Title: Which D9200 model to buy?
Post by: Joystick Jerk on May 18, 2005, 08:16:01 pm
I was looking at the WG website for the D9200 model, and it looks like there are two 27" models that could work for me, but I'm hoping one of the techies here can enlighten me as to which model would be the better choice.

The site lists two standard models:

27 Inch D9200 Digital Monitor - Universal (15/25/31 KHZ) (http://www.wellsgardner.com/wellsgardner31/finditem.cfm?itemid=691)
27" D9200 (31KHZ / 38KHZ) 19C  (http://www.wellsgardner.com/wellsgardner31/finditem.cfm?itemid=1600)

They seem like they're pretty much the same except for two items. The first lists "Universal" in it's descriptor, which I assume means it uses the universal mount. If that is the case, does the second model also use a universal mount as well even though it doesn't list it?

Second, the second model can do all the same frequencies as the first model, but in addition adds the ability to do 38khz. Obviously the extra frequency would be a benefit, but it also says that if you want to run in 15 or 25 khz, you have to adjust the monitor manually to do that. I'm don't have much wiring or electrical knowledge, so is this "manual adjustment" easy to do like flipping a switch or setting a jumper, or does it require soldering or something just as tricky? And once this adjustment is made, will the monitor have access to all 4 frequencies, or does it only run at 15/25 khz on one setting and 31/38 khz on another?

And I had two questions about the D9200 overall. Since the D9200 doesn't need an isolation transformer, does it just have a standard AC plug already wired into it?  And as far as PC connectivity goes, does it also have a standard monitor cable already wired into it, or does that have to be purchased/installed afterwords?

I believe the adjustment is simply adjusting the horizontal frequency pot.  I get the feeling there is actually no difference in the monitors, they just turn up that pot at the factory so it will sync at 38Khz.  Once you adjust it for 15/25/31 it will no longer be able to sync at 38 until you adjust it back.  I recommend getting the 15/25/31 so you will be able to run games at their native resolution.  They are both universal mount frames.  It plugs right into a regular outlet.  It comes with a cable that will plug directly into your pc.

These are digital monitors, no adjusting the pot.

The 31/38 Monitor is for Golden Tee games, and doesn't sync between low/mid/high screen modes.

The standard one is what you want. I've been running mine at 800x600 since I got it when working on the desktop and for all vertical games and vectors with no problems.
(about a year now)

I did mount 2 computer case fans the the back of the monitor blowing across the neckboard. This was a mod suggested by a few ops over on the startech forum, that seems to help decrease the failure rate of these beasts.

(The neck board get VERY HOT!)

Well, yes, it is a digital monitor...the user interface is an OSD with digital controls for things that the user would normally adjust.  However there are pots on the board: Focus, Raster Rotation, etc..  Take a look.  Granted I don't see one specifically for Horizontal frequency adjustment but that doesn't mean there isn't one, especially on the 31/38khz model.

Great info guys. Sounds like the standard D9200 model is the way to go for Mame gaming.

Thanks!
