Title: Trigun Themed Arcade Machine
Post by: gsoul on September 21, 2005, 07:22:48 pm
Okay, just announcing my first arcade project!

My concept is an arcade machine based on the Trigun anime. I'm going to be building the cabinet based on the plans for the Simpsons Cabinet. The cabinet plans are available at http://www.jakobud.com. Thanks Jake! I'll definitely send you the pics when its done!

Being a graphic designer/Web Designer, I thought I'd start with the artwork. So heres my initial concepts. I've just finished vectorising all the characters with Adobe Illustrator. Trust me, that was a SERIOUSLY time consuming job!!

Okay, heres the art!

Control Panel - Yeah, I know theres only two players and six buttons each. :)

For me the CP isnt about how many different controls I can fit on. I dont particularly like the old/old arcade games, so I dont need spinners or 4way controls or trackballs. I was a child of the 80's, so I'm really only interested in 1986 onwards. :) With the theme, this cabinet is DEFINTITELY going to have a light gun!

Side Art - Its Vash the Stampede in all his glory.

Marquee

I havent finished this yet, but its basically going to be the Trigun logo from the front of the DVD's with one of the characters. I'll post it when its ready.

Heres some highres images of the characters.

Vash - http://www.coinop.com.au/BYOAC/vash.jpg
Wolfwood - http://www.coinop.com.au/BYOAC/wolfwood.jpg

Anyways, I've got everything I need so I'm starting construction this weekend!

So far I have

2x T-stick from Ultimarc
12x Red Buttons with Honeywell microswitches
2x white buttons
2x white player buttons
3x 2400x1800 18mm MDF sheets
A PC up the the task!
A router
A drill
A circular Saw
Inspiration!

Since I have a 27" arcade monitor from an old machine I have, I'm going to use that along with the brand new Jamma Harness I bought for my other machine. I have an Ultimarc J-Pac for the keyboard encoding / video signal boosting and an ArcadeVGA card to convert the signal to 15hz.

Anyways, I'll be sure to post every step of the journey for all to see!

I'm happy to offer my services to anyone who wants character vectoring / designing done.

Although the Anime bored me to sleep I must say your plans look great. I hope the finished project looks as nice.

hence the reason you fell asleep.  ;)  As a whole the series rocks and at one point a potential candidate for my still vapor project.  Good work on the artwork.  I would suggest some mock bullet holes though.  They are prevalent in the series and would add to the detail.

The art looks great.  I like the bullet holes suggestion, might spice up the side are a little.  Is the lettering a font, or is that from the Anime artwork?

It looks like the Trigun font that I found a couple years ago.  Its too uniform IMHO.  But it suits the design and only hardcore Trigun fans will even notice it.

Maybe I should do a Cowboy Bebop inspired cab...

Yeah.. I totally agree on the bullet holes.. :) I'll add some and see how it pans out.

In all absolute honesty: "BEST....CAB....EVER!". O wow. I agree, simple controls make a dreamy cab, not covering it all up. Awesome panel, awesome sideart. You must hack lightguns into some vash and wolfwood gun reproductions. I am an instant fan of this one. Please post more!

What system is that gun for?

Its a PS2 Guncon2 gun. Hence it works perfectly in Mame on my PC. I bought a really cheap and nasty one from the local $2 shop and downloaded the drivers from http://xoomer.virgilio.it/smogdragon/ it worked like a charm. Point Blank ROCKS. Anyways, if this one is Guncon2 compatible, it'll be PERFECT.

Okay.. started construction on the weekend. Firstly I printed out a full size colour copy of my control panel and used it to measure up the cuts. I'll get some photos out when I get home.

While we're waiting for those, I finished designing the MameWah interface for the cabinet.

I also modified the examples in the first post to add the bullet holes that everyone wanted.

The only additional comment I will make...  side art needs the bullet holes too.  ;)  It really adds to the whole authenticity of the product.  Thats gonna be one fine looking machine.

I agree, maybe just a line of bullet holes underlining 'TRIGUN' on the sideart

Maybe I should do a Cowboy Bebop inspired cab...
I've been wanting to do something like that....unfortunately finding good pics/screen caps of Vicious, Julia, the old men, the big shot show hosts, or laughing bull is tough :(
I wouldn't want just the bebop crew, gotta havee all the characters that make that show good :)

I could see one side of the cabinet being the bebop crew, the other side being the other characters.  The CP rain puddles and roses, the bezel broken stained glass :)

Marquee could be comprised of the ships...

Anyway.  I don't like the bullet holes as shown, they look too fake.
Maybe you could have a seperate artwork for each side, put Wolfwood with his Cross Punisher.
And those two poses of vash and wolfwood are on everything.

If you look for character fan sites you can find many scans or screen caps, such as

A Full Metal Alchemist theme could be inspiring as well.  I look forward to seeing this project progress!

Anything new on this one? Still interested. Where did you get the pics for your front end?

As much as something like this or a Hellsing cab would own (or a Hellsing car paint job!), the only downer is that there are few good anime games. Unless you have a very new console and play imported naruto and bleach games I guess.
