There is a great utility called GSpot that will identify the audio and video codecs that were used to create an AVI file. Does anyone know if there is a utility that will do the same for MPG files?

Ummm... maybe I'm being stupid, but weren't all MPG files crated with an MPEG codec?

There are a variety of codecs that make that extension and Windows Media Player (or any other player, I guess) won't recognize them until you install the codecs.

Hypothetically, any MPEG codec should be able to play them back. But if they won't play, then they won't play.
Stupid hijacking of standardized extensions.
