Post by: JCKnife on April 05, 2005, 11:36:00 am
Not sure if this belongs here or in consoles but Project 64 has a new version, 1.6 released recently.

I've been playing around with 1.6 for about half an hour.  It looks like there's some pretty nice improvements, especially in the areas of speed and compatibility.  Waverace 64 is now pretty much perfect (as far as I can tell).  Let's see what plugins come in the next few months to improve things even more.

p.s. I'm with JCKnife, where's the link?   :)

I just posted them on my web site at http://home.comcast.net/~cpviewer . It's up to you to find them, I can't do all the work for ya.

Enjoy,
John

PS...Not much testing was done. Email me directly if you have problems. I'll get right on them. Remember to edit the cfg file.

Okay I'm still having a (different) problem...when I start from mamewah, p64 does not recognize any controller (keyboard) inputs. This is true whether I use my cp or the actual keyboard. I can't find any way to get to a config menu in p64 when I launch from mamewah. What am I missing?

Same here.  When I start Project 64 by itself, everything is fine.  When I start it through MAMEwah without the wrapper, it's fine also, but I can't exit.  When I start it through MAMEwah with the wrapper, I cannot use any keyboard input, but I can escape.  Any Ideas?

Well, I've seen this before. It's a focus issue. Even though the app (P64) is on top, it doesn't have focus. Try messing with the {dosbox} and or {safelaunch} parameters. It's probably the {nosafelaunch}. Try changing it to {safelaunch}.

I haven't had any of the controller or focus issues, although I sometimes see the Project 64 window in Mamewah as it loads a game.  As for the controller issue, did you set up your controllers before loading it with Mamewah?  And did you install 1.6 in a new folder or in the same folder as the older version?

  Hey John,  why don't you make your wrapper start up P64 minimized (or hidden, if you can) then maximize it after a timeout (configurable), say 1500ms?

  I wonder if that would solve anything.  Plus, it would make it more attractive for people to use.

This looks interesting. before I try to set this up, can anyone tell me if I have enough buttons on my cab to make running project64 worthwhile... Its a 2 player control panel with 6 buttons per player
Title: Re: Project 64 version 1.6 is out
Post by: JCKnife on April 06, 2005, 01:17:38 pm
With six buttons per player, something's gotta give. N64 controller had 10 buttons, analog stick, and a d-pad. So if you map your stick to the analog, and your start button to start, that still leaves 9 buttons and 4 d-pad directions but only 6 action buttons.

Several games you can play fine, but for example tetrisphere (a favorite) uses the d-pad which I didn't map to anythiing.

Mario Kart, Wave Race, etc. are fine.

However, don't forget that if you have access to a USB port you can use either an original gamepad with an adapter or a Logitech Pad as a windows device. I added a USB port right on the front of my CP about a month ago.

Thanks for the info guys. I think i'll leave this off my cab for now. I could plug a joypad into it, but I already have project 64 on my xbox so I think i'll keep on there for now

Thats just crazy talk.  You need it on your cab too, here is why.  Lets say the wife is half drunk and listening to her music on the xbox upstairs.  7 year old has friends over and they are playing Barbie Horse Adventure on the Living room xbox.  You are in the basement, the stars have aligned, xlink kai is working and your buddy in St Louis wants to play Co-Op Doom3 with you on the basement xbox, where is your 3 year old boy gonna play Mario Kart 64?  What, the bedroom xbox. heck no, the damn dog is asleep in there and he isnt old enough to play on the one in the car by himself.  Thats why you need it working on your cab, too.

oh man, that was the funniest thing i've read in ages! Ok i'm convinced to give it a whirl. Me & my GF are always fighting over the TV anyway. What shall I map to each button/stick to get maximum compatabilty?

I changed {nosafelaunch} to {safelaunch} and it worked like a charm!  Thanks for the advice.

On my cab I mapped Player 1 Analog Stick like this:
A=L Cntl
B=L Alt
S(tart)=Space
Thats the bottom row of a standard fighter layout starting on the right and going left.

Z=L Shift
R(ight)=X
L(eft)=Z
That would be the top row of a standard fighter starting on the right and going left.

I also mapped the C buttons to the Player 2 joystick so I could play Robotron64.  I have no idea if this is standard or not, hell I was just trying to get it setup so Mario Kart worked.

I used the same logic while setting up the analog stick for Player 2

In my limited experience with MameWAH that setting, {safelaunch}/{nosafelaunch} seems to vary from system to system. I can't add any more than that other than a friend of mine and I work on the setting up of our cabinets together and what works on one cabinet doesn't ALWAYS work on the other even though the OS and SP level is the same AND the speed of the components, mobo and CPU are almost identical. It's something to do with focus. MinWAH and I have talked about it and don't really have an explanation.

Later,
John
Title: Button Warning!!!

In an earlier post I mentioned that I had mapped the C buttons to the player 2 joystick, found out last night when I actually played a 2 player game of Crusin Exotica and Rush 2049 that odd things happen when this is used.  Specifically your view changes (Player 1) and a few other odd ball things.  The setup is fine for Robotron 64 but as a default setup, if you will be playing 2 player games, its a bust!!

Yeah I ignored that part as I like a 2 player setup. Apart from that most games seem to work fine with those settings. thanks

I installed Project 64 with the wrapper last night and ran into a few problems.  When I select a game, the screen just turns black.  If I alt+tab, I can get to project 64, but the game is not maximized.

I changed the settings so that it should start maximized everytime, but the setting doesn't seem to stick.  I was wondering if this is because of a focus issue (I've never had a focus issue, so I'm not really sure what the symptoms are), or is it a problem with the wrapper not saving the settings or could this be a bug in the new version of project 64?  I used to have project 64 1.5 (downloaded modified version from screenshotarchive) on my old computer and didn't not have this problem, but I want to try 1.6 for the new speed improvements.

That is the default behavior of the emulator. You need to use a commandline wrapper to get it to exit with the Escape key.
