Title: Quick but good MAME cab
Post by: ChadTower on September 26, 2005, 01:48:59 pm

A friend of mine asked me to make him a MAME cab, saying he'll buy it when I'm done.  I believe he will, and I have an extra Dynamo cab in good shape sitting around.

So, here is my new project, started this weekend.  The initial cab:

I can't stand POW, and it is just another side scrolling beat em up JAMMA game.  Not even that good of a game.  So, I'm stripping the cab clean, painting it black, new T molding, some generic multicab artwork, and it will have a new life as a mame cab in my friend's basement.  I have one side completely stripped and the other side half stripped.  Pics will come.

Looks like that will be a fun project. Are you keeping the orginal control panel or are you going to make a new custom one?

Same CP.  I replace the two sticks with a pair of switchable 4/8 ways, or else may just add a 4 way in the middle.  I'm not sure yet.

I'm pretty sure I'm going with this artwork (http://www.classicarcadegrafix.com/sunshop/index.php/action/item/id/400/prevaction/category/previd/5/prevstart/0/) and the matching marquee etc.

I started with two 4/8 way joysticks. Later I then added a dedicated 4 way  in the center and left the others 8 way. I felt that for fighting games and such that playing on one side was fine but for classics you got to be in the middle.

A valid point... I may go that way, though I'd have to buy a sheet metal stamp.

Don't forget to piss on the board when you pull it.

Nice cab, however I call those CP's the carpal tunnel CP's!  Too slanted for my taste.  Good luck!

No way, it's a WWF Superstars in there now.   :)

Note:  the monitor in there is a WGk7000 series.  I'm toying with the idea of putting a brand new chassis in there for reliability.

What!  You don't want me to build a POW cockpit?

My NEO-GEO lives in the same type of cab. Good luck with the project.

Does it?  I have an MVS 1 slot about 15 feet from this one.  It looks very similar, but it's not in fact a generic Dynamo.  The OEM domestic MVS cab looks very similar.

You are going to at least sell the artwork?  There's probably someone looking for it even though it isn't a great game.  I've been looking for artwork for my double dragon II dynamo for several years.

You can't save the artwork.  It is pretty much trashed during the removal process.

Well, yeah, the cp and sideart are glued on.  But the bezel and marquee...

Oh, those two will be saved.  They'll be put on a shelf or popped onto ebay or something.  The monitor bezel I may just give away in the free items thread, or keep in the short term since if you turn it around it's just a plain black bezel.

No, I got that POW at a yard sale for $75.  Some guy had bought it for his sons, they grew up, it was dumped in the back of the garage and had sat there for years.

Spent about a half hour tonight removing black vinyl.  I'm 90% done now.

If it was a double draogn II with a mint white cpo I would have offered to trade entire control panels with you:)

Erm, and if it were a Tempest, I wouldn't be changing it at all?   ???

Heh, but Double Dragon II is also a dynamo cab :)  My point was there might be someone who needs the control panel too, not just bezel and marquee.  Though it sounds like it is too late :(

Hey, could you do me a favor?  My Double Dragon II is in storage (at my parent's place 2 hours away).  If you get a chance can you get me neough measurments to be able to reproduce the cabinet on a 3D cad program?

Tell me what to measure and I can do that.

The CP is untouched so far, but I don't really have much desire to spend 6 months seeking out someone who wants a POW CP and has a blank one to trade.

Speaking of Double Dragon 2 (sorry to sway the thread a lil bit) I saw this on ebay earlier, Very nice shape minus a pushbutton our two.

Definitely the same cabinet as yours Chad, im sure yours will look similar our just as nice.

Ebay Double Dragon 2 Auction (http://cgi.ebay.com/DOUBLE-DRAGON-II-THE-REVENGE-ARCADE-GAME-COOL_W0QQitemZ6213204327QQcategoryZ13716QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

I have no planned use for it.

Anyone know of a fair price for this guy?

Wise man say:  $10 + shipping for the POW marquee.

Want it?

Question:

The glue on this thing is really even.  It's a little bumpy, but not much.  I'm tempted to just sand it even and then prime over it, rather than going through a lengthy stripping process.

Is that viable?

On a Dynamo cab, if it was me, I'd just sand it and paint it. It's not like you're restoring a dedicated Tempest or anything. It's Dynamo, the king of low buck conversion cabs!  ;D

Project on hold, the buyer is now balking at a reasonable price, saying I told him I could build him a custom MAME cab for $400.

Sorry, man, the parts alone cost that much.

Time to resurrect this.  Not for sale, but for my own use.  My wife wants to play some ms pac.

So, got my hands on a Suzo Inductive joystick that arrived in the mail yesterday.  Looks good, anxious to try it out.

Also, since I won't have time to fix the monitor, brought the chassis in to a repair guy.  That should be back in my possession in a few days at the most.

I think you scared NullBoy away when you posted a $ sign. If you change it to "free" I'm sure he'll return in a jiffy. ::)

Well, the chassis turned out to have a cracked transformer... so I replaced it with a working one.  Still have to plug it in and see how it looks with my tube.

Did you drop it when you removed it the first time or something?
Title: Re: Quick but good MAME cab
Post by: ChadTower on April 03, 2006, 07:51:59 am

No... the transformer's crack was tiny, never would have seen it without a magnifying glass... still worked a bit until it heated up and expanded some, then would blow the drive transistor.  Happened three times while the guy was trying to fix it.

Yes! I know exactly where your coming from. 9 times out of 10, when I show off my cabinet they ask me how much it would cost for them to get one. I've pretty much made a sport out of it.... Once I tell them how much is wrapped up in it, I can see the hope drain from their eyes. Many people I have showed it to said they would buy one, but what I've learned is "I'd buy one of these" really means "I'd buy one for $250 or less". Around a couple hundred seems to be the sweet spot for a standup arcade game. Sorry he balked.

Yeah. Unfortunately, I usually spend twice that on just my monitors alone. ^_^;
