Post by: HaRuMaN on May 11, 2005, 06:22:02 am
This semester is OVER!!!  Finally...  took my last final last night, now I'm done for the summer.  No more Dynamics, Diff EQ, Deforms, Aircraft Performance, AOE Materials, or Industrial Processes Lab...

YAY!!!

Let's see... the only real fun I had this semester was in the manufacturing processes lab.

Here's one thing I got to make in there.  A mounting plate, I think its called.  The base plate was cut manually, using a horizontal and vertical mill, and a hydraulic punch.  The vertical plate on the right (with the X and the arc) was cut using a CNC program I wrote, and the plate on the left was cut using CAM software.  It has a pocket on the other side you can't see.  What I'm really proud of is the weld I did.  It was my first time welding ever!  I did the weld on the right side by hand, and the weld on the left side by robot.

I know everyone here likes the BYOAC tokens...  well here's a coin I made in the lab.  Filled a mold with ultra-fine brass powder, compressed it on a hydraulic press, and then sintered it in an oven at around 800 degrees F, and then polished it.

We made an ashtray, too, using aluminum blanks and a press.  Our instructor informed us it was a "cointray", not an ashtray...  guess they can't be seen as promoting smoking, lol.

Also made a pulley.  This was neat, as we did everything from start to finish.  Made a sand mold to cast the blanks, and then turned it on a lathe.  Broached a keyway through the center hole, also drilled and tapped a hole for a set screw.  I had fun with this one until I broke the carbide cutting tool on the lathe...   :-X

How did u manage to break the turning tool? I assume you just broke the insert? What happened? Just interested as im a CNC turner.

Well, this wasn't a CNC lathe, it was manual, with power feed, etc...  I had the pulley butted up against the chuck, and was turning the outside diameter with a slow feed rate (finishing pass) and I let the tool go just a hair too far, and it hit the chuck, and the chuck broke the carbide tip right off...   :-[  I was so embarrassed, lol.  Luckily, the instructors were cool about it, and just gave me another tip.   :D

Easily done mate, ive had more than my fair share of mishaps!

If youve got a cab you should make yourself some stainless or ally joys!

This was part of my reasoning in taking this lab.  It's not required for my major, but now that I've taken it, I can take a skill test at the school and get access to the machine shop there whenever I need it.   :D  As long as I supply my own material, I can do whatever I like...  hehe.
