The NEW Build Your Own Arcade Controls

According to a site I saw (don't remember where) the last 2 buttons for the second player are disabled by default. Is there any way to change this? Some games (like Marvel Super Heroes) need all 6 buttons, as I'm sure you know, and I'd love to kick my brother's butt in this game, without cheating. ;D
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,

First of cheating against your brother is always an acceptable form of competition.
Second, when the roms are done loading hit tab.
then hit input (general) - player 2 controls - go down to button 5 and hit enter then hit I
do the same for 6 but hit k
Esc, esc, esc

ok, cool... do I have to do this for every game? I hope not, since I have a lot of games (since, um, I own every arcade imaginable :P )
Thanks,

No you don't. As long as you use "input (general)"
That's what "general" stands for. The other option is "this game" or something like that.
-
Most importantly, when you do this, DON'T pause the game!
-
I already have my buttons programmed.. but Im just curious...
Why can't you pause the game before setting the buttons?
Does mame freak out or something?

Probably not for I and K.
If you set a key to L Alt with it paused, I think MAME says "L Alt R Alt" It's just much safer to change things without MAME paused.

Well yes... but anyone that has the alt keys mapped to a button should have their mame cab dropped on them :)
ctrl+alt = bad uumk

It's never given me any problems.

You must not play game on your cabinet then..... ctrl + alt + a key = a hotkey.
Trust me on this, if you haven't ran into problems then you are in the extreme minority.
Even if you don't use hotkeys, if you have the driver for a multimedia keyboard installed hotkeys are pre-defined.

I've never had the problem either.

For what? Ctrl + Alt + A is a HotKey to do what in what program?

As NinjaEpisode said, no need for HotKeys or Multimedia keyboards on a MAME cab.

In theory I don't like the Ctrl/Alt keys etc for gaming...but since they are MAME defaults I have always stuck with them and guess what...I've never had any problems either (& yes I do play games occasionally).
Also, I have a multimedia keyboard (only because it is wireless & I got it cheap), and still no problems.
I think 'extreme minority' is an overexaggeration, or the boards would be flooded with related problems all the time as most people use MAME default keys.

I find the problem was always Ctrl, Alt and space
That was the real killer - forever changes focus, brings the desktop backup... Also with other keys in use, Alt+x would quits the current program (EXTREMELY annoying on level 5 of Metal Slug!). Alt+ a lot of keys tends to bring up menus on my machine (no fancy keyboard).
I changed my mame defaults to A,S,D instead of Ctrl,Alt,Space years ago and have never looked back.
But then if it works for you - stick with it.

The man speaks the truth.
Ctrt + Alt + another key will irritate you sometimes.
These keys are not a good choice to set them in your can for playing game.I used them for a while and got a problem,Suddenly my monitor rotated automatically.Because Ctrl + alt + a bunch of keys press together can close windows internal services and some time create (Ctrl + alt + del) key code and that can hurt you alot.So it will be better to reconfigure the defualt mame keys.

The only ones I find from testing on my comp at
work[/]s] (I didn't say that ;) ) are:
alt-tab
alt-enter
ctrl-alt-delete (either delete key)
the "win key"
"win key" is between the ctrlr and alt keys.
delete is not mapped to any mame input
enter is player 3 button 3
tab is the UI menu (admin) button
I bet my home comp is the same. But I know some apps and drivers (video in particular) add hot-key combos, so others may have more problem combos.
Of the four above, I only have had actual, in-game problems with the "win key", which isn't even a ctrl/alt combo. But I don't have a 3 player CP, and only play on the keyboard when I'm playing alone and too lazy to pull out my CP (so I don't have problems with my CP).
OTOH, running into a problem combo just once is bad. IMO, the ctrl/alt is way less a possible problem than Ipac's shift button defaults (unless you have a four player CP), but you might want to cover both of them. [shrug]

Alt-Enter will toggle MAME between windowed and full-screen unless you reassign Toggle Fullscreen on the TAB - Inputs (All Games) - User Interface screen.
For the Windows key, get WinKeyKiller or LogoLess as I mention here: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,38016.msg341431.html#msg341431I
