Title: What's the best steering wheel available for the Playstation 2?
Post by: Grasshopper on February 20, 2005, 10:16:27 am
I should point out that I don't actually own a Playstation but I want a steering wheel that I can use with both my PC and my Dreamcast.

AFAIK the only way I can do this without buying two wheels is to buy a Playstation wheel and use converters (which incidentally I already have).

If there are wheels available that can be used on the Playstation and the Xbox then this would be a bonus as I might buy an Xbox at some point in the future.

Thanks in advance.

I have no idea about how well it would work with converters/other systems, but Logitech's new Driving Force Pro looks like the best damn wheel I've ever seen heh.  It's got 900 degree rotation, all rubber wheel, force feedback.  It also switches to less rotations for games that cannot use 900.

It IS pricey though... 105 on amazon.... 150 retail I believe.  I have had the Driving Force (model before the pro) for a while now and like it a lot.  I'd love to get the new Pro when GT4 comes out tho :)  I'm thinking of selling my current wheel to get the Pro actually.

Anyway... check those two out, and if you have any questions about the Driving Force (I haven't personally used the pro yet), let me know.

The Logitech Driving Force Pro is the best driving wheel ever made for a console, and maybe for the PC as well. It's the official wheel of Gran Turismo 4, and is currently available in a store near you. I've used mine on pretty much every PS2 racer and on MAME, and it works like a champ!

Thanks for the replies. It's certainly a bit pricey but I'd rather save up and pay more for a quality item.

I've just been reading a review and they say it's USB and also works on a PC.

I'm a bit confused by this. Bear in mind that I don't own a Playstation. Can someone confirm whether it is USB only or whether it will also connect to a standard Playstation gameport. I need the latter facility for my DC converter to work.

Thanks

Well I can't say for sure, but I'll tell you what I know:

My driving force is USB only.  You plug the wheel into a power outlet for power (obviously), plug the pedals into the wheel assembly, and plug the USB port to the front USB port of the Playstation 2.  You can also pop the USB plug into a PC and run it as a PC wheel.  I'm going to say there's an excellent chance that this is the same setup for the Pro.

If you just NEED the playstation plug, they do make them.  I have a slightly older MadCatz wheel that uses the regular PSX plug, and no power plug.  You could probably scout one at a local gamestop or ebay.  Or in my thread in B/S/T since I'm selling my old one ;)  Ok, sorry for that shameless plug, but hope that helps.

Fry's electronics Outpost.com has Gran Turismo 4 with the logitech GT wheel for $129.99 after $20 rebate. Pre-order of course.

Thanks for the replies. It's a shame the Driving Force Pro is USB only. I think my only safe course of action is to buy a wheel that is advertised as being compatible with the Playstation 1.
