Title: Hurricane Dennis
Post by: ScoopKW on July 07, 2005, 02:01:28 pm

Just wanted to let everyone know that I'll likely be AWOL for a few days -- Dennis is going to be a near miss, and that invariably means a long power outage.

We've had alot of hurricanes over the years down in south TX, but I don't ever remember any long power outages from it.

If you lived in Florida, you would have almost certainly experienced one last summer (5 days - Charley.  And that seems to be on the easy side).

I know I'm getting depressed about it.  It seems everytime I check the National Hurricane website, the odds of it hitting the eastern gulf keep improving.  And Jesus, it seems abnormally hot for July.  All the massive hurricanes seem to like August, but this heat can't be good for containing the strength.

I live on an island roughly 150 miles from the nearest power transfer station. When we lose power, it's usually for quite a while. I'm betting on one week -- it really sucks, because there's only SO much I can do on my cabinet without electricity, and all the island's plywood is currently being installed over windows.

One week without work, and no real progress on my cab. Maybe I'll score a generator from a neighbor and at least build the control panel.

On the plus side -- I throw amazing hurricane parties.

The wind is down a bit.

Currently from my position, the barometer is 29.60, wind speed approxmately 50 mph with gusts to 80.

See the tiny white pixel by the arrow in the below picture? That's where I live.

:)

See ya in a couple days, the power is already flickering....

Since hurricanes are usually down to nothing when they get by me, thay dont do much, but I love severe weather. Last year when the remains of a nasty hurricane came around, we headed to the beach. The 50MPH winds and the high waves were great. We have a generator hooked up to our air conditioner just incase, as well as to our refridgerator, water pump, and both water and air heaters. Our power company just isn't reliable
