First NFL preseason game, Colts-Falcons, at 5am tomorrow morning.  Anyone else going to watch?

Not really a football fan. I'll tell you one thing though, the Giants will forever be associated with strawberry speedbags in my rather dark & twisted mind.

I live and breath football through the fall and winter.  I watch about ten hours of football on Sundays, play semipro myself... just hope my body can hold up this year, it seems to be getting old.

Until you've gotten the proper amount of "beatin".  Thus far, your hair seems to be a light shade of pink.  When you get to red-headed-stepchild coloring, you'll be done.

Look at your strawberry speedbags to get an idea of the shade of beatin' you'll need.

.....OUCH!  beatin'.....strawberry speedbags......tommy, don't interpret this as me trying to hit ON you, that's Stingray's job ;) ;)

Hit you, hit on you, it's all a matter of how you like your beatings.

This ain't gunna go down well but I will speak my mind.

About 10 years ago we had some American gridiron team visit Australia and play a couple of games. Having never seen the game before I got me some tickets to go check it out. I was pretty excited!

It was soooooooo slow. The clock doesn't stop here in our football between plays. You get 80 minutes to go hard and win. The game I seen just went on & on. Sure I don't understand the game so there was likely factors I couldn't appreciate but geeze, this thing went for hours and most of the time nothing was happenning.

About 3 and a half hours on average.  Your football is pretty straightforward, either soccer or rugby.  The rules are also different, so the games don't really compare.  I enjoy watching rugby, but can't stand soccer - similar to your statement, soccer seems to go on and on with nothing really happening (to me, anyway).  It's the same with hockey, although I relish hockey.  To me, it's a combination of soccer and football.  On ice skates!  Hockey is the same way.  If you don't understand the rules, until you DO, it's just a bunch of mindlessly "losing" the puck and guys hitting each other and someone gets "lucky" once in a while and the black thing goes in the goal for them.

It is said that there are 20 minutes of actual "action" in a three hour game of Gridiron Football (I prefer the Australian "Gridiron" description over the pretentious "American" description when discussing the game with people not from the U.S.).  So I'm not surprised that, without a proper understanding of the nuances of the game, you found it quite boring.

But once the nuances are understood...what a sport!

Think of Gridiron football as a turn based strategy game--take your turn, when the turn is over you ponder your next move for a few minutes, take the next turn, etc. etc.  Your football is more like real time strategy--have to think more "on the fly" & be more flexible, at the expense of some "cerebral" aspects.

And if you think our football is slow...don't watch our baseball!

 ;)

Yep, that's American football. Now Rugby on the other hand is great fun to watch. Sadly we don't get it on TV much here.

Football players are smart enough to play in such away that doesn't mutilate our faces.  Rugby players are all messed up, like old boxers.

I think the football Bones is speaking about is Aussie Rules Football, which is different to soccer (also known as football in most countries around the world), rugby league and rugby union.  I have never seen a game of gridiron so can't comment, but soccer is very frustrating - all that time for one or two scoring shots.

Soccer <> football in Australia.
Football=Aussie rules or Rugby League.

cdbrown is correct in his assumption.

Maybe you forgot to get snot slingin' drunk. That helps speed things up a lot.
I can have a game on while I'm doing something else, but I fall asleep before halftime if I just try to sit there and watch it.

It wouldn't have the audience it has if it wasn't a good game. I personally don't understand the game which makes it difficult to appreciate.

I like motorsport and many people think that is boring without understanding the finer points.

I understand motorsports plenty.  You throw the rocks at the guys on the small motors with pretending-to-be-motorcycle parts surrounding the motor.

Not too hard to grasp, if you ask me.
