When does it start and how much is an out of state license?  What is the weapon of choice?  Bow, pistol, shotgun, M-16?

Heh heh, Ya, I'd like to get in on the action too! Up here, you have to get a 'cat license' for your pet. Not too many roaming the streets around here...

For cat hunting you need stamps much like you do for hunting ducks.
heres the pricing scheme.

# of stamps            in state        out of state
        1                           $4                 $6
        6                           $20               $33
        15                         $45               $70

but you need to purchase a regular hunting liscence as well

Being the owner of two cats currently, and at one time the owner of NINE-FRIGGEN-TEEN cats, this may sound wierd, but I was down for passing this law.  Feral cats are WICKED :o and if you won't keep your cats inside, or be bothered to put a collar on them....guess that's the price you pay for being a pet owner who can be outsmarted by 'em.

BTW, tommy, your pit bull CAN catch 'em, he just hasn't had enough practice.  My dog helped kill off a few of the feral cats that tried to get freaky with any of the herd I had....and never hurt a one of the rest.

My mom's neighbor has a cat that digs up and craps in the nice landscaping I've done on her house.  That one would be my first stamp, and I might even get that one mounted.....stick it in the bushes, just to any others that might think it's ok what to expect!

Take care of your pets in every way possible to keep them safe from harm.  And be vewy vewy quiet....I'm hunting puddy tats!

Are you like one of those hoarders or something? ;)  Good God, man!

I'm a cat fancier myself (can't stand the co-dependence of dogs)...but I agree *gasp* w/ Drew on this one.

I lived in a town that was overrun by cats, it sucks. I'm not sure I'm really for the "hunting" aspect, 'cuz who really wants a bunch of wacko cat-hunters running around town? How sporting can it be?

Anyhow, I definitely support the organized round-up of strays, followed by a humane euthanasia program. Hell, I'd even support that program for humans...I know a bunch that need to be put out of their misery. ;)

In the book I'm currently reading a character said something great about cats.  This won't be an exact quote but it was something like, "Curiosity killed the cat.  But in its short life it learned 100 times more about the world than any dog."

I tend to agree.

Bah...cats are nearly as, or every bit as smart as dogs.  The measure of a person's intelligence is not his willingness to blindly obey the orders of his self-styled master.  In fact, one could make a pretty persuasive argument on the contrary.

Either way, it's irrelevant.  How about this:

Dogs are stupid...  Face it...  Foreign exchange students are smart  (at least some of 'em...)

Why get a german shepherd when you could have a german?  Afterall, he probably won't piss on your carpet or bark his head off every time somebody walks by on the sidewalk or constantly stick his face in your guest's crotch (without invitation) in a desperate bid to satisfy his insatiable (read: pathetic ) need for affection.

Hey Cooter, guess what I heard today?  There's already a place close by where you can legally hunt feral cats!  It's called Minnesota!  You guys are the reason we're overrun!  They're heading over the border to escape all you crazed Canadian-wannabe's!

Are you like one of those hoarders or something? ;)  Good God, man!

Nah, I lived on a farm, and anyone whose cat had kittens always asked if I'd take 'em.  Never had a mouse...EVER!  It'd be comical, I had two labs, and the cats always were traipsing around 'em....the dogs were very protective of all of 'em for some reason.

Well, at least your cats represent you well....they look exactly as I'd have pictured liberal cats ;D

Its called training.... try to make your cat do something you ask(never happen).

I've had cats that I taught to crap in the toilet, come when called, and speak.  I've also had dogs that I trained.  You're simply being obtuse when you say it'll never happen, and you're allowing your bias to color your view.  Take it from someone who likes cats AND dogs, if you want to train your cat, OR your dog, if you're willing to put the time in, it'll happen.  Period.

Your probably right Drew i am being bias, but you cant tell me any cat can be trained to do what a dog can, if for no other reason the cats just not interested. Now does him not being interested mean less intelligent , probably not but still hes not smart enough to know its time to listen up.

Just looking into a dogs eyes while speaking to it, obviously tells me hes thinking more then a cat. He waits on me to react and sees my mood and understands the meaning of words and reacts as such. Its a night and day comparison.

Let's suppose for a moment that they were able to prove that a cat was smarter than a dog, or a dog was more intelligent than a cat.
Title: Re: Drew - When does Kitty Season start?
Post by: shmokes on April 14, 2005, 08:41:40 am
That's what I'm talking about.  Even if someone could come in today and show conclusively that dogs ARE, in fact, smarter than cats it's not like I'd suddenly think, "Oh....I guess I wish I had a dog."  It's not like you can train your pit bull to do your algebra.

