Title: RoadBlasters Side Art and Marquee. DONE!
Post by: allroy1975 on June 21, 2005, 03:21:29 am
I'm specifically looking for the big sticker that went on the back of the cockpit cabinet.  I just got an upright and I think that sticker would look AWESOME on the side of an upright cabinet.  Vector if possible...I'm asking an aweful lot.

Thanks

Why not restore the cab and install the System 1 sideart?

I just think the stuff on the back is way cool looking.  I could easily do the system one, I just think it's plain and kinda ugly.  And expensive  ;)

That cabinet is so cool...I never knew that they even made a cockpit version of RoadBlasters, and it's one of my favorite games.  The cheapest route is to buy a used NES cartridge for $3 with the art still on it.  Scan that at like 1200 dpi or higher, enlarge it, and do a little clean-up.  The artwork on the cartridge is nearly identical.

That's a great idea, I looked at a cart on ebay though and it looks like the sides of the words are cut of...I'll have to check out other systems...

I suck at vectorizing....  :(

You're really going to need a cleaner picture to use for vectoring it. Neat artwork. I may give it a go if you can come up with a better original. Feel free to PM me.

Here's a very compressed version of a quick MS Paint mock-up, but StingRay's right...you're sourcefiles are too small.  I could send you a somewhat cleaner version of this and you could try filling in the blanks, but it won't be accurate for sh*t.  I'd buy the Road Blasters NES box and scan it for a decent sourcefile.  Good luck, and I'll keep my eyes peeled for other sources.

I had a little time to kill this evening so I thought I'd see if I could do anything with the pic that you posted. The fine details are just too fuzzy.  Scan that box that you bought and I'll try again with that pic.

I got it today!  even on the box that little space ship doesn't look too clear, but I think it's doable.

what's a good resolution?  I'll scan it as soon as I get home.

WOO HOO!  that was some fast shipping...I'll have to leave posative feedback.

Okay, it's 1.3mb.
http://pac-mat.com/Projects/RoadBlasters/NintendoBox.jpg

What do you think of that?  Vectorizable?

I know some of you guys work real fast, and (to me) this one looks easy in comparison to some stuff people do around here.  I'm hoping it's not too hard.   Let me know if there's anything else I can do.....  :)

Thanks

That one looks about a zillion times better than the other one - I'm pretty sure I'll be able to use it. I'll work on it tonight when I get home, but I have to warn you, my air conditioner is broken and I'm not likely to get a huge amount of work done at home until it's fixed. I'm on vacation all next week so I'll likely knock it out then, unless someone else wants to jump on it before then.

Messed around with it some after work yesterday. The new scan is much, much better than the first picture, but it's still pretty fuzzy in spots. In some area I was just taking my best guess, so I suspect that if you're after 100% accuracy, this isn't going to do it for you. In any case here's a jpeg of what I got done last night:

Edit: looks like the forum software shrank it down and made it look pretty crappy. Here's a direct link to the full sized pic: http://www.stingraysmadness.com/index.php?module=photoalbum&PHPWS_Album_id=19&PHPWS_Photo_op=view&PHPWS_Photo_id=178

holy crap that looks nice!   :o

No, I'm not really looking for 100% accuracy just something that'll look really nice on the side of my cabinet.  Even though it should have the standard System 1 "ATARI" logo, that just doesn't do it for me.  It's a dedicated cab, and I'd like to have dedicated artwork.

and when I say I'm not looking for 100% accuracy I mean like..once the Nintendo logo is removed, if there's a way to just pencil in some other smoke lines, that'd be cool.   I assume that can be done....but I draw stick figures...so...I couldn't do it   ::)

Anyway, I think it looks great so far, and again, thanks!

Yeah, that won't be a problem. The area on the bottom left side of the preview that I posted was partially covered by the "liscenced by Nintendo blah, blah, blah" stuff so I just had to wing it in that spot. I can do the same under the seal. Anyway, glad you like what I did so far.

Illustrator allows you to fill with gradients, although I don't use that feature very often. I'll probably have to fiddle with it a bit to get it to come out the way I want it.

Alright, all I'm missing now is the stuff that that Stingray did.  and a few other very small things.

Would I be considered insane if I tried to find his phone number and call him?  hasn't replied to this thread in over a week.  I'd rather not re-do the stuff he did, but I also don't want to come off as a lunatic.

Has anyone seen Stingray around at all?

Anyway, check it out:

Actually I did intend to work on the Roadblasters art while I was on vacation, but my wife & I sort of impulsively decided to get out of town. This is the first day I've had internet access since the first.  Sorry I didn't get any more done for you, but it looks like you did very well on your own. I think I have that .ai file on the USB memory stick that I have in my pocket. I'll get it to you ASAP.

I played a Roadblasters sitdown a few weeks ago... it's cool, has a fresnel lens in the screen so the screen looks really big, even in the narrow cockpit.
Title: Re: Anyone Feel like Vectorizing some RoadBlasters Art? Need advise from Vector
Post by: Kremmit on July 19, 2005, 12:03:04 am
I've never seen a RB cockpit- didn't know about the fresnel lens.  I always loved the effect the fresnel gave MACH 3 in the cockpit I played it in- especially the way it blurred around the outside edge of the screen if you moved your head the wrong way.  Somehow made it seem more real, though I don't know why that should be.

Allroy- would be dope if you did the marquee.  The library needs a full art package for this game. (and I need the marquee!)

Here's what I've got.  I'd apprecaite comments as this is just about done.  Almost how I'm going to send it off to the printers.

From what I can tell from the low quality images that appear in these forums, it looks great. I'd be happy with it, if I were you.

Okay, touched up a few things..faked a few things (like all those tiny dots.  I just couldn't do it..so I made the desired effect with Radial white to black fade) and I think I'm happy with it.

I'm sending it to the printers today.

Hopefully I'll have the artwork installed by the end of the week and can have posted pics.  :)

Thanks Stingray!

When I looked closely at the condition of my marquee, it was obvious that this needed to be done.  It's been scanned, stiched and the vectorization has begun.

well holy crap.  I don't like to brag but I think the marquee is beautiful.  as for you guys who gave advise on how to make all those little dots, I really apprecaite the advice and still have way more respect for you than I do for the average joe, but I went in a different direction.  I went ahead with fades and accomplished virtually the same thing.  Granted up close they look different, I think mine looks BETTER than the original.  :)

Maybe not on the side art, although I think it looks good, this marquee is AMAZING.  :)

However, I do have a few color questions.  My marquee is a POS.  it's got colors faded and burned, and I can't tell a few things.  the top of the marquee (pinched between the wood of the cab and the metal of the marquee retainer) is clearly a different shade of blue than the rest of the sky.  So I went with that blue for the whole sky.  now..in the middle there's an exlopsion (like on the side art) and it's got lines coming out of it (like on the side art) but I can't tell if the stuff that LOOKS like it SHOULD be white actually fades to yellow closer to the explosion.  If anyone has some idea and can confirm that this should or should NOT have fades in it.  As it is, everything is pristine white.  I think it looks DAMN good.  :)

So..without further ado...
