Title: Rockola 469, free
Post by: ChadTower on July 22, 2005, 08:38:28 am

Just checked out a free Rockola 469... it was in damn good shape.  I didn't take it, it was outside of a house by mine with a free sign on it.  I don't have a suitable vehicle for moving it... bah.

Drat, that kind of thing never happens to me, and I do have a vehicle I can haul it in.

If it's still there when I leave work, I have a friend who's going to come get it.  I doubt it will be, though.

If it were a cab or a pin, I'd have put it on a cart and walked it home (1.5 miles)... but I don't have real use for a 45 juke when I could build an mp3 juke that is a fraction of the size.

Before I ever got into the MAME thing, there was a house that was thowing away three cabs 1/4 mile away. Gorf, Joust, and Defender. Looking back, I don't know how I let them go.

It was still there.  And now it's with me.  Chad did a fantastic job of standing next to it for 45 minutes in some hot weather until I was able to get there to haul it away.

Yep... it's safe and sound and in ClubNinja's basement.  I spoke with the owner who told me it does work, just needs some love to make it operate smoothly.  I bet if you guys asked nicely ClubNinja would be willing to share some photos.

*grumble grumble*

Not that I need such a thing (I have no room for it) but I just got done rebuilding an NSM 120 at work.  It's full of 45 goodness.  Really old school.

Glad someone here was able to rescue it. I'd like to see those pics that  Chad referenced. I'd like to hear about yours too Peale.

Fixed up inside (minor stuff), cleaned, and loaded with the good stuff (Journey, Def Leppard, Survivor, Bon Jovi, etc 80s awesomeness):

Awesome.  Tell us what you did to it.

I've done a few since then.  I totally forgot about this thread.

I said 'rebuilt' but more specifically I should have said 'restored'.  It had been in a bar for a number of years without general cleaning.  As such it had many layers of smoke on it, and tons of dust/dirt in the subwoofer section, as well as the speaker section.

Removed the grills and disassembled, sanded down, primed and painted with gloss black paint.  Hindsight: should have done *both* sides, as you could see the white paint from the other side if you looked at a certain angle.

While they're off, clean out the speaker sections.  Get the mirror backing cleaned to it's former shiny glory.

Spray with 409 and scrub, scrub, scrub!  Wipe it off and repeat until it's clean.

Do the same thing to the inside of the cabinet.  Much easier, though; it's not textured.  It pretty much just wipes off.

Don't use glass cleaner on the insides of the glass, use Novus 1.  It coats the glass slightly, and repels dust longer.

Then a selection of snazzy records, of course.

Man, you've got a little stiffy over this.  Most of my mp3s are ripped myself, actually.  Not out of some overblown IP respect, though.  It's pretty much because I haven't wanted any stuff that's been released in quite some time and can't be bothered to download much.

As I've said many times, I don't really care about the people who download quietly.  It's the people who ---smurfette--- and moan and stomp about morality and entitlement that tick me off.

Fair enough, let's not muck up ClubNinja's thread of free Rockola awesomeness.

On the subject of jukeboxes. All the pre-CD jukes that I remembr seeing used 45s. Were there ever any that used LPs? I'd love to be able to put my dusty vinyl collection back to good use.

It would have to be a much bigger juke than this one, that's for sure.  I can't imagine there were many that used 33s.  You'd either have to make it intelligent enough to pick out a track or sell a whole album at a time.

Oh well, I was asking more out of curiosity anyway. I don't know that I'd have room for a juke in my house anyway.

Actually, there are a couple of options.
