of gameplay.
IMHO, Streets of Rage II was the best beat 'em up of all time. It had more moves, better characters (user-playabe and enemies) and a wider variety of weapons use than any other game. SoR came a close second. The third was just a rehash, and not worth more than 1 or 2 plays for novelty value. I know plenty of people who scoff at SoR for being console-only, but it's the perfect example of superior gameplay over flashy graphics and bling-factor.
Final Fight and Double Dragon are absolutely without a doubt classics in the genre. But neither had the depth of gameplay to the SoR family. They are too simplistic in comparison. That's fine if you like simple games, but I find them tiring after one play. Having mastered all the techniques of a game in the first level, there's nothing more to do. SoR2 gives you mutliple characters all with a HUGE range of moves for a side-scrolling beat'em'up.
TMNT to me was a gimmick. The hit detection sucked, and gameplay was missing completely. The only thing that made it fun to play was the TMNT branding. Likewise for "Simpsons" which was the same game with different sprites.
Just my 2 cents. My old MegaDrive (Genesis for the US audience) still gets SoR2 play today, over 12 years later (I bought the game only days after official release). I can't say the same for any other beat'em'up I've ever played.
-
Well I like Streets of Rage 1/2 as well. I think the music tops them off (boss music in the first one is great). But I still probably prefer Final Fight overall. Then again, I had the Amstrad version's awesome graphics to be in awe of:
-
Blah blah, same graphics, same gameplay, a few new moves and additions. That's about it. Without Double Dragon you never get Streets of Rage.
-
I always viewed SOR as an evolutionary step over DD. I agree with elvis that in the end, SOR2 remains one of the most playable for the reasons he's outlined. I tells ya, BOR satisfies in that space. To me, it's SOR4.
And I also agree that TMNT and the Simpons were not the best games. They get really boring very quickly. I'd rather play Golden Axe or something similar.

Same here. I remember seeing a dedicated Simpsons in the arcade I used to go in. I never once even played on it, didn't appeal one bit.
Final Fight in a jamma cab opposite it was another matter tho :)
-
River City Ransom is my all time favorite (NES or the remake on the Game Boy Advance).
I also liked Dynamite Cop for the Dreamcast/Arcade...
-baker
-
The arcade version of Renegade... Without Renegade you wouldn't have Double Dragon. I used to love Double Dragon, and recently discovered Renegade. For me, playing Renegade was just like playing Double Dragon, only it was fresh and new, and I had to figure out all the tricks to get through the game. Fantastic. Tough game (unlike Double Dragon). Try it.
-
Double Dragon was definitely a quarter sucker era game. Never gets all that hard, making you think you can beat it... if you put in fifty more cents. An hour later you're still thinking that.
-
I always liked Vigilante... although i think i played it alot more on Master System than in the arcade.
DD Golden Axe and Final Fight were definatly the favorites tho..
-
got SOR 1 2 amd 3 roms here but before i play i will need some sleep or the excitement will kill me. ;D To be honest this is one of the only retro games i truly enjoy
-
not at work tomorrow so allday would be nice
-
The Dungeon & Dragons games are pretty good beat em ups.
-

Truly spoken like someone who never took the time to play the game and learn the strategies. You've proven that with the "same gameplay" remark. They are very, VERY different.
There's one in every crowd, and for every game genre who thinks the same, it seems.
And for the record, there are plenty of scrolling beat 'em ups BEFORE Double Dragon. It was hardly the start of a genre.
-
its 7am here in the uk i have been awaiken by the silent cry of SOR

Well don't just stand there... play the game! It's good for your soul. ;D

Try Cadillacs and Dinosaurs (Dino) and let me know what you think. Im also a lover of DD, SoR and Final Fight but Cad's and Dino's is the one that does it for me! Its easily the arcade game that swallowed most of my hard earned 20p's!
-

I enjoy Cad's & Dino's (& all Capcom's scrolling fighters) but not as much as Final Fight. Alien vs Predator is worth a play too.
-
yer was playing avp yesterday found it rather enjoyable im from uk was cadillacs and dinosaurs out in uk? i have never heared of it
-

Ooooh, how could I forget! Good choice sir!
yer was playing avp yesterday found it rather enjoyable im from uk was cadillacs and dinosaurs out in uk? i have never heared of it
The only place I ever played it was when I was on holiday with my parents in cornwall, they had some other decent oldschool (to me) games like Hard Drivin' (the sitdown version), Dungeons and Dragons, Hang On, Operation Wolf, Sunset Riders, Ivan Ironmans to name but a few, happy days! :) :'(
-
I stand by my remarks. You don't have to agree, but it is not valid to say a differing opinion is wrong.
That's just super. I'm not saying that your private opinion on which game is better is wrong. Each to their own, mate. Play the games you like and stay happy, because that's what it's all about.
What I am saying is that statements like "DD and SoR have the same gameplay" are wrong. The two play nothing alike. The only commonality is the fact that they are side-scrolling beat 'em ups. Again, it's like you telling me Space Invaders and DoDonPachi have "the same gameplay". Not so.
Back on topic: good call on Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, and AvP. Two more great games.
Why don't we start a "crap game" section? Try having a few rounds of "Renegade" and see if you aren't falling asleep. :)
-
i dont think they have the same gameplay i love streets of rage but not so much dd but if sor was a clone surely i would like em both?
-
SoR is more along a Final Fight Clone than a Double Dragon clone. They just happen to be in the same genre.
No need to fight about it.
-
There is specific need to fight about it.
I will continue to fight, walk to the right, and fight some more until my opinion on Beat Em Ups is respected.

