how is the reliability overall of gamecubes? i have always bought new, but if it likely wont wear out, used could be cool.

anyone used it?

I bought a used GameCube and its been working fine for the past 6 months or so.  Flip it over and make sure you get one with "DOL-001" as the model number as this is compatible with the new modchips coming out (according to Mr. Curmudgeon).

I have freeloader, and it worked great until I tried to save a game in Mr. Driller Land.  Apparently, there are some import games that don't support FreeLoader hacked save game formats.

Apparently every US GameCube can be easily modded to support Japanese bios by hacking a small switch to the motherboard.
I plan to do this as soon as I buy the gamebit screw to open the damn thing up.

I've had a refurbished  gamecube for two and a half years now without a single glitch.  Also with mine, it came with the same warranty as a new cube does.  Didn't see on this page if it's diffrent, but I assume not.

As for the freeloader, never used it.

alright, ive decided i will go buy a new platinum gc this week. i know a guy at shopko so i can get all of my purchase 10%off.

i am also getting a 1019 mem card. i want to pick up a cool game as well, for cheap. they might have super mario sunshine and billy hatcher. any opinions on those?

i like platformer/adventure kinda games, and i have a 5 year old daughter who likes to play too, but is not very good.

i have a ps2 so i only want gcn exclusives. thanks all.

if i got a game boy player and did the region switch mod, can i then play japanese gba carts? that would sure be cool.

btw, found a metroid prime bundle w/ bonus disc. wouldnt have been my choise tho, if any one wants to trade metroid discs for the mario cart, let me know, and i can send the metroid box system box sleeve.

thanks,

Keep in mind that the GBA is region free and can play Japanese carts out of the box. And the GBA player is pretty much GBA hardware with a disk to boot the GCN to use the player. I have Super Mario Advance in Japanese (imported my gba and this game before the gba came out in the states... couldn't wait the 2 months). I tested it about five minutes ago for you to make sure I wasn't giving false info. Worked flawlessly in the GBA player for the GCN. I don't have any type of mod on my Cube.

So in short: If you get GCN + GBA player, import away on GBA games without modding. However, if you want to use Japanese GCN games, then get the mod.

Are there any many good arcade ports on the GCN?  If so, are there any exclusively on GCN?  I can think of Super Monkey Ball, Capcom vs SNK, F-Zero GX & Soul Calibur 2.

I've had a GameCube for ages but I hardly use it...in fact I'm thinking of selling it...Hmmm, maybe Soul Calibur 2 is reason enough to keep it and stick it in my cab...

F-Zero GX is a fun racing game, would be cool in a cab I think

Did you know there is a F-Zero AX arcade version of that game?  Its a cool cab where the seat swings from left to right, and it also comes with GameCube memory slot so you can unlock stuff from the GX version (and vice versa).

i read on some forum all you have to do it melt the end of a bik pen and squish it on the head of the screw. so i tried it. i used a clear body bik pen and pulled the ink cartridge out and got it real hot with a lighter. i then squished it on one of the screws and let it sit. it unscrewed fine. it even unscrewed the others like i made my own bit. i have taken the screws in and out twice with the pen. no probs. i can get a pick if ya like, but its not hard to visualize.  ;D

Ikaruga (a superb vertical scrolling shooter) begs to be put in a cab.  It even has a setting in the options menu for vertical monitors.  I steal a powerpoint projector from work periodically so I can project it vertically on my wall for parties.  It's rad.

Hey Orntar.... I don't have a GC, but I do have at least two consumer electronic devices that I wanna open up but they have custom screws to prevent tampering. That trick sounds like it might work. You think it will work for screws that have a funny inside shape rather than a custom outside shape? I have one device that has screws that look like a phillips only the shape is a star instead of a plus. And I have another that has a triangle shape.

I waz gonna use a drill!

hey, p. nice to talk again. i havent been here in a while.

as for the melted pen trick, its worth a try (since its cheap), but im not sure if the pen plastic is strong enough to power through it. i know the tringle screws you are talking about, i think they are on the gc controllers. darn nintendo, sega consoles and pads never had that crap.

and for the other, i think the one you arte talking about is "torx" those are easy to come by at a hardware store. should be cheap too, unless your in europe (which i know your not  ;D)

I just checked it again and they actually look more triangular but each point has an additional funny shape too. Dunno why I recall them being star shaped. Back to the drill I guess!

I just did a quick google search and found this.  http://www.lara.com/cgi-bin/store/commerce.cgi?oc=BT-3R
Could that be what you are looking for?  If not, you could always see if you can find something by doing a search  and I used "triangle screw head" as the term.
It may help anyway.

I got my Gamecube shortly after it first came out with a Rogue Squadron 2 bundle. Like every Nintendo product (except the NES) I own, it runs flawlessly. (The NES came broken... ahh the hours trying to get the cartridges to work... those were the good-ol' days.) Hell, my N64 had Coca-cola spilled on it by my younger brother back when it was brand new, and it still works flawlessly, except for a very sticky reset button I'm too lazy to clean/fix. I think, out of all the systems, though they're viewed as 'childish and behind the times', Nintendo's systems are the most resilliant.
