Well, since my computer died (PIII 500) I started getting a new computer.
Abit KV-80 motherboard
Athlon 64 3200+
512megs of memory
40gig & 200gig hd
DVD+/-RW DL
Diamond Stealth ATI 9550
I'm debating what the first thing I should try out on it should be. I'd like to see how fast mame compiles. I'd like to try out the video card, it came with Deus Ex something or other. otherwise I have old school games like Quake 1-3, Decent 3, Black and White, UT2k.
Unfortunately I am on modem so I can't try multiplayer games :( And I don't know if I have all the files needed to compile mame.
If I play mame what game should I try? I have .82 roms, so no new chds to try out. No way I am going to try and dowload that on modem!
Or do I do work and get my controls.dat development up and going again (blah, I'd rather play as a first task :) )
Everyone keeps complaining everything isn't as fun anymore so I am making a fun post :)

My vote is for the compile.
I love seeing how much fater my compiles go on a new smokin' machine...
-
Actually, the first thing I do is verify the internet connection works by going to Danni.com, then I come here, then I would play MAME tm.
-
WEll duh, of course I mean after I install the system.
-
Received all the remaining parts yesterday.

Is Windows XP64 available yet? I'd like to see how it compares to regular XP with a 64-bit processor.
-
Not sure. I *might* have a copy of a 2001 release of whistler 64. Though I probably gave that back to IBM and that was extremely buggy.
maybe i will try a linux64 beta

Well, I'll let you guys know what I did first, after normal installation.
I wanted to try out the proc. However I thought I had everything to compile mame. Nope. Since I couldn't do that I decided I'd try out the video card. The first thing I ran is not on the pol :) I ran quake3 with everything on. Man, that is beautiful. You realize with my old PIII and ati 128 I had to turn most everything off, including modelling the weapons in the playfield.
Then I ran Stepmania to try the TV out with my dancepads. Neat! WIll have to get the right cables to hook up my computer to my home theater.
I found something to stress the proc (I've been doing temp readings lately). I am using Dancing Monkeys. It's a program that generates steps for stepmania by analyzing the song. Very CPU intensive. Pretty cool stuff. What use to take my 15-20 minutes now takes a couple of minutes :)
My next goal is to make the system run dead silent during idle. Through researching looks like I will be purchasing a Silenx 80mm thesistor case fan, Silenx PSU, Silenx GPU Cooler, Silenx HDD Cooler, possibly Silenx CPU Cooler if it fits my mobo, and a Zalman northbridge heatsink. Along with Artic Silver heatsink compound of course.
The goal is to get the system as cool as possible during idle so the psu and case fan run as low rpm as possible. If the 120mm Silenx cpu cooler can fit my mobo that will be pretty quiet since it uses a 120mm fan.

Send me spam! muhahaha!

compiling mame
Old system, definately over an hour, last version I compiled was like .81
new system, with .95 takes about 15 minutes
-
So, whatcha gonna do with the other system?
-
Usually my first task on a new computer is to wipe the idiot default system from the hard drive and install it myself so I can set it up the way I want it.
-
paige, considering this is a barebones system and I put in drives I already had....
Daniel, took the drives out of it for the new system, took useful stuff out, threw away case and mobo.
-
I also tried vivo nonno. Wow, ridge racer at full speed....