I was just thinking the same thing. But who's "moves" are better and which of you was first? I'm betting you don't have the combo or team moves that the SOR guys have! ;D
-pmc
-
No, but I swing a mighty fine bat and have better sideart.
-
I'm going to go with Double Dragon 1 and 2, TMNT, and Battletoads.
dd1&2 because I own them :) I prefer the dd1 controls, but like the dd2 gameplay.
TMNT because the level design was pretty good. Interactive environments, each level had something different in terms of traps. Though the NES version had more (interesting) levels than the arcade.
Battletoads is mixes it up too, and with humor. Plus you gotta love giving foes the big boot, kicking them towards the screen.
-
I honestly have never played the Arcade version of Battletoads. I loved the NES game although it felt a little cheap in comparison to the almighty ninja turtles. ;)
-
I can't believe nobody's mentioned X-Men: Children of the Atom. That game rocks. Double Dragon was great for it's time, so was SOR, why the argument? They both have the cheapo kick-punch at the same time to throw the elbow-of-death (or was it jump-punch?). The best part about SOR was the music. Man that was killer for it's time.
What are the Dungeons And Dragons ones someone mentioned? I'm not familiar.
-
X-Men: Children of the Atom is a fighter like Street Fighter. You are thinking of the X-Men side scroller which has already been mentioned.
The D&D games are really fun. They mix RPG elements into standard side scrolling killem up gameplay.
Yeah Double Dragon used the Jump and Punch to perform the elbow. Alas, DD2 and 3 were never the same again. 3 was horrid. 2 was passable but hated the control scheme. It was a better overall game minus controls.
-
Nothing beats the grab by the hair 4 knee to the face throw over your shoulder combo.
-
Nothing beats the grab by the hair 4 knee to the face throw over your shoulder combo.
I can think of one thing:
The grab by the hair 4 knee to the face throw over your shoulder and off a cliff combo.
-
And the hurricane kick.
-

You are correct. I defer to your combo.
-
I quite enjoyed the SNES "Super Double Dragon". Not that I played it very often, mind you. So it might be still in "novelty phase" in my brain.
Overall my favourite non-arcade port of Double Dragon was to the Amiga. I owned the Master System copy also, but the Amiga had better graphics.
Still, all of them combined don't equal one tenth the play time of SoR in my household. :P
-
Final Fight of course. Oh and 'Bad Dudes' for the NES. ;)
-
well for me its got to be tekken 1,2,3,tag and the virtua fighter series oh and soul calibur 8)
-

The discussion is on beat em ups not fighters. But good games just the same
-
This thread inspired me to go back and play a couple of these. I found DD to be just like I remembered it. I didn't like it much and definiately prefer SOR. I never played Cadillacs and Dinosaurs before I found it to be pretty damn weird. The one I stumbled on and really enjoyed playing was Bad Dudes which is soooo 80s! then I dropped it all and played an hour of Reactor. ;)

I love the entire Genre... Each game series has it's charms... But, does anyone find it strange that Double Dragon just became something else? Am I the only one who played the 6th one which is just a fighting game? Not Double Dragon the Movie... The one that playmore came out with about 2 years ago? And please don't bash on the TMNT arcade series, as poor as the collision detection was... Double Dragon as well as Streets of Rage... Only two players.TMNT gave that push towards the four player standard(That up until recently Sony refused to recognize)
I wanna try that Rumble Fish game out. They had it in the arcade around the corner from me for like 2 weeks. but I never got a chance to try it.
-
Am I the only one who played the 6th one which is just a fighting game?
There have been 3 Double Dragon "fighting" games (ie: 1-on-1 fighting, not brawler/beat-em-up style) that I can recall.
1) Double Dragon 5: The Shadow Falls (SNES - 1994)
http://www.classicgaming.com/doubledragon/rddvsnes.htm
2) Double Dragon (Neo Geo - 1995)
http://www.classicgaming.com/doubledragon/rddneo.htm
3) Rage of the Dragons (Neo Geo - 2002)
http://www.classicgaming.com/doubledragon/rrotd.htm
I'd say my favourite of the 3 was the middle one, as it was a touch more "Street Fighter" ish. The SNES one was too slow, and RotD was very King of Fighters (which I don't like).
But anyways... none of them are Beat 'em Ups, and thus not on topic. So I'll shush now. :)
-
Double Dragon. The Elbow owz all!
-
...hmmm I always liked Sunset Riders for some reason, followed by TMNT and Final Fight.
It's funny, I remember very vividly being in my college arcade playing TMNT doing really great....and then my girlfriend found me. I was basically given the choice of finishing my game or taking advantage of her ......I hate to admit I actually hesitated and considered finishing the game (she was pretty hot and 19)....but I was doing so freakin' well in the game!.....
.....just so you all know, I left the game.....
MameMaster!
-
no man lol if the girl doesnt let you finish the game she doesnt respect you enough :P
-
She has a better control panel and much better force feedback.
-
lol ;D
-
I don't think I ever played Double Dragon either, for whatever that's worth.
-S
:o
Double Dragon rocks..... My boy loves playing it too. got it on nes now, I'm pretty sure back in the day I had it for my c-64.
Edit: after further thought into this I am now thinking that it was Renegade that I had payed on my c-64 :-\
In that case Renegade also rates up there in my book......
;D
