Title: Modular - Durability of artwork issues?
Post by: Crazy Cooter on August 20, 2005, 07:35:40 pm
I was thinking about modular panels (Docs specifically), and was wondering how well the vinyl or whatever other artwork holds up.  Does the edge of the modular piece "peel up" from hands sliding over it?  It seems like it would from people dragging their hands over the seams.  Maybe everyone is wrapping the artwork around the sides?

Or does the stuff have enough "stick" that it doesn't matter?

I have vinyl on my modular panels but not "artwork".  The Happs pica vinyl has stayed on and not peeled at all in almost 2 years now.  I think this is the same stuff used on real arcade games so it's built to take a beating.  I wish I had artwork on mine but I just haven't got around to doing it.  It would be a rather large undertaking (and probably an expensive one too).  Someday.....     :-\

Did you just stick an oversize chunk on the module and then go around it with a razor to apply the vinyl?  I'm worried about it being rubbed and then roll over and curl like a sticker does.

Yep, just put a slightly larger peice over and used an exacto knife to trim it.  I have had zero rolling or peeling in over 2 years.  The adhesive is *extremely* strong.  There have been times I've needed to take it off and it was very difficult.

Cooter,
The black vinyl from parts express on my panels have been there for about 1.5 years now.  So far I've only had one panel I had to replace the vinyl on -  but that is because a visiting teenager actually intentionally peeled a large piece off the panel (don't ask).

The stuff is very thick and sticks very well.  I did staple mine on the bottom side to keep it from lifting at the ends and that has held it in place quite well.

Cheers!

Good to hear.  I won't worry about it then.

I'm planning to paint mine black, and then put thin Lexan overlays on them similar to what would be on most Williams cabinets.
My plan is to leave about 1/8" in from the edges on each module.

I had similar artwork on my swappable panels, and didn't have any problems with it.
