Title: maybe its just me but these animated avatars are killing my performance

many of you guys have the animated avatars, which are making my board browsing very choppy.

any idea why?

They are way too big in terms of filesize. To people with high-speed broadband it doesn't affect us much, but if you're on dial-up, it causes problems, especially if the thread has alot of photos in it.

Oh and the other problem is if you use IE, IE waits until a Table's contents are completely loaded before displaying it. Netscape displays table contents as it loads.

I'm on dial-up and most everything else loads up before the avitars so no problems here...

I'm on dial-up and even with all the av's, it runs just fine.  I use Firefox, and I have a rather large web cache, so perhaps that has a few things to do with it.  Tell GG to use the new one he got from me  :o

Could be your settings aren't caching them...

Drew's Penguin avatar for example is excessive. 350kb for one avatar. GGkoul's avatar is 130kb.

Just for comparison, the average animated banner ad (468x60) is anywhere between 15kb and 40kb.

And for further comparison, my Speedy animation is 5kb while the skeleton warrior is 8kb.  ;D

You could try Proxomitron and just freeze animated gifs all together. ;)

Lately that might have been because the stripper girl was 5.1M.  I've decided to go back to stock Superman for now.

They don't slow me doen at all at work, where I do most of my web browsing. However at home out in the boonies there's no internet but dialup. Some of the threads here just choke my connection if I try to view them from home.
