Today's Starburst auction was interesting ... first time I have ever seen a true, dedicated classic there.
I walked in to find an Asteroids right by the registration desk. Needless to say, I got my bid ticket immediately (#2).
Met up with some of the CGCC crew and proceeded immediately to check the Asteroids out. Plugged it in and nothing. Played with the switches in the back and nothing. Ah well.
Moved on to the Astro City cab nearby, plugged it in and nothing.
Moved the extension cord to another outlet and the Astro City cab fired up. Plugged in the Asteroids, held my breath and ... pure vector beauty. Coined it up and played a bit. Then someone fidgeted with the extension cord, power surged and nothing.
Rolled up the extension cord and moved quietly away, believing that we blew a fuse.
Eventually, the auctioneer made his way to the Asteroids, they tried to power it up and failed ... early bidding was fast and furious ... when the smoke cleared, I saw that it was my bidding card held high in the air.
I sure hope that it is just a blown fuse. I'll find out Monday when I pick it up.
I also picked up a lot labelled "Countertop Hardware" ... figured I would bid the minimum and if I got it, then great. As soon as the lot was called, I thrust my card in the air. Turns out I was the second bidder, so ended up paying $50 for it. I wasn't entirely thrilled, but what the heck ?
When I got home, I put a spare Golden Tee board in (countertop was wired JAMMA) and nothing. No big surprise. Have a closer look, adjust the monitor settings (they were all cranked) and the power supply and ... working countertop JAMMA cab. Going to need a cap kit, but everything works (and it is all leaf).
And then I found the working bootleg Team Tetris board stuck in the bottom.

Got to meet Scott84, who I hope got a handle on the way things work (unfortunately, The Kid arrived just in time to bid up the NeoGeos at the end).
All told a pretty good day.
Cheers
EDIT: Oh yeah, next auction November 5 ... will update the MeetUp Thread (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=41981.0)

Haha.
Im glad i got to meet you and others....
Nice to see that you guys were regular and not some spooky guys like the news portrays when you meet people through the net.
The NEO GEO was alas not mine. But i found out an interesting tidbit.
The Kid was saying that he actually sees the auction lots before and only comes later in the auction if thats all thats good.
My friend got a sweet Arkanoid. Works perfectly. Just needs some buffering on the panel to get the 'f word' out of it was scratched in it.
I have already booked off work for the next auction.
Next time im gonna be armed and ready. :P

how much was the asteroids?
C$500 ... my absolute max (didn't bring any more cash since I bought 3 machines there 6 weeks ago).
Screen had some burn. Cardboard bezel has operator stickers on it. And I really hope we just blew a fuse or two.
Cheers.

Well, I got Asteroids home, replaced some fuses and rewired the plug and all is well in vectorland.

My first machine was a Near Mint Asteroids deluxe, except for a scratch on the sideart, MINT.
Bought it for $150 in 1992 maybe.
Sold in in 1995 for $225 :'(
Deluxe wasn't my cup of tea exactly, preferred the original, but I'd take it back now.

A quick update for posterity ... and is case someone searches the board for vertical collapse on an Asteroids machine.
A bit over a week ago, video on my Asteroids was reduced to a single horizontal line. Played fine, only in one dimension.
Did a bunch of research, including a lot of info from SirPoonga's "My Asteroids" thread -- lotsa good info there (thanks SirP and CT!)

Got my parts list all set to go.
Today I found myself jonesing for a real game of Asteroids (it just isn't the same with a joystick on MAME), so I pulled out my soldering iron, the deflector board and a couple of pints of Guinness and sat down to reflow the deflector board (was originally going to wait for the cap kit to arrive).
Lo and behold, Asteroids is back in 2 dimensions!
Just thought I would add this to the thread because I learned so much from SirP's thread and this may help somebody someday ... or maybe I am just a post whore ...
Cheers.