Look at Al Gore.  That guy is smart.  It doesn't make him likeable.

Better yet, look at shmokes or me - we're likeable, but that doesn't make shmokes smart ;)

Tommy, enjoy your dog.  Some things in life, like whether a dog is smarter than a cat, fish, or a stump aren't worthy of debate.  Clearly the stump will win every time you pit it against an animal ;D

Zakk, I've had catfish before....how'd your genius fish allow themselves to be mounted by a cat?  Oh, and that brings up another idea.  Take your tank and put it in that dopey area of your fireplace that needs balancing out with the rest of the gimongous hearth.  Or don't.  Just sit there and stare at the empty hole.  And twitch. ;D

I brush my cat 98 times to the right, and 34 to the left.  That's not crazy, that's just the right thing to do! ;)

No, the only hard part is when you are shuffling into the can late at night to drop a duece yourself and you flip on the light.....not crapping your pants from being startled is the hardest part ;)

I only did it with one cat, my first, because I didn't want to hassle with changing the litterbox, but after almost sending a fat heater through my drawers due to the shock I described above, I decided until I could find a way to teach 'em to flush too, it'd never happen again.

Just looking into a dogs eyes while speaking to it, obviously tells me hes thinking more then a cat. He waits on me to react and sees my mood and understands the meaning of words and reacts as such. Its a night and day comparison.

My family used to breed and train hunting dogs in Nova Scotia.  We are actually credited with creating a style and breed of trained hunting dog that is renowned throughout Canada (among duck hunters).  I know a LOT about this.

That dog isn't thinking.  It's searching for a sign, any sign, of a way to please you.  That's if it loves you.  It might also be looking for a sign of a way to get food from you.  I've trained hundreds of dogs and the older members of may family have trained thousands.  Dogs don't think in chains the way a cat does.  They react to stimuli, at first based on a reward system and then simply out of rote behaviour to please the master.  It actually doesn't matter the master is a man, woman, or pickup truck.  They are a pack animal and pack animals work to please the pack leader.

A cat, on the other hand, can think in chains.  Put a bird in a cage hanging from the ceiling... a cat will jump to a chair, then the table, then a book case, and evaluate other places from which it may be able to get that bird.  A dog will just stare at it and drool.

Border collies aren't representative of dogs in general because they are about ten times smarter than the average dog.

They even approach the awesome intelligence of cats sometimes.

I'm interetested in the sociology here.  I'm surprised to find myself in a majorly male dominated hobby website, yet seeming to be in a majority coming down on the cat's side in the cat/dog debate.  Generally speaking, it seems like guys like dogs more.  They're a more "manly" pet to own.  But here that doesn't seem to be the case and, in fact, Tommy's pretty much had no support.

Is this a geek thing?  I know a disproportionate number of us are computer guys, which probably means there are a lot of geeks here.  Do geeks prefer cats?

Seriously, doesn't the proportion of cat-to-dog supporters in this thread seem unusually high for a discussion involving nearly all, if not all males?

I mean, not only ChadTower, but Dartful Dodger are on the same side as me in this thread.

I think I'm more in the minority....

wife and I are hamster fanatics.... don't really know why.  Easy enough to clean, feed and occasionally pet and play with..... and vet bills are pretty non existant, since most, if properly taken care of, will live 2 - 4 years....

The main fear is probably that people will kill any cat they see and can get away with, not just the uncollared cats.  People don't have much of a history of following rules once you give them the right to kill.

I don't know as if dogs are so much a 'manly' pet, well except to those who are making up any number of insecurities (oooh look at my BIG dog!  No, don't look there, I said look at the dog dammit!)

I think that it's just whatever you grew up with.  If you had cats you will probably have cats.  If you grew up with dogs, you get dogs.  If you grew up with hamsters, you got beat up!  (sorry couldn't resist!)  ;D

I would say I'm a dog person, but not having the space or time requirements for a dog right now, I'm unwilling to get a dog and not meet its needs.  I think it's a very irresponsible owner who gets themselves a dog that will require certain things, then can't figure out why when they get home and haven't met the needs of the dog, they find their stuff chewed up and the dog starts to crap in their shoes to let them know they want some interaction.

Cats are easier to deal with.

My cats will love the dog I get.  Not at first, but after they realize the dog won't be leaving the house anytime soon, they'll adapt.  Animals are funny like that.
